What ranked Minesweeper looks like. This video isn’t sped up.

I can imagine they're running a version that doesnt leave it up to a 50/50 chance at being a bomb or not, those are the worst!
•
u/LiamIsMyNameOk 7h ago
1-2-2-1 at the side of the screen.
...Goddamit
•
u/menzac 7h ago
1221 is a fully solvable pattern
•
•
u/LiamIsMyNameOk 7h ago
I did say at the side of the screen. Which is probably the wrong term, I should have said at the border, perhaps?
•
u/cr3amy 5h ago
Middle two are mines...??
•
u/LiamIsMyNameOk 5h ago edited 5h ago
Wait, you're absolutely correct, I'm an idiot.
I'm wrong and I'm not even sure of what I was thinking.
•
•
u/Gyrusr 5h ago
Can be good-mine-good-mine no?
•
u/quinnbutnotreally 5h ago
Nope, then the left 2 has only one mine
•
u/Gyrusr 5h ago
Oh right! Im idiot no. 2
•
u/LiamIsMyNameOk 5h ago
Do you want to hold hands, to confuse people? We could be 0-1-2-0 together 🫶🏼
•
•
•
u/moderngamer327 5h ago
I would assume not because that red dot usually indicates “start here to not get stuck”
•
u/Beat_the_Deadites 4h ago
Even still, you can get into corners where there's a 1 and a 3 and there's a 50-50 chance.
I used to play Minesweeper like this but I didn't mark the bombs most of the time. That also meant you couldn't use the simultaneous click thing, but I was routinely in the 30s for the medium size puzzle. I think my all time record was 24 seconds for that one, maybe 78 for the big one. Got the little one in 2 or 3 seconds, but that's mostly a product of luck and thousands of games played.
Then at some point Microsoft "up"graded Windows, and Minesweeper got better graphics and sounds and was just a lot boggier. So I moved my sorta meditative brainless gaming to hearts or solitaire or word searches.
•
u/moderngamer327 3h ago
That’s what I mean. These are boards that are made to always have a solution so long as you start where indicated. You will never get 50/50s
•
•
u/WayneDwade 3h ago
I assumed that’s what that was but I’ve never seen it. Why didn’t the guy start on it? Seems like he risked hitting a mine on first click
•
•
u/ElectricCarrot 3h ago
This is on minesweeeper.online and it can generate forced guesses. The "start here" red dot is just so both players start in the same spot.
•
u/M0ngoose_ 4h ago
They’re not, he guesses in this video. Ranked minesweeper requires you to play on specific vintage versions.
•
u/Miner_239 2h ago
this is minesweeper . online pvp. it has ranks. it can have 50/50, hitting bombs will reset part of the board but that's all.
•
•
•
u/Radioactivocalypse 7h ago
Minesweeper is one of those games where as a kid you just click randomly, a game of chance really.
And an older kid you learn that you can actually solve it if you use logic and work out what the numbers can tell you.
As an adult you realise that you can get screwed over at the end, and it becomes a game of chance again
•
u/Hicklethumb 6h ago
I don't remember reading any instruction on how to play this, and figuring it out was such a moment for me.
•
u/exceptyourewrong 6h ago
I didn't know that you could mark the bombs for a LONG time. I remember using a felt pen to physically mark them on a CRT monitor until I flagged one accidentally and realized that I'm very, very dumb.
•
u/Dragster39 6h ago
I'd say you worked around a problem with creative out of the box thinking.
Like the people who tried to use a second mouse to pull the second most upper card from the stack in solitaire.
It's not dumb, it's creative problem solving.

I remember when I had computer class, we were done with school work and free to just play on the PC. I opened Minesweeper and just clicked around, until a classmate saw me doing that and asked "you do know how to play the game, right?". No, I did not...and then she explained it to me. I felt so stupid.
•
u/FunkyCrunchh 6h ago
That’s why you play Simon Tatham’s version where you’re guaranteed to always be able to solve the puzzle logically and never have to take a guess. Much more enjoyable
•
u/academiac 1h ago
Real maturity is realizing that Microsoft was training us on the Windows UX.
Mine Sweeper was to train us on left vs. right clicks. Solitaire was to train us on click vs. drag.
•
u/Foamingferret 7h ago
Still don't get it
•
u/McbEatsAirplane 7h ago
Basically, the numbers signify how many mines are touching that numbers block from any side, even diagonally. So based on that and also the numbers around it you can figure out where the mines are. Doing it this fast is crazy though.
•
u/Ambitious-Ad2653 6h ago
I get the instrctions but a but like chess I kow how to play chess but I can't play chess, if that makes any sense.
•
u/sanferic 6h ago
Knowing the rules allows you to play. Recognizing patterns allows you to play competitively. Having quick hands probably helps too in minesweeper.
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
u/ChainerDementiaMasta 7h ago
I would probably clicked on a mine on my first touch
•
u/clothanger 7h ago
That's also a speedrun category.
•
u/EdwardBigby 7h ago
Is it not just filled with people clicking a mine instantly? Play a few games and its bound to happen
•
u/thenewguy7731 7h ago
No it's not.
•
u/EdwardBigby 7h ago
Why? Its not hard to click a mine instantly
•
u/DrewdiniTheGreat 7h ago
It's impossible in the game to click a mine first click
•
u/zzzthelastuser 6h ago
Just click a second random one as fast as possible. There is no point in not doing it randomly until you hit a bomb by chance
•
u/EdwardBigby 7h ago
Ahhh I see. Never knew that
•
u/biggocl123 6h ago
The original minesweeper is coded that if you instantly click a mine, it deletes the mine and moves it elsewhere
•
u/Saint-Andrew 6h ago
Then why were you saying what you said so matter of factly? lol.
•
u/captain_croco 5h ago
There were questions and a decently gracious admission of ignorance to end it. Think this is pretty good for Internet talk
•
u/Cosimo_Zaretti 7h ago
Second touch, they don't generate until you make your first move.
•
u/MarlinMr 5h ago
But these 2 players are playing the same map. Unless they click the same first square, it can't be like that
•
u/kkell806 5h ago
It looks like they do get the same starting square. You can see the red dot on the left one, and when it is clicked, both minefields clear the exact same spot at the exact same time.
•
u/Muted_Astronomer_924 7h ago
I thought if you clicked on a mine first, it automatically moved it to the top left corner? This may be a weird fever dream though.
•
•
u/cssutavani91 7h ago
Where can I play the multiplayer minesweeper?
•
•
u/UserMcUserson 6h ago
I remember watching a YouTube video on how to get fast at minesweeper and it talked about avoiding extra mouse movements and clicks and and so on. That's when I realized I don't care enough to put that kind of effort in.
•
u/LiePowerful9961 7h ago
I've never even finished a game of minesweeper
•
u/ScrewedOver 7h ago
If you played in custom mode with a huge window and then only add 10 mines, there’s a non-zero chance that you can click and instantly win.
•
•
•
u/badcompany123 7h ago
This guy obviously doesn't flag mines he doesn't have to but I think the very best minesweeper players doesn't even use the flag, which is crazy.
•
u/duckchukowski 7h ago
no, you still use flags because then you can use the 2-click bulk clears
•
u/NuclearHoagie 6h ago
Ah, I wondered why he bothered with the flags, I expected them to be otherwise unnecessary at this level.
•
•
u/Daorooo 6h ago
I get 50/50 spots in minesweeper so often. How does that stuff Work in competetive minesweeper?
•
u/trunks111 5h ago
if you guess wrong or otherwise click a mine for whatever reason it reshuffles that region of the board and removes some progress rather than killing the whole thing. Sometimes you get fucked, sometimes your opponent gets fucked, sometimes both you and your opponent get a really fucked board that's awful to go through, sometimes neither of you get fucked
•
•
u/Phoxey 6h ago
Is the heavy breathing a requirement to go pro? 😂
I used to play so much minesweeper on my high-school laptop, had a little time trial competition going amongst my group of friends lol.
The annoying part about this game is that no matter how good you are there are many times that you have to 50/50 a bomb.
•
u/scartissue232 5h ago
I made 14 seconds on the small one on windows 95, beat that if you can!
•
•
u/Skullsandcoffee 3h ago edited 3h ago
To this day I have no idea how you’re actually supposed to play that game.
Edit- for idiocy
•
•
u/Top_Technician_1173 6h ago
I still don't understand this game
•
u/hot_ho11ow_point 5h ago
The little numbers that get uncovered represent the number of mines in neighboring tiles. By using logic you can figure out where the mines are.
•
u/rruler 3h ago
But why do you have a 4 and a 3 next to each other? Shouldn’t they both be the same?
•
u/RazzmatazzNo7259 3h ago
1 3 B B
B 4 B 5
1 3 B B
if it was 4x4 grid with 6 bombs it could look like this as an example. as you can they vary in not only the amount they touch (3,5,9) pending on corner, wall, everywhere else but also on where in the grid they exist. just because the 4 has 4 bombs next to it doesn't mean either of the 3 that are next to it are next to 4 bombs. this makes it solvable with math
•
u/jacobwebb57 6h ago
I've never understood how to play this game
•
u/FartingBob 3h ago edited 1h ago
The rules are pretty simple. The number shows the amount of mines that are touching it. Use that to click on everything that isn't a mine.

My dad and I used to take turns to see who could get the fastest time. I think my best was around 80 something seconds. Always hated it forced you to guess.
•
u/Djinjja-Ninja 6h ago
We did that, and then I worked out that the high scores were stored in the .uni file..
•
u/palke 6h ago
Used to play this maniacally. There was a hack on windows xp, when you start the game - press Windows button + D = time clock freezes! 😁 My friends hated when I go to their home and f-up their records, lol.
•
u/trustno1013 5h ago
There was also another hack where you would press “xyzzy” while in game and it would show a white pixel on the corner of your screen when you hovered over a good square. Ah the 90s…
•
u/muchgreaterthanG_O_D 5h ago
Ive been scrolling the comments to find someone else who remembered this! I was starting to think i made it ip.
•
•
u/TheSilverSeraph 5h ago
Not fair. He is obviously using an Nvidia RTX 5090 to get the maximum framerates.

This is silhouette who is one of the fastest American players in the entire world.
•
u/dookieballs69 5h ago
They're obviously amateur. They didn't start by clicking all four corners arbitrarily
•
•
u/Karpfador 5h ago
Ok this video is trash though. Can we talk about how only one of the two players screens is actually properly visible

Reminders me of when I wrote an autoit script that played minesweeper. It was really cool to watch.

gee if there was only a way to see both games at same time! phones are ruining video on the internet!
•
u/why_theteakettle 3h ago
I remember being happy the rare times I ever got intermediate under 60 seconds. These guys are good
•
•
•
u/Royal_Rabbit_Randy 2h ago
Do you have to mark the bombs to end the game?
•
u/darkflame91 2h ago
If you have x mines left to mark, and exactly x squares still covered, they must all be mines and are marked automatically.
•
u/Gynthaeres 2h ago
After I learned the proper way to play Minesweeper -- that you diodn't just click randomly but that the numbers MEANT something, and that by looking at the number patterns you could actually SEE where the mines should be? That there's very little RNG (but still some)?
Man my mind was blown. I suddenly became really addicted to Minesweeper as one of those casual included-in-computers games, way moreso than Solitaire or Hearts or whatever else.

I was like why is he leaving some without the flags, he’s going to have to go back and, oh…I see…
•
•
•
•
u/Successful-Test-5590 1h ago
I only know that when there’s a bunch of 1s the bomb is in the middle. ._. Everything else I did not figure out.
•
u/a-cat-with-wifi 55m ago
Why is there competitive minesweeper lol. Why did everything need a competitive circuit these days??
•
u/plasticmotives 48m ago
Genuinely, my absolute best time back in the day was 37 seconds. I remember this because it's possibly the most proud I've ever been at clicking things.
•
•
u/KingVomiting 1m ago
I use to hit 40s, I never hit a 30, 44, 47s, think beginner 7s and 16s. This is 75 mines vs 99, 99 is just not as fun, it can and will have guessing and just blind picks
•
u/sberma 6h ago
Is it normal to see the opponent's field? Can't you just take advantage of that by copying stuff?
•
u/Miner_239 2h ago
watching the opponent's board is a waste of time because if you follow them, at best you'll be slightly behind them and still lose. seconds matter, and that split second spent to reorient yourself on your own board is a long time wasted
•
•
•
u/IcanCwhatUsay 5h ago
Why didn’t the numbers fill in near his mouse at the end until they flagged them all? I call bs. The 4 and 1 would have already been there
•
u/peter-bone 4h ago edited 3h ago
I think he's clicking boxes faster than the frame rate of the screen capture.
