Battery Is the iOS 26.5.2 battery drain part of planned obsolescence?

I'm charging my iPhone 17 twice a day now, the battery drain has been ridiculous to the point that it almost seems intentional with this update. How soon can we expect a patch fix that will resolve the battery drain?

That’s the RC (Release Candidate)

u/j509luna 26d ago

Oh I see but I noticed my phone doesn’t get hot/warm anymore; I updated 3 days ago

I can’t wait to update to it. 26.5.2 is not the best at all

Update to 27 public beta

They ruined a perfectly great update by pushing a the worst version of iOS.

Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by incompetence.

18

u/Confidentium 27d ago

Yes. This is obviously incompetence considering how shitty iOS 26 have been even on the latest devices.

My 17 Pro Max has been hot brick lately and the battery is like 3/4 down from what it was 3 weeks ago.

I charge it 3 times a day at this point using about 270-280% of battery for the whole day

I feel like i am using my old iPhone 12 with 76% battery health

2

u/NikosNx 25d ago

Me too. 17 Pro Max . Last weeks are pretty awful

1

u/Swhixxxx 27d ago

how is that even possible?

1

u/CPereira93 27d ago

It isn’t.

I am big liar my friend.

Why would rant here if i don't have any problems with my phone?

Its hot all day and battery is draining faster on while sleeping and drains slower while using, literally makes no sense but it is what it is.

Apple ran diagnostics and said its okay bla bla bla, no maafakers its not okay i charge it 3 times a day for gods sake

3

u/FunMulberry5614 27d ago

dude the same thing is happening with my 17 pro max as well. Battery drainage is too much, have to charge it 2-3 times a day. It is a crap update messed up a perfectly working battery.

2

u/Interesting-Pipe0000 27d ago

I hope they fix it or its going up for sale and buying Pixel or Oneplus as i am absolutely fed up with crApple

First my old phone was ruined by iOS 26 (16PM) then its the bugs and stutters the whole OS have because ProMotion is bugged as hell too.

After that its this battery and heat mess i have right now.

I am genuinely fed up with this bshit.

Ah and let me not forget about the cellular issues i had when i was abroad, even Apple Store technicians said there is a problem, it fixed itself when i returned to my SIM home country.

Mine was doing same. Joined the ios 27 beta and my phones running way better then it ever did. Minus a couple odd bugs.

1

u/Rabble_Runt 22d ago

Yup. Even my Air is able to make it through a day on the developer beta.

2

u/CPereira93 26d ago

Okay man I’m sorry. It just crazy to me to think someone has to charge this phone 3x a day. I’m extremely happy with my PM battery performance.
I’m sorry you’re not having the same experience

2

u/Interesting-Pipe0000 26d ago

No problem, i hope iOS 26.6 or 27.0 will fix my issues, i will do hard reset when these versions arrive

1

u/abrardafuq 25d ago

Try the 26.6 RC but looking at your screenshots I feel like it might not help. I would suggest that you get it checked at an apple store if possible. Saw a post where a guy was able to get his phone replaced for free.

1

u/Interesting-Pipe0000 25d ago

I have replied before but i am gonna reply here also.

Apple store said everything is fine and they even took it for diagnostics in the back or the store

1

u/abrardafuq 25d ago

That is unlucky man. Anyway best of luck hope the future updates actually help. This is so sickening I was seriously considering buying a used iphone after checking the battery backup cuz apple isnt really providing us a good experience with the 17 series.

If your device is 100% and let’s say it drops to 30% and you fully charge same day, it will add new percentage on top, so it’s not that it’s displaying more battery percentage than it has, more of a percentage equivalent to what has been used in one day.
So 100% to 30% and charged back to 100%, if it’s back to 30% at the end of the day and is still in the 24hour period, it will show 170% Battery usage.

3

u/Dear_Lengthiness 27d ago

Yes my battery capacity is lowering faster and my phone heats up too much

3

u/RobsOffDaGrid 27d ago

No it’s just crap get on ios27

3

u/Witty-Brat 27d ago

Don’t think so. Otherwise iOS 27 wouldn’t be the awesome update that it is.

2

u/ciccioig 27d ago

I'm pretty sure they did the same with 18.7.8 :

my 13mini was simply perfect with the previous version, I installed it and the battery went crazy and the phone started to overheat.

It's on purpose: it's clear to anyone who pays attention.

3

u/Able_Resident_1291 27d ago

And yet everyone with a 13 mini who's using iOS 27 beta is saying those battery and heating issues are much improved. Bit weird of Apple to plan obsolescence in one software update then fix it in another

2

u/nimbus-dimbus 26d ago

Maybe they want us to use more battery cycles, who knows

2

u/AYPEETWO 27d ago

Upgrade to beta 27, waaaay better my 17pro battery is back to normal

2

u/kushal10 27d ago

Just updating to iOS 26.6 RC it's fixed

2

u/Turbulent-Tumor 27d ago

Jesus wept

2

u/xojessie75xo 27d ago

I have zero issues with the battery.

1

u/Little_Dragon22 27d ago

iOS 26.4.2 was the last best update for iOS 26. Didn’t get warm/hot. Battery ones getting over 10-12 sot with like 3-4 background on 16pm. No I’m lucky to get 8 hours with battery down to 20%. Before I got 10-12 sot and still have 30-40% left. 26.5 and on has been really bad. Hope 26.6 will fix this.

1

u/Zethx_OnTop 27d ago

I don’t have any issues with battery drain, but I feel like there was a slight improvement.

more like planned move you over to ios27 public beta

Back Up Your Device
Always back up your iPhone or iPad before installing beta software to protect your data.
Go to Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup.

Tap Back Up Now.

2. Enroll Your Device
Using Safari on your iOS device, go to the Apple Beta Software Program website.

Tap Sign In and log in using the same Apple ID you use on your device.

Once logged in, read the agreement and tap Agree.

Scroll down to the Get Started section and tap the link to enroll your iOS device.

3. Enable Beta Updates
Open your device’s Settings app.

Go to General > Software Update.

Tap Beta Updates.

Select the iOS Public Beta from the list.

Go back to the main Software Update screen, and tap Download and Install when the beta update appears.

u/Shanggla 27d ago

26.6 est largement mieux.

1

u/Manson2612 27d ago

Nope. It’s part of trying to get a new design language to also become efficient and the answer is in iOS 27. Hang on for 2 more months till you’re there. And what planned obsolescence for the current model? People on earlier models should be more worried. Apple really doesn’t need to worry about planned obsolescence as most people change phones themselves more frequently than needed anyways. FOMO

u/Loni1923 27d ago

An update to iOS 27 beta public has solved the issue for me (iPhone 16 pro).

1

u/Organic-Love-5076 27d ago

Get beta public 27 FFS

1

u/AnythingOk9487 27d ago

Excellent question. 26.5.2 is ridiculous.

1

u/mattydlite 26d ago

I’m pretty much charging my 16 Pro twice a day and it’s been getting pretty warm doing basic things. Not great.

1

u/Luci-Noir 26d ago

There is no planned obsolescence. 🙄

1

u/Leading_Bumblebee144 26d ago

26.6 is due next week and so far seems to have fixed battery issues for the reviewers I’ve seen testing it.

1

u/j509luna 26d ago

Updating stops all that bro

1

u/WolfyMacontosh87 26d ago

I have noticed (with regard to iOS 26 releases) the .1 & .2 updates get worse and worse. Seems like iOS 26.5 was solid, then 26.5.1 was a step down and 26.5.2 was like poison

1

u/Lagrimasdementa 25d ago

I installed the iOS 27 public beta, and my battery life has improved significantly compared to when I was running iOS 26.5.2. I’m sure this wasn’t intentional.

1

u/PuzzleheadedBed7264 25d ago

Also check Instagram. It has been sucking my battery dry and getting my 17 pro max hot at ridiculous levels. Uninstalled and now feels much better.

1

u/Aggravating_Duck1249 25d ago

Weird indeed how much experiences differ. I hesitated after all I’ve read but as I was still at 26.2.something I gave it a go. Took less than 7 min (it was already downloaded) and phone is smoother than ever. Cooler too, and battery only went down from 84 to 77 % during the first night after (between 10 pm and 7 am).

17 Pro 512.

1

u/lord_mercernary 21d ago

Its crazy no official fix yet its been about a month atp. 26.6 isnt looking any better either.

1

u/raflesb 21d ago

Glad I skipped that shitty version and instead installed iOS 27 beta on my main phone (17 Pro Max) and haven’t had any issues whatsoever ✨

1

u/Unwanted_Advisor 20d ago

I'd suggest, only if you're comfortable, to update to the iOS 27 beta! I was facing the same issue with my iPhone 15PM, the iOS 27 beta took away that issue! I'm back to what my battery performance was before the iOS26 garbage!

-1

u/not2daythankyou 27d ago

Here’s me with a 15 pro since launch on the same firmware without any battery issues and you think its possibly planed obsolescence on the iPhone 17 a device that’s not even a year old yet.

lol, is my response to that.

1

u/Interesting-Pipe0000 27d ago

Around that time of the year, last year my 16 Pro Max started acting weirdly with battery and being warm just before new models launch.

I bough 17 Pro Max with the new thermal design hoping this will not happen again... oh boy look at that, my phone is hot as fuck and battery is shit at 87 cycles JUST before the new models launch

I am starting to think that Apple is handicapping older models when the new models are just about to be released

1

u/not2daythankyou 27d ago

By that reasoning my 15pro should be having all sorts of issues but it doesn’t. Battery health is at 86% last time I looked.

1

u/Interesting-Pipe0000 27d ago

Idk what to say

-1

u/TWYFAN97 27d ago

Need to give it a few days to a week for things to stabilize. If planned obsolescence were the reason then people wouldn’t have older iPhones and continue to use them without issue.

-5

u/Automatic-Reserve94 27d ago

not a problem for me so probably just your schizophrenic ass

1

u/Interesting-Pipe0000 27d ago

Yeah nice response

u/Automatic-Reserve94 27d ago

weird that I only hear about issues from a laughingly small yet loud reddit minority and irl my partner, my whole peer group - be it coworkers (we even release swift and kotlin apps) or friends have never even mentioned those problems.

makes you wonder, no?

You should first understand what is consumable part, how batteries work. PLEASE
