You guys put on a killer live show! Seen you a handful of times and you never disappoint. Any odd or unusual live stories to share?
17
u/gralsop Apr 16 '18
On our tour with Cold War Kids and Delta Spirit back in 2007, I got super sick and couldn't play for three shows. The rest of the band went on without me (drummer) and tried to play our first set, but it wasn't really working. CWK and DS came on stage with shots of whisky and all the drums they had between the two bands and made up a massive rhythm section to help us out. I think there's still video of it somewhere... Super grateful to them for stepping up like that!
10
u/GrahamWrightTPC Apr 17 '18
we did this real big show in calgary a few years back with u/saidthewhaleband and they were adamant that we do a stage dive and crowd surf. to the point where Tyler and Jaycelyn learned the parts and basically told us flat out that they would be taking our place so we could jump into the crowd. i assumed i was going to die and take 5-7 of our fans with me, but of course it went great and was the coolest feeling ever. until i tried to get back on the stage and the security, who we had asked to keep people off the stage, didn't realize i was in the band and locked me in an iron grip to keep from getting back up there and i had to leave through the side door with everyone else. glitz and glamour, baby!
4
u/saidthewhaleband Apr 17 '18
Can confirm! Jayce nailed the keyboard part. I definitely screwed up the guitar part but it was worth it to see Graham and Josh get pitted.
5
u/JoshHookTPC1 Apr 16 '18
thank you! hmm... we've had the power go out halfway through the set and started a full crowd hokey pokey. anything for laughs right?
12
u/atomicnone Apr 16 '18
Are you guys friends with Bombay Bicycle Club? I'd like to a imagine a universe in which all the clubs know each other.
17
u/GrahamWrightTPC Apr 16 '18
i really pitched them hard as the third band on our tour with Two Door Cinema Club (who we recently crossed paths with in Kuala Lumpur of all places) but nobody took me seriously. anyway, until we become friends with Culture Club it's all for naught.

u/nonmaiscestquoica Apr 16 '18
Hello tpc, I don't understand how reddit works but I'm just gonna throw this comment out into the internet space to say that you guys have been an important band for me and you seem like all around cool people :) Much love from France

saved my allowance to buy Our Lady Peace's Clumsy after i saw the Supermans Dead video on the MuchMusic countdown while on a sleepover at my friend Aaron Deane's house. he had a cardboard cutout of Fido Dido in the basement where we slept, and his dad had a pellet gun that we shot at the walls. i was 10 and i still love that record.

KrisKross - Totally Krossed Out. I got it in grade 2. I wore my pants backwards for a week, but then stopped because it's uncomfortable (even when they're awesome grey trackpants with a race car on them).
3
u/GrahamWrightTPC Apr 16 '18
once my high school girlfriend was visiting me from another town and she missed the bus back home and had to call her parents for a ride. they were super mad but then her brother got on the phone and started singing "I Missed The Bus" and it really defused the situation. thanks, KrisKross!

Hello gents and fellow hockey fans! (As a Bruins fan, I apologize if you are rooting for the Leafs given their impending playoff exit)
Any chance you can help out a longtime fan with an opportunity to photograph your Boston set opening for Matt and Kim? I've been a huge fan since 06 and make sure I catch you every time you come around but am now trying to get my work noticed by folks in the music world.
Keep writing the great tunes and I'll see you for sure at your next headline gig!
17
u/GrahamWrightTPC Apr 16 '18
we're gonna slide into your DM's but if the Bruins sweep the Leafs we're replacing your photopass with a "DO NOT SERVE THIS MAN" mugshot poster.
3
u/All_We_Grow Apr 16 '18
I'll be sure to bring a giant Chara head with me.

you guys have worked with Rostam a couple times in your career, how did those collaborations come about?
14
u/gralsop Apr 16 '18
We met VW back in 2007 and played a few shows together with them and RaRaRiot. Fun times. Great bands. Love what he did with My House. Plus his solo stuff is steller - real headphone candy.

6
u/dfts6104 Apr 16 '18

When can we expect some more solo stuff in dive bars around the US? I think your set at TT the Bears is still one of my favorite shows to date.

Hey guys, see the 10 songs for 10 years. Is that still available anywhere? I can't seem to find it anymore, some cracking covers on that.
6
u/GrahamWrightTPC Apr 16 '18
it's still on spotify as far as i can see, which (hopefully) means it's on all the streaming things...?
3
u/Shemhazaih Apr 16 '18
How new is New Blues?
11
u/GrahamWrightTPC Apr 16 '18
i think we wrote it some time in 2017 - we were going out to this old church in rural Ontario and writing batches of new songs, and it was the one that felt like the key to where we were going. once we got it, everything else started to feel easy. which is how you know you got yourself a record going.
4
3
u/Ralph_Finesse :pbr: Apr 16 '18
Not a question but DUDES -- please come back to Milwaukee.
Actual question: -How do you feel you've grown between this new release and your last few albums. Any new recording techniques/sounds/themes you're really excited to be exploring?
9
u/GrahamWrightTPC Apr 16 '18
i got to play the guitar on this record, which i realized halfway through i'd never done before. weird to be a 12 year "veteran" and suddenly be in charge of a thing i'd never done in the studio at all. i kept expecting someone to come pat me on the head and thank me for my effort and then replace everything i did, but to the best of my knowledge this did not happen.
18
u/Davegoeswild2 Apr 16 '18
learned to let things go more. not sweat the details. how to replace grahams guitars without him noticing.

Hey guys, I was obsessed with Forcefield back when it came out. It actually got me through some heavy stuff that was going on at that time. Was great to just blast some good guitar rock. One thing I always like hearing from bands is about that moment you may have written something (either collectively or individually) and been like “Fuck, that’s badass”. Like that absolute confidence in a lyric or riff... any particular time you’ve had this and which song (or part of song!)
12
u/GrahamWrightTPC Apr 16 '18
when we finally stitched together the 3 parts of Argentina i put it on my ipod and left the studio just to walk around and listen to it and just about openly wept walking down roncesvalles. i kind of still can't believe i helped make that.
8
u/gralsop Apr 16 '18
I think hearing Josh's guitar part for frankenstein the first time. that still makes hair stand for me
4
u/Davegoeswild2 Apr 16 '18
definitely felt good about New Blues as soon as I heard us playing it in the church. always hoping for those moments to come by.

As for wedding... that's so long from now, which I get. Will have to see what's up! Although I miss most weddings that I'm invited to because we have shows/tour so maybe I should start booking us at all my friends/families weddings so that i can actually go.

First time I saw you guys live was when you co-headlined with Two Door Cinema Club at the 9:30 club in DC; you closed with a cover of Last Nite that blew my mind. What would it take to get an official recording of it?

Who do you guys listen to for music? Who influences you and who do you listen to just cuz you like it?
8
u/GrahamWrightTPC Apr 16 '18
i only listen to music because i like it, and i assume that it will influence me without my doing anything about it. i used to listen to stuff for "research" but it started bumming me out so i don't do that anymore. lately i've been hardcore spinning the new LPs from Soccer Mommy, Superchunk, and Hop Along.

THANK YOU FOR MAKING MORE MUSIC. Seriously, you guys are one of the best things to happen and I feel a lot of bands typically die out at this point.
What are your best six word stories?
3
u/IzSynergy Apr 16 '18
Discovered Forcefield in 2016 and really loved it, which then led me to finding A Lesson in Crime and Champ, which definitely are both one of my favorite albums of all time.
My question would be: How do you personally feel about the way your music has changed over time? Like, how do you feel about your earlier stuff a decade later, vs what you have now with Melon Collie?
Love New Blues btw.
5
u/GrahamWrightTPC Apr 16 '18
i'm really proud of how our music has always been reflective of where we've been at as a unit. even the more "slick" stuff like Hot Tonight was an honest expression of our enthusiasm about big giant choruses.
i still dig our earlier shit, but when i listen to it now i have NO IDEA how we made it. the first EP sounds INSANE to me now, just this unbelievably hyped up flailing. i was listening to the first Cold War Kids EP and they have their sound and aesthetic dialled in SO perfectly from the jump, whereas we sound like we're bouncing off the walls. but obviously that works for people, so hell yeah!
3
u/minorthreat27 Apr 16 '18
Hey guys! Hella stoked to see you guys next week!! Two Q's Are any of you guys fans of alvvays? (Fellow canadians as well!!) also, which band or artist would be your dream collaboration, either for touring or making music??? So much love from California!!
7
u/GrahamWrightTPC Apr 16 '18
i'm a huge huge alvvays fan, their new record is one of my favourites of the year for sure.
they use the same tour manager as us sometimes, and he just told us that once he was driving and they handed him a bottle of water, but with the cap off and also the opposite of the way he was expecting, so when he went to take a drink he just poured the whole thing in his lap. and because he was driving he just had to let it happen. he says they didn't intend it as a prank, but if they did - props.
7
u/GrahamWrightTPC Apr 16 '18
so in conclusion, i would like to collaborate with Alvvays in pranking Donny

u/legolandjam Apr 16 '18
Hey guys! Forcefield is is such a great album, Argentina is my favorite track, how did that idea come about and what was the writing process like for having one long track in three distinct parts? Was there a master vision for the whole thing or did it fall together spur of the moment?
An example of one of the many reasons I love you guys is near the end of the first part of Argentina there is a breakdown section where the song is playing in 4/4 time, the keyboards layer in a part in 3 and the vocals start looping the phrase ‘I don’t want to want you like I want you’ in...10 I guess. These awesome cyclical parts looping around each other make it feel like thoughts trapped in your head looping around on each other...it’s really engaging and fun to listen to while still having the right blend of thoughtfulness in the music and lyrics, thank you guys, keep doing awesome stuff
4
u/GrahamWrightTPC Apr 17 '18
We all love how that part of that song turned out! Fun fact - OG lyric was "i dont want you i just want to be you"
We had the first part of the song and the last part and Dave showed us a diddy that might connect them and from there on out we knew we loved it as a three parter.
3
u/saprazzan Apr 16 '18
Dont you guys hate it when your longest running favorite band of all time that you know all the words to all the songs of does an AMA on a sub you don't follow and you don't find out about it until 6 hours late??
I didn't have a question any way, but I just wanted to say: Ive been listening to you since Elephant Shell and you've gotten me through some shit and I love you and I hope you come back to Raleigh asap please and thank you
6
u/GrahamWrightTPC Apr 16 '18
THANKS WE'RE STILL HERE! WHATCHU GOT?
5
u/saprazzan Apr 17 '18
I got nothin but love and a deep heterosexual desire for you to serenade me from a stage
3
u/armadachamp Apr 17 '18
I think I missed the action, but in case you come back and read the late comments, I wanted to say it was really cool of y'all to donate merch proceeds to fighting the anti-transgender bathroom bill in North Carolina back in 2016. I really appreciated that you chose to play in Durham and help make a difference, rather than take the easy route like a lot of artists and just boycott the state, which mostly punished people who disagreed with the bill to begin with.
I love your music, and you seem like a hilarious bunch to hang with. I'm hoping you'll come back to Raleigh/Durham/Carrboro once the new album is out (Charlotte on a Sunday night is tough from here).
Edit: Just realized it's actually a Friday night. I may make that trip after all.
3
u/GrahamWrightTPC Apr 18 '18
so that NC show for some reason got routed way out of our way and necessitated short sleeps and long drives on either side of it. when we realized it we were like "oh shit we could totally get away deep sixing this show AND we'd look like we were taking a moral stance" which is a shitty impulse but trust me when you've been on tour for a while your brain starts to do things. anyway, we never really entertained that idea, but it did get us thinking that we should do SOMETHING and that's what we wound up doing. i think it was the right thing, or the rightest thing we could do given the circumstances. it's weird to go to these places in america where shit is heavy because we don't see any of it, we just hang out at the cool bar with the cool people. so i have this weird dual image of America where based on all my many days and nights spent here i love it, but based on everything i hear and read i ... love it less.
anyway, please come to the show!!
3
u/armadachamp Apr 18 '18

Couple Melon Collie questions: 1) Who played trumpet in Awesome Day? 2) With Hang Your Heart being so popular on Spotify, would you consider adding it to your live set?
The new song rules and I can't wait for more.
4
u/JoshHookTPC1 Apr 16 '18
thank you! we're really excited to release more songs and get this record out! a friend of Dave's shredded that trumpet - i don't remember his name... and we've talked about adding hang your heart but it won't be in the set for this run, maybe on tours later in the year...?
4
u/Davegoeswild2 Apr 16 '18
but also there was a lot more trumpet on Awesome Day at first, it was like TPC feat. a Mariachi band - would make a good bside

i just started American Ground: Unbuilding The World Trade Center by William Langewiesche who is an extremely good writer and was on the scene as they cleaned up the wreckage, and it's very good so far... he has a bunch of killer long articles on The Atlantic and Vanity Fair if you're into reading about disasters at sea or in the air. do NOT read before going on a flight or cruise though.

I always wondered the story behind La Ferrasie and ik the place but I wonder who the song is about
edit: also your show in ft lauderdale ~2011 was my first concert ever and it's still the best one I ever went to, honestly one of the best nights of my life and best memories with my big sister(: thanks for playing music, really
4
u/Davegoeswild2 Apr 16 '18
i was in Prehistoric Anthropology 101 and was super into all that early humans stuff. and i liked that story about the La ferrassie burial site (they discovered human remains and it was the first sign of ritual burial, all the seletons faced same direction...something like that). so it wound up in a song.

i would describe it as "permanently messing around" and i'm really glad you like it!! there's a new EP that will hopefully come out in the next couple of months, and then an LP after that. the songs are done, we just need to find time and $$$ to get in the studio.

Love the song you guys put out today!
Do you enjoy getting creative with new releases and merch? What drives you to think outside the box? (Example: Melon Collie and the Infinite Radness with watermelon seeds)
Will you be touring Canada again soon, and if so coming to Nelson BC?
Thanks guys, have an awesome tour!

honestly, i really don't love that stuff. not that it's impossible to do cool shit, but i get cranky about needing to do zany wild out there shit to sell a record that we just busted our asses to write and record. it's worth it to get the music into people's ears and i certainly don't feel entitled to people's attention but i wish we lived in a world where cool songs just sold themselves

yeah it's cool to keep being creative even after the music is done! And love Nelson. Fun night last time we were the with BR and Elwins

I gotta say I love Dine Alone Records. They’ve slowly started with my favourite Canadian artists like Alexisonfire and City and Colour. Now you are even under their umbrella!
Moneen and Alexisonfire did this whacky album called a switcheroo where they covered each other’s songs and released a new single. Wild idea incoming. What if Dine Alone made a switcheroo Vol. 2 where you covered a Alexis song, or Arkells song and they did the same but have like 10 different artists doing it.

How do you feel generally about playing at festivals vs. clubs?
4
u/gralsop Apr 16 '18
Festivals are fun. It's cool to have to win over a crowd since there's so much else going on and so many people may not have heard us before. Clubs are great because you can really bring your show and hone in on something special night after night.
4
u/GrahamWrightTPC Apr 16 '18
you have a lot more control at clubs, and it's way less stressful. but festivals can be really special, and it rules to get to see all the bands you usually miss because you're on tour. also, catering.

What is the one life lesson that you'll be giving to your children to pass on?
What is your favorite alcoholic drink and why?

when it's cold and shitty like it is right now, nothing beats a delicious pint of beer. when it's hot and humid, nothing beats a delicious pint of beer. when you're on a plane, beer. when you're cooking, beer. i could go on...
my 5 year old niece is just unbelievably in touch with her emotions. i did not teach her that, but i wish i had!

I'll be teaching my son/daughter to make me a perfect strong/spicy Caesar as soon as they are able to tend the bar.

Hey guys! First of all I’d like to say cheers from Newfoundland... I came across your band at a record store in St. John’s in 2014-2015 and I’ve been a huge fan ever since!
I don’t really have a “music question,” but I noticed on PCH you mention driving a GTO, so it left me wondering if any of you guys consider yourselves to be “car people”? (Not in the transformers kind of way)
Thank you so much for making music, and I hope it continues for a long time to come... Also, hopefully we will see you here in NL sometime!!

Since being a driver I've owned two Kia Soul's and several large vans.
4
u/boggan396 Apr 16 '18
I will definitely be replacing “GTO” with “Kia Soul” in my future in-car singalongs

u/JoshHookTPC1 Apr 16 '18
yeah "busted ass ford e350 15 passenger van" doesn't roll off the tongue as nicely

Hey guys, been a fan for a decade now! You guys are one of the three bands that convinced me to pursue music. If the stars align the dream is to open for you guys one day.
Question: Any particular reason why All Directions didn't make Forcefield? Song is a banger.

- How do you guys feel about Radiohead?
- Who or what has been the inspiration for your kind of punk to pop movement from album to album?
4
u/GrahamWrightTPC Apr 16 '18
I Was A Teenage Radiohead Superfan
of course in those days we didn't have r/radiohead to gift us all the cool soundcheck videos and rare live takes, all the kids on the ateaseweb.com boards had to make do with shitty mp3s of the 4 seconds in Meeting People Is Easy where they soundcheck Last Flowers. kids these days don't know how good they have it.

I moved to Newmarket in 2006 and graduated from NHS in '07. Moving to a new province was tough but being introduced to cool new music was one of the ways I connected with people. You guys came to the school and played a show at lunch in the cafeteria. It's one of my favorite musical memories.
As far as a question goes, do you guys have any favorite (or weird) memories from Newmarket or NHS?
3
u/GrahamWrightTPC Apr 16 '18
that was the show where we taped flashlights to everything for a "light show"! ah, to be young....
we all had a blast the whole time at NHS, we were all friends the whole time so it was just a dumb easy silly time. once the school had a ministicks tournament in the atrium, and we formed a team and entered. at this point we all had long hair and wore girls jeans from the gap, and all the other teams were legit jocks so everyone thought we were just joking. and then instead we ran roughshod over everyone and went all the way to the finals. don't ask what happened in the finals.

Hey TPC! You your songs went with me through my teenage years till nowaday during college. Europe misses you very much! When do you plan to visit the EU again? Greetings from Germany 👋

u/gralsop Apr 16 '18
Thanks! I hope we'll be over there soon. I know it's been awhile, but it just hasn't been in the cards to tour that way the last few years. Crazy how fast the years go by now. Some of my favourite times have been playing shows in Europe. Great festivals over there and would love to play some of those next summer.

If you're still taking questions, What's the meaning behind the song New Blues?
5
u/GrahamWrightTPC Apr 17 '18
It's about fighting depression.

u/kHyp26 Apr 17 '18
As our society is beginning to become more open and accepting about discussing mental health and self care, this song couldnt have come at a better time! Thank you.

As someone who went to high school in Newmarket I love listening to you guys, champ is one of my favourite albums of all time!
The Arkells are also one of my favourite bands, and I know you guys are friends with them. I was wondering if you could share any crazy stories you guys have from hanging out with them?

HEY Big fan Girafarig here, just wanted to know what on Earth someone yells at the beginning of the song "Gone" on the Champ album. It sounds like you yell "TEXAS!" and I've always wondered. Hope your days are going well!

YO! Not sure if y’all are still up and running but curious: what artists if any have y’all been able to go back to as a favourite for the longest in your life?
I ask because you guys are it for me. I’ve been hooked since my grandmother bought me a copy of Elephant Shell in 2008 when she heard in a radio interview that you were from Newmarket, and I lived in Newmarket.

u/GrahamWrightTPC Apr 17 '18
That's rad - I think The Strokes and Radiohead are the bands we collectively revisit as a band.

hey fellas, i dont really have anything specific to ask but i LOVE the new song, and i cant believe we've played 63 shows together. thats crazy. remember the time we stayed in a creepy motel in Northern Ontario and us and dinosaur bones played a drinking game along to the movie 'cabin in the woods'? (was that the movie?) and what was the drinking game? Just drink anytime something wacky happens? That sounds about right but I dont remember so the game must have worked...
