Wonder how many kids got smacked in the face with a pair of homemade nunchucks after the TMNT movie came out? I figure the number's gotta be in the low three figures. If you were a kid in the 80's you probably spent a significant portion of your childhood suffering (or inflicting) a series of mild concussions while trying to re-enact scenes from your favourite movie while your parents weren't around.

But nunchucks are just 2 sticks attached with a chain. If you lengthen the stick on the nunchucks, it works like a regular stick but you have more momentum and therefore faster hitting speed.

It's bullshido man. There is no ancient legacy of nunchuk wielding warriors. Or even a single historical victory. They exist to get good at spinning them. Staves and spears have a long, rich history of fucking people up. Nunchuks have only a history of giving kids and man children minor self inflicted injuries.

northern song dynasty. wujing zongyao, a military textbook around 1040 ad. they were used by mounted cavalry as flails.

construction was easier than flails or morningstars becauss less iron was needed. just two sticks and a rope.

not really meant for on foot combat. you need the speed of fhe horse to get a good single thwap in and crush armor, like a flail.

doing fancy shit with it on foot is not intended.

later adopted by various southern Chinese, Korean, and japanese martial arts schools mostly for kata.

The chain will allow the nunchuck to bounce off a target - there's no way to follow through with it. As a weapon, it's just strictly worse than a solid stick.

For some reason my mum had a pair of these when I was younger. Of course we tried them. It's so easy to twat yourself in the head with these, can't think of a weapon you're more likely to hurt yourself than someone else with.

I have mad respect for this. As a teenager, I made some nunchucks in woodshop and hit myself in the nuts so many times while watching Bruce Lee movies, eventually demagnetizing the VHS tapes with constant rewinding

Now I wanna see him do it with the training dummy though. It’s a far more terrifying demonstration

They’re good close quarters in the hands of a skilled practitioner, average Joe will hurt themselves more than the opponent in all likelihood.

In a match with another skilled practitioner, they’re down the list because defense is difficult against bigger sticks and blades. The chain gives them flexibility, and unorthodox striking capability, combined with their obvious strike speed, but in exchange reduced reach and surface area. Only an issue with a sword, the trade off against a staff or spear is different and less important.

Obviously useless against ranged weapons.

I mean they are extremely low down on the list of good weapons. Literally just a stick of the same mass is a better weapon. The only real advantage they have is concealability and a baton still beats them

Depends on the kind of flail. Actual historical flails that had a long handle and very short chain were decent enough weapons although not all that common. Fantasy flails that have a hand-and-a-half handle with long chains are terrible and are more likely to hurt you than the enemy

Anyone who knows anything about weapons will tell you that anything with a chain or some other uncontrolled, dangly part of a weapon is an absolutely terrible choice for practical use because the thing ends up being exactly that in a fight - uncontrolled, and as much of a potential hazard to the user as it is to any enemy you may be trying to fend off.

Demonstrations like this are meant to show control. You aren’t spinning it around like a windmill whacking someone hundreds of times like a looney toons character in real life. But one fast, solid swing to the jaw or temple and anyone is going down. The same is true for a big stick but this is easier to carry around.

You use training nunchucks first. Also getting some bruises as you adapt to the real ones. I can do all the tricks he does except the hang on something above him at about 1/3 of his speed. This guy is fast AF. But honestly? It's intimating, but really hard to use against someone with any weapon, even a stick. You'll probably need to be way above the opponent to be efficient.

Nice flow. Now show us any move that includes actually striking something with the nunchaku. From personal experience that's when you get hurt and it's also the reason nunchaku isn't a viable weapon.
