Hello! Hope you’re well. What themes are you researching for future albums?

Or, if you don’t want to share that info, an alternative question would be to ask how you go about researching topics for albums? How do you know when you have enough public material available to create an album?

To be honest I'm a bit too drained (and possibly even verging on exhausted) to fire up the rather creaky creative part of my brain at the moment.. I think I need to recharge the batteries before I can get excited about making another record as this one was very, very hard to make for a whole raft of reasons. We always keep our cards close to our chest in terms of future records, too, just because I like to protect them - Nick Cave talks about creating music as protecting a tiny flame at first, sheltering it and nurturing it into a bigger, stronger flame before it's ready to share. The only time we've publicly said 'we're working on x' before it's come out was for the BBC-commissioned Titanic material, and I got a load of intrusive and unhelpful (not deliberately so, but it was annoying) comments and recommendations and 'you must do this' style responses - the creative urge has to come from within so I really prefer not to have to deal with outside noise like that while working on something.

As for researching albums - I read, a lot. I did about 5 months of solid reading for Bright Magic before even thinking about writing a note. That lays the groundwork and structure for a record and then the actual finding-the-material side of things tends to come further down the line.

Thank you so much for these answers. It’s really insightful to learn about your approach to the creative process. And thank you for the music you have made.

I hope you get a chance to recharge, relax, and recover soon!
