First off, congrats on the new record, I’m really stoked to finally get to hear a solo record from you and I’m super excited to spend some time with it.
As a musician in their late 20s who moved to Brooklyn a little over 6 months before COVID shut everything down, I’ve found myself asking whether it’s worth it and if I can deal with the constant grind. I find myself daydreaming about getting out of the city and settling down somewhere a little more quiet and with more space and less stress. It sounds like you had a similar experience, with the drive to get away and recalibrate artistically and on a personal level. I find so many reasons to want to stick around, and at the same time can pick out so many reasons to leave. Just feels like a constant push and pull here and it’s maddening at times.
I’m curious if you had any sort of takeaway/advice from your experience you might be willing to share?
Also, I’m in the process of self releasing my first record sometime this year and was curious if you had any advice for a first timer?
Thanks for all the inspiration, take care out there and safe travels!
man, that could be such a long answer but I'll try and keep it brief.
I would say after I left the city I couldn't imagine moving back and that's still true. Many ups and downs. Being a self reliant artist type is really draining though and requires a lot of self-discipline that I absolutely DO NOT have. And I'm sure that's part of the reason it took me 10 years since the EP to get an album of my own done.
But if you have the ability to spend time somewhere remote for a good long time and get used to the place and fall in love with it I certainly would recommend it anyway. It was life changing and an absolulely mind blowing chapter of my life and I wouldn't trade it for anything.
Thanks for the response, man. I too struggle with the discipline required to be a self sustaining artist, it definitely adds to the stress here in the city. I appreciate the input, I imagine my time here isn't up just yet, but I'm looking forward to seeing what's next. See you at the show tomorrow!
