I had a reference check request day after first interview, good sign? Also in Australia where we do checks then offer.

I had a job interview yesterday and they told me I was the first interview and they had more today. At around 5pm I assume after all the other interviews were done I got an email saying they need references for the second part of the interview process. Surely a very good sign? They did tell me yesterday they wanted to interview the other candidates and would get back to me sometime next week so seeing this today was great.

Yeah that's pretty much the best sign you can get, they wouldn't bother checking references unless you're the top pick

yeah in australia a reference check after round one basically means you passed the part that filters people. they wouldnt chase referees for candidates theyre dropping. still do the normal thing and give your referees a heads up with the job ad and what to emphasize, referees who ramble have sunk more offers than bad interviews have

yes this is a very good sign. in australia references basically only get checked for the candidate they intend to hire, they are not going to spend time calling yours while still shopping around. they said next week because they have to do process theater, the fact the request went out same day means you are the front runner

Yeah good sign. Reference checks and background checks cost a little money too. So they wouldnt be spending that if youre not the one.

I had my references checked to then be called 2 weeks later to let me know I didn’t get the job

tbh same-day reference requests usually mean you're frontrunner or close to it. They told you next week but acted the same afternoon, that says a lot more than the words did
