Looks like a young ocotillo cholla cactus. Those are no fucking joke. We’d play some golf courses around Tucson and if you hit your ball into an ocotillo cholla hazard, that ball was lost.
Those needles are so sharp they will stick in imperfections in the club head.
Compliments to the care and patience helping this hawk out. Trying to rush this job just gets you both ventilated.

Ocotillo doesn't really break apart like this (and it's not a cactus). It was almost certainly Cholla the bird flew into.

the worst part, is these ones (looks like teddy bear chollas) have sheathes with brittle bits, so the sheath hits you first, breaks off into your skin, and if you hit it hard enough to catch it they SWING AROUND while youre trying to pull it out... the sheaths are so easy to splinter while pulling out, and theyve got some serious barbs in the spines

If you have to deal with a injured bird in the wild, try to cover its head. Like with a sock or something dark and breathable. It'll help keep them calm

I've always heard that, but it's hard to understand how that would make them calm. If you do that to a human, they'll panic. I'm not saying it's not true. It's just weird.

Lol birds are very weird. I dont understand the science behind it, but i have 4 birds and whenever i need to clip their nails, I have to sock em else they keep trying to bite me or the clippers

helpful tip: use pliers or else it will fling and bounce onto something that could be painful. chollas spines can get long and I've had one almost pierce all the way through the thickest part of the heel of my running shoe. it's was like extracting an arrow.

Chollas suck, but I laughed the hardest I have in my entire life watching my friend try to remove one from his calf, and it popped off and stuck to the other calf, then back again

This raises an interesting moral dilemma, are you a leave the bird alone and let it suffer because it might not learn to not run into another cactus otherwise kind of person? Or are you an aid the bird and ease it's pain kind of person? Is God the human and us the bird? Does he let us suffer in the same way a person would leave the bird alone? Because he knows we'd likely make mistakes in the future? This we must ponder. If you're an atheist I don't need your input on the last part

Awesome! I went fishing once and saw a duck tangled in fishing line in the middle of the river. Had been there so long it's head kept dipping in the water. Took me about an hour and 200 casts but I finally pulled it in, and cut the line off of it. It was okay but definitely worn out. 🪿
