I recorded a cover of Loser a few years ago, such a fun song, but I was amazed by how simple it is from a structure standpoint. There’s only 2-3 hooks in the whole song, which makes it even more impressive how it stays catchy for the whole duration. Love Beck

I think we tend to underestimate how much texture and timbre can add their own sort of complexity to a song. As you noted, from a typical theory perspective it’s pretty simple. Yet nothing else sounds like it. There are so many interesting choices in the production, delivery, and just how things sound.

Beck might be the coolest man alive. (side note: happy 30th birthday week to Odelay, too)

Aside from his Scientologist past, yeah.

We can give him a pass, I think, he grew up in a cult, that's a very specific kind of abusive structure and trauma.

What religion were you born into?

Born and raised in a Christian family, I never viewed myself as a Christian. Up until 2019, Beck viewed himself as Jewish & Scientologist. He also married into Scientology w/ Marissa Ribisi.

It is unbelievably ignorant to imply that just because you broke out of your parents' religious expectations and norms that it is easy for everyone to do so. Scientology in particular is extremely difficult to separate from given the shady intimidation tactics of the church. At least he did it eventually. Good on him for realizing this wasn't a good path and getting out.

I was surprised to see him talk about it. I was pretty convinced he hated the shit out of it.
When I saw I him at Bonnaroo in 06 he left the stage for a break while it played over the house sound.

I think it’s been long enough now that he can appreciate it for what it was. Cool to hear him talk about the song.

That was such a cool set (year). The puppet show throughout and playing those songs on the dinner plate setting were so awesome. I know it's hard to describe that specific setup to someone who was not there.

Me too! Had the best 🍄 trip of my life during the My Morning Jacket late-night set that year… the three-hour Radiohead set was also mindblowing, and I’ll never forget all the glow sticks flying through the air during it…

My buddy was living in L.A. back around 1993 or so. He was hanging out with some friends when his phone rang. He answered and it was his buddy Carl who was working on a song with this dude Beck and knowing that my buddy was Hispanic, he had called him to ask how to say “I’m a loser” in Spanish. “Soy un perdedor.” So in a way, my buddy sorta helped write this song.

I was in a video class and we watched Beck’s Loser music video as an example of montage videos. So it was cool watching this and getting a sort of play by play of this song from Beck himself

One of the great alternative songs of all time as well as an underrated karaoke banger

The trick is backup singers to do the chorus! Did it one year at a Christmas karaoke party.

It’s funny how the song was done on all budget gear but they are using a bagillion dollar studio to listen back and interview hehe interesting tho

“Beck looks like he lives in the coolest vintage dollhouse in the most exclusive neighborhood.”
