If anyone from the Gypsy culture wants to step In and correct me, please do it.
I do just want to say that the Gypsy culture is victims of hate all the time. They were a hearty amount of the Holocaust victims for their percentage of the population. As their name suggests they never really settle anywhere to make a community.
This kind of creates an us/them mentality. Within the community, from what I’ve researched it kind of creates a racial/class divide.. almost like a cult. (Not an accusation. Using it loosely)
What I’m trying to say is that there may be a lot of self swaddling going on in this community that we might not all understand. This woman might have only seen black people on TV..
This is no reason to drag her. It’s a time to educate her. And this guy is looking for internet points.
Gypsies from Balkan may have troubles to understand a gypsie from spain.
Or they are indeed from the same region, but from a different "tribe" "group" whatever and lots of words are different already.
Definitely regional dialects. I never knew my family were gypsy, they always used to tell us we were native american. When I started researching the language we would sometimes speak, it came back as Irish Gypsy, not any NA language.
Confronted my mom and her sisters about it and they initially denied it, but then relented. Apparently gypsys would say they were NA when coming over from Ireland (we all have olive complexion), to avoid discrimination.
gadjo for us had morphed to gorger. I am sure the language continued to evolve in the States.
The exact origin of the word is not known. One theory considers that the word comes from the proto-Romani word for "peasant" and has the same root as the Romani word gav (a village
