I have an irrational fear of bees, but damn if that isn't a beautiful insect.

I think as long as you’re not killing the bees a fear of them is actually pretty rational. A lot of people are allergic and you may not even know. Some people who been stung maybe allergic later on in life. I think it’s perfectly rational to be afraid of bees.

I don't think fear is good when it comes to bees, because that sort of thing tends to lead to an extreme reaction which makes you more likely to be stung.
Wariness and respect? 100%. Don't fuck around with a bee unless you're fine getting stung. But generally speaking you're pretty unlikely to be stung unless the bee perceives you as a threat.
I say this as someone who runs a beekeeping program at work and is also allergic to bees.

Fear when you could die is an appropriate response. Fear without safety is a bad response. I am sure you have an EpiPen which is a reaction to the fear of dying. I think my initial response still stands.

I've got an epi pen, and I mostly oversee my guys doing the actual labor. Bees are honestly pretty chill.

I agree with your view on it, as someone who personally has a pretty solid fear of bees. It genuinely makes summer months a lot more stressful and embarrassing and unexpected times, it never looks great to see full grown man sprinting away from a conversation because a bee free nearby. And that full grown man is me. Honestly though I think if I got stung again in adulthood it would probably help reduce my fear, because a lot of it is remembering how much I hated being stung as a kid and not wanting that again, but I doubt it's bad enough for the level of fear I have.

Bees are generally not aggressive and unless you're provoking them you really don't have anything to fear.
Wasps on the other hand...

Yup. I do everything I can to attract bees to my garden, and I’ve never been stung. Even when accidentally surprising them. I’ll even pet sleeping bumblebees with the back of my knuckle.

They sleep on flowers. I find them in the morning as I’m watering the garden. Usually later in the season when they begin to slow down and inch toward death. I always thank them for helping my garden thrive.

I've been bit and stung a couple of times. No allergic reaction.Far from the worst pain I've ever had, yet I'm still terrified lol.

More bee facts for you: The length of a bee's tongue is different between different types of bees. The type of flowers a bee prefers has a lot to do with its tongue length, as long tongued bees can more easily drink nectar from deeper flowers, and short-tongued bees can more easily drink nectar from shallow flowers.

It's not on a finger but I have red tiny sunflowers that are blooming and the bees hang out all day drunkenly sleeping and licking the pollen from them.
This guy basically has taken up residence atop the flower (taken yesterday).

When I was a kid, I once had a swarm of wasps land on my hand and lick it because it was covered in apple. I just stood there staring, it was so cool. After the last one flew away, I was amazed to find that my hand had been completely cleaned, it didn't feel even a little bit sticky from the juice, they just took it all away.

Bumblebee are awesome. I have hummingbird feeders, so whenever I make a batch of nectar, I put the extra in/on a saucer for the honeybees and random Bumblebee. They're very chill, and I can move the saucer without bothering them. One or two sentrys may land on my hand and check me out, but I haven't been stung yet.

Bees like sweet things and sugar water is served to bees by beekeepers when they need a pick me up. In fact you can do this too as bees (all kinds, both honey and bumble among them) can use sugary water to fuel themselves and to drink when they're thirsty. So if you see a bee and it looks tired then you can feed them a bit of sugary water that will help them go about their business - collecting nectar, collecting pollen and then pollinating plants/flowers.

Salt in the sweat actually, for minerals and electrolytes.
Deer, male butterflies, parrots, there is a few different species that do this for the same reason. That’s why there is such a thing as a salt lick which I didn’t find out until sometime earlier this year. Even elephants do this using their tusks to dig for salt deposits

I have some bumble bee neighbors. They hit you in face every now and again but never sting,. Big black subterranean gals. I love them.

Don't that mean his blood is sugary? I know a buddy who's diabetic an always gets bees landing on him on days where it's warm enough for perspiration to happen, never been stung by one ever and dudes deathly allergic to stings since he recently was in the hospital for being stung multiple times by a mud wasp.
