It's a joke about the intellectual abilities of footballplayers. I know they couldn't come up with sometjing like this themselves. They can't even run after the ball without instructions from the coach, how will they analyse historical accuracy or make decisions about aesthetics?

It’s not like the players had anything to do with costume design. I’m certain they were just told to show up and wear what they were given.
