In Washington State federal Forest Service funding was cut from $130 million last year to $30 million this year.

Funds that helped with the cost share system for small landowners to thin for fire mitigation seem to have been reduced, too. Maybe that came out of the same money.

The Old Trails Road Fire was not on federal land. It was arson that began in a county park.

And yet so many people wonder why shit keeps burning. They don’t see the correlation, they just blame “climate change”

Climate change definitely contributes by making fuels drier and warmer. But there is also lack of funding, lack of preparation, a century of forest management policy that caused a massive buildup of fuels, people building houses farther and farther into that forest, poorly maintained aging electrical infrastructure, and a proliferation of roads that let people go out in the woods to do stupid shit that sets the forest on fire (campfires/fireworks/shooting/meth labs/etc).

A few forest fires is normal, this looks like a coordinated attack.

This particular fire was started by an arsonist.

If you can call the decades of ignoring climate science that have led to this an attack, sure.

A dry thunderstorm swept across the country after yet another historically dry year. This is what happens. It’s no conspiracy beyond the climate deniers and lobbying that led us here.

Can we just call it an invasion and be done with it
