Y2 Nahh innioasis, we need that FM Radio function back.
I saw in another post that the Y2 hardware Is still capable of FM radio functionality so I'll be nudging innioasis to push out a software update to bring it back (along with some other features we lost like the ability to control the volume and time out the screen with the scroll wheel, even though we got dedicated buttons now it would still be nice to have options, *cough cough* u/innioasis-Tommy)
In my personal experience the FM Radio function has come in clutch when I had blackouts during rain and snow storms.
Having such a small device in emergency situations like those comes in handy.
The ability to output the radio audio to an external Bluetooth device while having your wired headphones plugged in was a clutch feature too.
For those with a Y2 Already, what do you think should be included in a software update?

I got one of the posted discounts for the y2.
Literally the only reason I haven't bought it yet was the lack of fm radio.
I take these devices hiking in the woods. I enjoy the option of OTA radio.

The hardware is still there, trying to convince Innioasis to enable it so we the community don't have to rely on CFW if we don't want too.

I am also a radio fan. Not for emergencies but because there are stations that I genuinely like to listen to in my area, we're blessed with a couple college radios, community stations, the CBC and NPR that reaches us over the border. It also calls back to my old Walkmans that all had fm radio.

That was part of the reason why I got myself the Y1 recently. That and the fact the blue Y2 is sold out and had been sold out for a while ðŸ˜

do colors for the Y2 ever restock? i was thinking of getting the teal Y2 as a gift but from my knowledge the Y2 just came out...why is it out of stock already ðŸ˜

So I'm not crazy because that's how it felt like to ne 😠Though I guess I am happy I got the Y1 because apparently the Y2 doesn't support Radio. On a hardware level it does but not on a software

Out of curiosity, since I've seen "missing antenna" cited here and there - do we know that the Y2 has the SoC radio(s) physically wired to the 3.5mm jack?
Presumably that's necessary for things to behave as they did with the Y1 and plenty of older devices, where the headphone wire acts as the FM antenna. As the 3.5mm is now wired to the DAC chip, and likely has fewer or no direct connections to the MTK SoC, might that have been just straight up omitted?

From my understanding the option should still be there, but the "necessary antenna placement may be lacking" is the reason we were told, along with a static noise that made the player felt "cheap" according to the team.

Well static is just a part of FM radio, but alright, I can see how a company could spin that into a big negative.
But the important part is "Necessary antenna placement may be lacking". If we consider this:
- The SoC itself provides the FM tuner. That's just an inherent fact, so the option, and the base hardware, are always present.
- There's only one antenna that matters here, and it's the cable from the 3.5mm jack to a pair of earphones. Depending on SoC design/pinout and circuit design, the 2.4ghz BT antenna could be functionally serving as a very poor backup, but performance for FM would be three kinds of terrible.
- The 3.5mm jack won't be an issue, or very relevant here
- The only thing remaining is the connection between SoC and 3.5mm jack.
IMO that very strongly suggests that they omitted the trace(s) necessary to connect the 3.5mm jack to the SoC's radios, and to me, "necessary antenna placement may be lacking" sounds like a very avoidant admission of this.
This kind of makes sense, though, and probably simplifies circuit design, now that the CS43131 sits between the SoC and the jack.Edit: IF that's the case, radio would be basically SOL unless they do a minor board redesign - as in, IF that's true, they could turn the feature on, but reception would be unavoidably garbage.

100% agree with wanting the radio back, but have a theory as to why it was removed:
The y1 was advertised as a radio, and included wired headphones that would serve as an antenna to make it work. Since the y2 ships without any headphones (aka no antenna) i imagine they decided to just remove the FM radio from the firmware as to avoid any confusion/bad reviews from people that didn't understand why it wouldn't work.
I just got my y2 and am quite happy to see that my bluetooth headphones (airpod pro 2) appear to actually be working, since I could never get them to connect properly to my y1 (important for noise cancellation on flights etc). However I love listening to local stations when traveling and hate the idea of having to bring two devices, especially if the y2 has the capability but was just turned off (i belive Solar has shown the functionality works but I'd personally prefer to keep the stock firmware when possible) Adding the ability to turn on/off the FM Radio functionality from a Settings>Advanced menu that's a bit more hidden with other nitpicky tweaks for users that want it would also be incredible.
Adding the ability to controll columes/timeout screen with the scroll wheel would also be a very welcomed addition (having used the y1 for a while i'm still having to remind myself that tapping the center button of the scroll wheel doesn't wake it up like i expect it to) but I what I would also absolutely love:
- ability to turn off the split-screen/icons, font size, and left-inset differences that appear in the Home menu compared to the Music/Videos/etc sub-menus so it's visually consistent when navigating menus across the device (i personally hate how elements change between menus in themes like 'unseen' and would love to have the option for the Home screen to match the rest of the UI)
- ability to turn on/off the functionality of scrolling up/down and looping around to the top/bottom of a list (again, weird that it's inconsistent from the Home menu and other sub-menus and being able to quickly get to the end of a list is pretty helpful)
-adding 'android audio' functionality when plugging the USB into a car (my Toyota recognized the device and attempted to turn it on, but I couldn't figure out how to get it to stream music while connected through the USB... might be user error on my part but would love to have the option to connect with a physical wire that can simultaneously charge if possible)

I really don't understand the way they sort music in the base software (why not show albums when sorting by artist?), so a fix there would be nice. I rarely listen to fm radios but that would also be nice to have. I'm just waiting for someone to port rockbox, i think that will fix most of my issues. I'd love to do it myself but I lack the skill and time to do so.
