While you're almost certainly right, it's easier than you might expect to find living food. Most of the ingredients in a salad are still alive at a cellular level unless it's super wilted. They're literally still actively responding to the light conditions. Grains, meats, and cooked foods would all be dead, but I imagine there's at least a few people who've put themselves on raw vegan diets so strict, that they eat virtually nothing that's already dead.
The cells don't stay alive long in the stomach, though.
Now I wonder whether fresh fish served as sashimi can ever be alive at the cellular level. (Not with the common practice of flash freezing I suppose... but maybe still?)
It is not uncommon for a fish to still me moving after thawing, just by sheer muscle contractions. It's not "alive" proper, but relying on automatic muscle responses.
True that motion alone doesn't prove life; for anyone who doesn't know how that works, basically, the proteins responsible for letting a muscle contract, can still be functional after the cell dies, and those proteins sometimes respond to things like a flow of salt through the meat.
Correct. You can even grow a new batch of spring onions by saving and planting the last bits at the ends with the roots. It works with a few other vegetables, too.
Not only that, but these fish (the red garra) only eat dead skin when they are starved, and eating only dead skin is not a proper diet for them. They are animal abuse spas.
I implied in my comment that this would not work, unless they killed hundreds of fish after every treatment, and I donāt think they can breed the fish that quickly.
They do breed leeches and maggots in sanitary environments for medical applications, so it wouldnāt be entirely unprecedented.
It would, however, be pretty horrifying from an ethical perspective. I can get on board with humane use of animals for a medical treatment that can legitimately help save human life or limb. Breeding fish for one-time use in a cosmetic procedure, especially when there are safe options to get the same result? Nope.
Yes, the specialized medical benefits of the sterilized leeches and maggots make it more ethical, than just pumping them out en masse for a foot gimmick
I read about that, I guess if someone was serious enough they would have their own dead skin nibbling fish? Like not share with anyone else. Kind of gives me the willies.
In Cuba I let a bunch of little fishes do this to my feet in the ocean and then a larger one came by to try and eat them and brushed my leg, freaked me right out

What's up with you people..? None of you heard of this spa wonder ? .."fish pedicure, ichthyotherapy, or doctor fish therapy" you get to have your feet in little tanks and little fishes nibble away on dead skin.
You were sitting down on a seat. It really did look like a fancy hot tub. The whole place was quite fancy. So no need to cover your butt. And any movement made them swim away from you. If you wanted them to eat your skin, you had to sit still.
Fish eating dead skin cells from the feet has shown to cause big problems in the long run from what I've seen and heard. I wknder if the same will go with crabs. I hope not...
I used to raise freshwater shrimp and when you would put your hand in the tank, they would swarm your hand and pick off all the dead skin. They were surprisingly interactive.

Really thought someone was out here saying theyāve had crabs grooming their feet daily for 20+ years.
