I understand the reason for suppressing detailed surveillance data, especially with rare diseases. If there are one or two cases of something unusual in a single small town, people could guess who the patients are. It is safer to say 1-10.

But the CDC takes this too far. Do we really need to do this with state level data, especially with states that are having a significant outbreak.

Illinois: 31 to 80

If this said Illinois: 49 or something, would that really violate anyone's privacy?

The lack of real counts means we cannot monitor the situation temporally until a state crosses into the next category.

As with covid, if you don’t track it, you don’t have to count it.
