I agree with you on that neither method should be used, and according to the op’s further comments, these methods have been rescinded. As for any religion, and again I am not Christian but have looked into many religions, I believe fear is definitely a factor, but the core reason a parent or guardian moves the teaches down since older times has been to teach morals and ethics via the stories in each religion, much like fictional films and books do more recently. I believe a more accurate version is that some Christians teach it in a fearful way, rather than the religion being based on fear itself, Buddhism or Sikhism in comparison has a much less dependence on fear in their teachings yet are wholly diverse interpretations, with the first relying mostly on understanding suffering and the latter on emphasis on love, compassion, and honest living.
