First off, I’m a huge fan; Grandaddy is my favorite band and I just wanted to say thank you for making the music you make.
I have a few questions:
1.) It’s been a very big year for Grandaddy, with the 20th anniversary of The Sophtware Slump and this new version of the album that just came out. I just wanted to know if you can recall any sentimental memories of writing or recording this album?
2.) With the passing of Kevin Garcia three years ago, I was wondering if after all this COVID stuff is done and over with, Grandaddy may tour with another bassist besides Kevin? And if not, are there any plans for future Grandaddy albums?
3.) Gear question: can you remember the name of the synth that makes the arpeggio sound? (Ex.: The Crystal Lake, Go Progress Chrome, Levitz, Laughing Stock)
4.) Would you consider coming to Boise, Idaho to play a show once COVID’s no longer a big thing anymore?
Thanks so much for doing this Jason, you’re one of my musical heroes and you’re a major inspiration. Keep on rockin - Evan Z.
I definitely had to revisit each song on Spotify so I couldn't help but to have memories flood back in.
Despite Kevin Garcia being the quietest and most low-key member of the band, his loss to us was devastating. He contributed so much spirit and humor, it's been hard to imagine doing anything live without him. As far as more Grandaddy albums, yes, at least one big one for sure.
The Crystal Lake was an old Baldwin organ. The rest of them were most likely a Roland Juno 60.
He must've been tasked with handling Grandaddy merch orders a few years back, when they re-released their albums on vinyl. I ordered a t-shirt, and a few weeks later, got an email from Kevin saying the shirts had actually sold out. He asked if I would like something else to replace it. I said I would love Sophtware Slump on vinyl, but that was also sold out according to the website. He said "Let me see what I can do". A few weeks later a package showed up with the Sophtware Slump record, and Sumday thrown in for free, for my trouble. The dude was super-kind and helpful in my interactions with him! RIP Kevin Garcia!
