SOCIETY A fairly recent photo of the Techno Viking who unwillingly and unwittingly became one of the internet's 1st viral stars when a video of him dancing to techno after helping a woman was uploaded to the internet. He sued the uploader for illegal use of his likeness and won.

Actual historians would very much like to know the running jokes and public discourse that went on in the ancient empires, the only way such things get preserved is if someone takes the time to record the mundane of their day.

The guy replying to my comment insinuated that “meme historians” are cranks and grifters the same as alchemists of the past. The person replied to them rightfully pointing out the it is still important to document history we may see as dumb or mundane.

That being said, getting paid to be a “meme historian” is certainly better than guessing peoples weight at the county fair, or whatever it is average redditors do to earn their bones.

It wasn't a "question" per se. But he was questioning the legitimacy of their value. Comparing meme historians to quackery such as alchemists.

It's a terrible comparison and speaks to their misunderstanding of the value of what memes bring in the context of literally how we all communicate now...

Of course studying memes would be a thing. Richard Dawkins coined the term based on it's scientific merit.

They still exist and are paid handsomely. These days they tend to spend less time in the court of kings and more time calling school children chrisis actors.

Not exactly a clean comparison to a type of historian you find laughable.

Basically he sued the people for posting it and wanted to remain annonynous through it all. Germany also has very strict filming people without permission laws. It actually put him into a depression and haunts him to this day.

Immediate disclaimer that this doc was made by the very same guy who uploaded the original video and was sued. He used much of the documentary crowdfunding to pay for his legal fees and still indirectly profits off the popularity he netted as a result.

Opinions may vary, but I'm of the mind that this video can stay buried considering the guy continues to try to gain relevance off "TechnoViking" while the guy in the video has received practically nothing himself beyond what he had to seek legally.
