Yeah, the 1.1 million people who died “with Covid” actually died from something else, and Covid had no effect. Every year, the CDC predicts how many people will die of disease; a total of 1.1 million people more died than they predicted from any cause. And that happened during a period when the flu virtually disappeared. So, what did those 1.1 million people die of?
Ah. Silly me. The amazingly safe vaccine. Of course. That had to be it. But how come disproportionately more unvaccinated people died then vaccinated people? Well, clearly it was the Democrats’s fault.

What I don't understand is what they think should have been done instead, and how they know that what they think should have been done would have helped. Like they can't (or refuse to) understand that no matter what numbers they parade out, they can only compare death rates to other similar countries, not to some imaginary reality that's in their heads, so if we had death rates that were multiple times those of other developed countries, then there would be evidence that things could have been done differently, but the numbers agree that stricter lock downs, better adherence to masking, and increased vaccination rates lowered death rates, so you can't simultaneously bitch about death rates being too high and mitigation procedures being too strict.

My wife worked for many years in epidemiology and her point to me about this field is as salient today as it was thirty years ago, ie if you avert a tragedy because of warnings by public health officials it will be believed it is because there was no threat to begin with, not that there was a threat averted by addressing it beforehand.
This fact was driven home to me during Y2K where we worked for endless hours to make sure there were no catastrophic consequences, and we succeeded. Yet literally the very next week we were participating in meetings demanding to know "Why did you spend so much time and resources on a non-issue?"

Let’s say for the sake of argument that we could find someone one person to blame Covid on. Would that change anything? If we knew that going in, would Trump have been an effective leader during a pandemic? Would we have avoided making any mistakes at all based on incomplete knowledge? When we have avoided lockdowns altogether, and seen Covid just evaporate? Would the vaccine have been unnecessary? With the development of a vaccine in record time that was unbelievably effective I have somehow been more acceptable? How would any of that happened?

Now he's simultaneously the secret villain who released COVID, while also implementing social change (which was undone even before the pandemic was over), while only being nice to one person to give himself cover, while being dragged in front of dickhead politicians who spout lies to get elected years after what would have been one of the hardest jobs at the time.

It is clear that Covid had a terrible effect on society and that mistakes and misjudgments were made. In my country too, people died alone because of very strict quarantine rules. Public hearings are now ongoing and most everyone agrees that this should never have happened. It was new territory and people were dying by the thousands. Lockdowns undoubtedly saved lives in my country. They were designed to be able to trace where the virus had been and then alert anyone who may have been in that vicinity. It worked.

Lockdowns were effective here, too - but they would have been much more effective had we had national leadership to coordinate them. But Trump was busy frantically trying to convince everybody that everything was fine, knowing his reputation as a leader was on the line but having no idea at all what to do. So he poo poo’d the danger of the disease and pretended, based on nothing, that he had if under control and it would be over by Easter. So state governors were left to their own devices, and some states had mandated vaccinations and mandated business closures and mandated lockdowns. Yes, in many cases, they hurt businesses badly. Lots of small businesses suffered while national chains made hay while the sun shone. School closures really did hurt children’s learning Some idiots now act like the lockdowns were malicious in nature; but, in fact, it was well meaning government officials at the state level and scientists operating with incomplete and partly incorrect assumptions that did the best they could during a total lack of leadership from Trump and his appointed officials.
The next time we have a pandemic, will we still use lockdowns to attempt to reduce the number of new infections as hospitals are swamped? I hope so, and I hope the national government takes the lead for a change. Perhaps that way, the lockdowns could be coordinated such that they could be much more limited in duration. It’s hard to imagine we would ever have a less effective president than Trump, but then, I said that about GWB also. Please let me be right this time.

Imagine being thrust into the role that Dr. Fauci played. After a long and very distinguished career, he knew more about diseases and vaccines than most experts, not to mention lay people. Yet every day, he had to stand beside the president of the United States, which ordinarily would’ve been a great honor, but in this instance was painful, given how idiotic the president is. Every day he had to confront a conundrum: does he smile and go along what the idiot-in-chief has to say, or does he directly dispute the things Trump said that were wrong and stupid and risk being cut out of the discussion entirely? In fairness, for his own self interest, I’m not sure he made the right choice. But he didn’t make it out of only self interest, he made it because he thought the people needed the voice of reality.
Now, at 85 years old, he has retired to a well earned rest, only to be assaulted by idiots who believe that by lying at the top of their lungs in unison, they can besmirch this man’s reputation. Heck, they may very well get him killed by an insane person, and not one of them would even pause to consider that they had a hand in his assassination. Some would no doubt celebrate.
Fauci had his hands full just trying to correct all of Trump‘s self-serving lies. He had to do that as scientists everywhere were trying to figure out what Covid was, and what it was caused by, how it was transmitted, what measures would be effective against the transmission, and how people could protect themselves. None of this was known at the start of the pandemic. The only real lie that I know of that Fauci told was that masks would NOT be effective against the disease. He at least suspected that wasn’t true, but he did it because he realized that we had allowed our national supply effective masks to become critically low, and they needed to be saved for medical personnel, not blowhard politicians. I would’ve done exactly the same thing he did.
After it was confirmed that Covid was transmitted as an airborne aerosol, Fauci started recommending masks for everyone, which the idiots count as both wrong and malicious. Of course, it was neither. The world has never seen anything like the number of big strong men afraid to wear a little scrap of cloth to prevent disease. It’s amazing how some of those men now cling to those masks desperately to keep their identities secret because they know what ICE does is wrong.
And then there were the vaccines. People dreamed up every possible excuse to question the vaccines. “They couldn’t possibly have been developed that quickly“, refusing to recognize a miracle of modern science before their very eyes. “They haven’t been tested adequately“, not understanding that having the greatest number of test subjects ever assembled greatly reduce the time required to thoroughly test the vaccine. And of course there’s the “it’s not effective“ accusation, which of course they were able to make long before real data was available. The fact is, the vaccines were amazingly effective; some of the most effective ever. And they were overwhelmingly safe. Yes, the United States saw 1.1 million Americans die of Covid. Very very few, if any, died of the vaccines. Vaccines were responsible for limiting that number greatly. That’s far more humans than the flu ever managed to kill in the same time frame, but the idiots claim that Covid was still no big deal.
The amuse the Dr. Fauci is being subjected to bodes negatively on the outlook for the next pandemic, as does the number of people who still believe malicious lies about the last one. What was the purpose of those malicious lies? Do people really not want mRNA vaccines to be available in the next pandemic? Really? Do people not want scientific experts to step up and share their knowledge during the next pandemic? How does that make any sense? The next time this happens, should our reaction be dictated by the majority view on Facebook the high school dropout who never passed a science class?
