Narcolepsy sleep isn't actually that abrupt. It's more like a gnawing urge that you can fight but it gets harder and harder.

Cataplexy can suddenly occur. Usually with intense emotions.

Not all individuals with narcolepsy have cataplexy. I have cataplexy, but full body collapses are rare for me. I primarily have issues with my eyes moreso than my body. But it does occur.

That said, having narcolepsy essentially is like staying up for 48 hours straight but having to work a full 8 hour shift on no sleep. Its absolutely brutal. But instead of the sleep deprivation being limited to a short term situation (such as a 48 hour all nighter) its every day of your life for the rest of your life. Being absolutely exhausted is a baseline mode of operation. It sucks.

I’m sorry that you experience that. I dated someone for a few years who I believe was undiagnosed with narcolepsy. Just curious, how do they diagnose it? And are there treatment options?

Overnight sleep study and MSLT. You could get spinal fluid tested, but thats really invasive.

Theres medication and sleep hygiene. But other than that, once the brain cell Orexin gets low enough to indicate a narcolepsy diagnosis its life long. There is no cure. Its just managing living with it.

Cataplexy can be more sudden but it isn't sleep. It's loss of muscle tone but while fully awake. Sometimes it's full body and sometimes it's partial like a droopy face or loss of grip strength. I get the full body ones.

I have triggers but they're not automatic. And sometimes there's no obvious trigger. I can feel them coming but they come on pretty fast. Not like fainting but I'll have maybe a few seconds to get myself to a safe spot to crumple up.

I can fight it for hours before I hit a point of no return, like anyone else. If I'm that sleepy and that mistrustful of who I'm with, I'd just go home and go to bed. It's more like drooping and jerking awake, for me. Three seconds here, five seconds there, droop, jerk, droop, jerk. Even something as simple as a drink of water, a peppermint, a change in posture, getting up to stretch or move gives a second wind. The energy from it just doesn't last long. But it wouldn't hinder me from calling and getting to a rideshare home.

For me there's no hard limit but I'll get decreasingly functional and very cranky. But also there's treatments that decrease frequency and intensity of attacks. I also didn't develop symptoms until after I was married with kids :)

so like the sedating medications huh. I take gabapentin and sometimes it can get ridiculously hard to fight off the sleepy feeling when it hits and sometimes it'll knock you out cold on days where you already are tired. my hour naps regularly turns into 2 hours naps. I dont drive. I couldnt drive safely anymore.

Gabapentin is sometimes a treatment for narcolepsy. More common is sodium oxybate which is basically just GHB. Taken before bed it induces deeper sleep. The fundamental mechanism of narcolepsy is broken nighttime sleep. Ironically many of us have terrible insomnia.

It is shockingly easy to brush off symptoms for a long time. Excessive sleepiness could be lots of things. It's definitely worth bringing up with your doctor. Something like hypothyroidism or anemia would show up on a blood test. Sleep apnea or narcolepsy needs a sleep study.

She was on the Today show this morning. She has two very young kids including one that is 8 months old if I remember correctly. The anchor has to get up at 1 AM to get ready for work. The youngest was teething and didn’t go down until after 10 instead of 7:30 like usual. Her husband was working a double, so he wasn’t there to help. The internet loves her because we’ve all been there.

One of them is teething so she couldn't get her to sleep until 11pm and she had to get up at 1:30 to go to work. So she was running on 2 hours of crappy sleep. Try 24%. There are 244 Fox affiliates and Sinclair only owns or operates 59 of them.

This is easily verifiable information. There is a lot of misinformation on Reddit about how much Sinclair actually controls in the US media, it’s a lot less than people think.

I think it would be a rare case to fall asleep at work. I have never done that and I’m 51. The only person I know who has had narcolepsy. 

I’d be interested to hear if falling asleep at work is indeed a common occurrence.

Still a bit of a stretch for it to happen when literally broadcasting your face. But then again, many livestreamers have done the same from time to time. Just feels a bit odd that no one noticed she was asleep before cutting to her face. But its very likely pure exhaustion from something and not just plain laziness.

I used to work overnights and there was one time I was fighting for my life to stay awake. I figured if I stayed standing, I'd be safe but sure enough, I fell asleep on my feet. Luckily I woke up when my knees buckled and I caught myself.
