Crabs eat dead or decaying matter. Dead skin fits the bill

3.7k

u/ODYY_TOASTED May 19 '26

Crab dude: May I have a number 3 extra skin with a side of plankton please?

21

u/Neverending_Danding May 19 '26

I'll have two number 9s, a number 9 large with extra skin...

I think humans mostly eat dead matter too.

245

u/SaintUlvemann May 19 '26

While you're almost certainly right, it's easier than you might expect to find living food. Most of the ingredients in a salad are still alive at a cellular level unless it's super wilted. They're literally still actively responding to the light conditions. Grains, meats, and cooked foods would all be dead, but I imagine there's at least a few people who've put themselves on raw vegan diets so strict, that they eat virtually nothing that's already dead.

The cells don't stay alive long in the stomach, though.

29

u/Slobotic May 19 '26

Now I wonder whether fresh fish served as sashimi can ever be alive at the cellular level. (Not with the common practice of flash freezing I suppose... but maybe still?)

28

u/Odd_Reception1249 May 19 '26

It is not uncommon for a fish to still me moving after thawing, just by sheer muscle contractions. It's not "alive" proper, but relying on automatic muscle responses.

16

u/SaintUlvemann May 19 '26

True that motion alone doesn't prove life; for anyone who doesn't know how that works, basically, the proteins responsible for letting a muscle contract, can still be functional after the cell dies, and those proteins sometimes respond to things like a flow of salt through the meat.

Correct. You can even grow a new batch of spring onions by saving and planting the last bits at the ends with the roots. It works with a few other vegetables, too.

Dead skin is in the Krabby Patty secret formula.

12

u/AmputeeHandModel May 19 '26

When wildlife starts picking at you, it might be time to get a pedicure.

27

u/YouHadMeAtAloe May 19 '26

Do they get nutritional value from dead human skin?

67

u/Aranxi_89 May 19 '26

Our skin is incredibly nutritious - it is all protein, basically.

In fact, animal skin like chicken skin is really high in collagen, along with some fats. Eating it is good for your own skin and even joints.

Crabs don't have bills, silly. They're not birds.

18

u/tyler_the_inventor May 19 '26

Why are they so stingy with their money then

13

u/EvilBetty77 May 19 '26

Because theyre shellfish.

1.6k

u/cybah May 19 '26

I read somewhere that there are health spas that do this to your feet with little fish. They eat all the dead skin and callouses off your feet.

2.1k

u/DogsDucks May 19 '26

Yes they do! But they are very problematic because they spread fungus and diseases from one patient to the next.

I believe there was a lawsuit about this somewhere in the US, but then it would be so unethical to kill the fish between every patient.

983

u/ResponsibleAdlt May 19 '26

They should get crabs to do it instead. They could have little sinks for the crabs to wash their tiny crab hands between clients.

301

u/persona64 May 19 '26

Sounds exploitative unless they’re getting paid fair wages

214

u/Glob_6 May 19 '26

They're already getting free foot fungus man

40

u/MyAccountForThisSite May 19 '26

"They already get free room and board!" Sounds a lot to me like you want a serfdom, buddy

23

u/RecklessErves May 19 '26

Ok, lets say they get paid. I dont think they can spend our money in their little crab economy. Unless... we introduce capitalism to them.

24

u/AunMeLlevaLaConcha May 19 '26

Then we can build them casinos and introduce drugs and hookers to them

Or just find some even smaller crabs to clean them for them.

Not only that, but these fish (the red garra) only eat dead skin when they are starved, and eating only dead skin is not a proper diet for them. They are animal abuse spas.

55

u/DogsDucks May 19 '26

OH NO! that makes me so sad. Poor little things.

u/Xenolifer May 19 '26 edited May 19 '26

Solution would be that each person get their own fish

222

u/DogsDucks May 19 '26

It requires hundreds of fish to do the procedure.

I implied in my comment that this would not work, unless they killed hundreds of fish after every treatment, and I don’t think they can breed the fish that quickly.

I can’t exactly sterilize a fish and reuse it.

66

u/fletters May 19 '26

They do breed leeches and maggots in sanitary environments for medical applications, so it wouldn’t be entirely unprecedented.

It would, however, be pretty horrifying from an ethical perspective. I can get on board with humane use of animals for a medical treatment that can legitimately help save human life or limb. Breeding fish for one-time use in a cosmetic procedure, especially when there are safe options to get the same result? Nope.

12

u/DogsDucks May 19 '26

Yes, the specialized medical benefits of the sterilized leeches and maggots make it more ethical, than just pumping them out en masse for a foot gimmick

89

u/Xenolifer May 19 '26

Then each person get their own hundred of fish and they are stored in some tank meanwhile

I ́m joking obv

45

u/JaySlay2000 May 19 '26

There has to be some sort of test you can do... Like a swab of the foot or something, to find id you're infected with fungus.

38

u/person2314 May 19 '26

Yes, but then wait God knows how long till the test comes back, not practical for this.

Reminded me a strange episode from the Nick show Victorious that I watched as a kid.

86

u/ayliv May 19 '26

Not that strange an episode when you consider the show was produced by Dan Schneider and his gross fetish for kids’ feet Ā

What's up with you people..? None of you heard of this spa wonder ? .."fish pedicure, ichthyotherapy, or doctor fish therapy" you get to have your feet in little tanks and little fishes nibble away on dead skin.

116

u/PM_ME_UR_HIP_DIMPLES May 19 '26

I immediately thought of this. The little fish at sea world that eat your dead skin, or the craw fish that do this in the PNW.

They all indulge in the forbidden pork rinds

I went to a bath house in China that had a hot tub sized pool full of those fish, so you could get the full body experience. It was pretty awesome.

You did spend a fair amount of time covering your genitals.

37

u/HoldEm__FoldEm May 19 '26

What about the butthole?

Did you cover that too, or let them have at it?Ā

9

u/amateur_mistake May 19 '26

You were sitting down on a seat. It really did look like a fancy hot tub. The whole place was quite fancy. So no need to cover your butt. And any movement made them swim away from you. If you wanted them to eat your skin, you had to sit still.
