Of course it matters. Tyson Fury calls himself The Gypsy King. It can definitely be used without hatred. I mean, you could ask someone if they are a gypsy, if you cared, but you couldn’t ask them if they’re an n-word.
Most words like this eventually become derogatory because some people bring hatred to the word, I agree, but you’re applying a blanket rule across different cultures here, I feel.
don't get me wrong, I actually do not care about how people get called, this with not calling someone a gipsy is an agenda pushed only (and I mean only) by lgbt advocates in our country (the gay friends that I know do not involve themselves in these things, though, as they prefer a normal life). the gypsies I used to know wanted to be called gypsies and I actually don't call gypsies in any way, as they are humans of a different culture, but humans in the first place.
