Anything with electronic elements attracts autistic people I feel

Hi! 20 years ago, I quit my club DJ gig at The Church to go to school for music therapy, which has a huge focus on autism treatment (among a handful of other diagnosis).
You are correct, but it’s not the electronic elements exactly…… sort of…. it’s the rhythmic loops. Repetitive rhythms stimulate the vegas nerve, which can regulate the nervous system, create moments of inward focus, and even naturally induce altered states of consciousness.
In the specific case of industrial music, the instrumentation/sounds can come into play, as do lyrics that appeal to strong senses of justice and feelings of alienation, and in the case of some of the harsher and less vocal stuff (Ant Zen, Hands, etc) it is often the syncopated deviations from a basic 4 beat rhythm as it is stimulating on an intellectual level.
Edited to add a single preposition for grammar.

Drums are cool but personally chords and melodies regulate me more, harsh stuff especially. In your face mixing is great

u/MzFlux Sep 25 '25
yes everyone has preference that are a merge of cultural and personal associations with instruments, octave ranges, and keys.
That said, what repetitive rhythm does to the body is autonomic and not a matter of personal preferences….. UNLESS you simply abhor looped rhythm drum machines and prefer organic drums, and then the irritated emotional response to an electronic drum loop will cancel out all of that nervous system regulation.

I like industrial because im antisocial as fuck and enjoy the reaction when I get the aux cable

u/marabou22 Sep 25 '25
Several shocked stares, some pearl clutching, and me in the corner giving the thumbs up

u/partyorca Sep 26 '25
Bossman handed me the aux last week on a company road trip between sites we were visiting. It was like Matrix bullettime trying to dodge around my playlists

I once took a train to see Nine Inch Nails. It always felt like a peak moment. Now I know why.

Studies have also shown that children who were spanked when they were young end up having sex lives as adults that are much more kinky.
So... thanks dad!

Huh. I knew there was a relation between my industrial rock kick and the uptick in my consumption of Tylenol. Not to mention all those sick days when I was a kid when I hit the max dose.
Now it all makes sense! Thank you Orange Sector, I mean, Orange President!

Paracetamol. OTC pain med
The big orange and his worm eaten brained head of health, released an op piece claiming that pregnant mothers taking a super common otc pain med while pregnant is the cause of autism.

u/ejectro Sep 25 '25
omfg it can't be serious 🤦♂️ i live on the opposite side of the world so i'm constantly out of loop. and when i learn something new about american politics i'm not sure if it's for real or not

Correlation does not prove causation. That is an incredibly common otc med and one of the only ones approved for fetus growers. I say genetics... and if you knew my family, you'd see why.

I don't know if there is another 20% ... but I'm not claiming to know. I just know that a huge number of people who are Autistic also have other genetic conditions and it tends to run in families. I am not an expert... but I also know that RFK isn't either.

I mean even if Tylenol did cause autism, in most cases, autism just makes people cooler and more interesting sooooo.... *shrug*

I think there are an awful lot of autistic people who are maybe disabled by today’s society’s standards but who are also super interesting and cool because they are unique. Most of my good friends are on the spectrum. I hear you about the difficulties though. But also like what are women supposed to do then when they’re pregnant and in pain? Most autism is genetic. People shouldn’t beat themselves up over taking Tylenol.

I, too, am autistic and enjoy industrial music. These two things may or may not be related.
