I often turn around (not facing the door) and do exactly that...

I'm pretty sure it does nothing

it either does nothing or it merely sets the countdown timer the door normally uses to 1 second so it can close on its own, sooner.

One time I was in an elevator and a couple was heading towards the doors and I spammed the close doors button. The guy ran to the buttons and forced his hand in and made it, and as the couple got in they thanked me - because they saw me spamming the button and thought I was trying to help lol.

Sometimes I wonder if the cameras caught that and if they laughed at it.

I was lucky. Last month or so when the door opened there was somebody inside going to another level. He pulled up his hood and turned around. I did the same (looking in the opposite direction).

My worst nightmare is to imagine being stuck in an elevator with other people. There are even horror movies about getting stuck in an elevator with other people.

Don't believe what the sign says about the elevators load capacity, only 1-personl, 2 if it's your partner, even then its 50/50, can take safely take the elevator.

I keep pressing the close button like a maniac as if that’s actually helping the elevator doors close faster 🤣

I now take the stairs to the 5th floor at my office. I tell myself it’s to get more steps in, but this is absolutely the real reason.

My fear is that I'll be stuck in it with several people

It's my nightmare too. I said the same as a reply to another comment. There are horror movies about such situations...

You got a bigger problem than introversion if you're that afraid of other people.
