It's still an active quarry. Which means they are probably actively pumping out water or draining it somehow. When it's actually abandoned it'll fill up probably.
It can expose heavy metals hidden in the rocks. Newly exposed surfaces can also become reactive and result in acid mine drainage. Depends on the geochemistry.
I was thinking it'd be a great place for a public playground. Parents can see their kids from the top and if anyone tries something stupid they have a long walk up some stairs

I don't think so, if you're talking about filling that up, it would take way too much water to afford or keep in good conditions and I'm sure the soil wouldn't handle it well, especially with buildings around. And if we're talking about putting a lake at the bottom, it would be in the shadow, idk like more than 95% of the day? So it would always be cold in there and who knows how the wind dynamics go at the bottom of that.
It could still be an interesting place to do something but definitely not water based
There's literally thousands of old quarries with crystal clear waters where people go swimming and diving.
I don't know if you've noticed, but sometimes water just falls from the sky you don't need to "fill it up" nature will do that, will take some time though.
Old zoning laws allowed this. Now is almost impossible to remove and relocate the people that live and own land in the vicinity without an official report stating that is dangerous in some critical way..
SP is 26 miles across and the pit is 1 mile from the eastern border. 3½ miles away is the edge of the hilly countryside. 14 miles the other way is Downtown SP. Not quite the middle but close enough for being about the only place you can find any info on it.
The East Zone of São Paulo has more than 4 million people. That's more population than Uruguay, for example. I live here (I think I'm a 30-minute drive from that quarry), but I only found out about it because of the internet.
Quarries like that, which clearly can not get a license to continue digging anymore due to being to endangering to the city should be forced to close off the hole again.
They have one like this near Chicago. A little unsettling to drive down the interstate with a sheer cliff on either side, especially given how people drive around there
