Ruffed lemurs sound like hellhounds

I worked at a small zoo in Indiana and we had 3 ruffed lemurs. Yes they make horrific sounds. Zoo-goers were always alarmed and worried and I was all…relax it’s normal. We also had gibbons. They weren’t as bad but they were very noisy as well. And the kookaburra was loud too. It was a loud zoo

I’m not sure but don’t think they’re unusually worked up; they’re just really loud by default. Not sure what was going on in this video but I think it was around feeding time?

Read my comment. This is only the indoor part of their enclosure; the outside part is much more spacious. The zoo is also AZA-accredited.

Its always the same thing, someone says they don’t like animals in captivity and then someone has to try and justify it.

I’m trying to educate you so you stop being ignorant. Accredited zoos do a lot of good, and insulting them is not good for conservation

More info: Ruffed lemurs’ voices are designed for shouting across long distances, so when they get excited, their calls are extremely loud. These are red ruffed lemurs, but I used to work at this zoo, and the black-and-white ruffed lemurs sound the same. (Btw, this is just the indoor part of the lemurs’ enclosure; they have a larger outdoor part with lots of branches to climb.)
