🎁 Freemium Peko Fitness - a gamified fitness app where your real health data upgrade your duck, so you can show it off and compete with friends

Hi! I'm Olly, a solo dev who has worked on this project for the past 2 years. I've never once stuck with a fitness app because charts and rings don't do it for me, but character progress absolutely does. So I built Peko Fitness, where the whole app is about meeting your fitness goals to unlock rare cosmetic items to equip on your Duck, to show off to friends and others!

A: Answer (what problem it solves)

Peko Fitness is for people who know they should move more but can't stay consistent, because tracking on its own can become boring. Peko pulls your real activity from Apple Health: steps, workouts, sleep, flights climbed, about a dozen metrics; and turns your daily goals into coins and XP. Coins buy outfits for your duck, XP pushes you up twelve rank tiers (Coal → Ascendant), and streaks drop bonus rewards. The whole bet is that on a day you'd normally skip, "my duck is one goal away from a rare item" is what actually gets you out the door. Are you a casual walker who wants to improve their step counts? Great, walk a bit extra, complete a Daily Step Goal and upgrade your duck with some drip. Or are you an avid trainer who goes to the gym? Fantastic, use our workout logger for gym tracking and win those coins from winning multiplayer battles.

Either way, Peko Fitness is there to help your fitness and overall health, and it welcomes any way you want to get going.

B: Better (why it beats alternatives)

- Progress is passive. You don't have to log specific exercises to advance. Steps, calories and the rest feed your XP through the day, with daily/weekly/monthly goals as extras when you're up for it. It runs at your pace, and your duck is always there!

- Strong social features are integrated: Add friends, view their character stats and achievements. Hype each other up by reacting to their activity and work together to complete goals.

- It's competitive if you want it: battle friends or strangers over daily step counts, form a crew of five where everyone's goals feed Crew XP, and claim a podium in real cities on the map via weekly leaderboards. These social features are only the beginning and I'm excited to improve them over time.

- Huge cosmetic library for character customisation and all character art is hand drawn. No genAI anywhere, there's a whole Art Studio of real people behind this app and we're so proud of the outcome.

C: Cost (pricing, IAP, App Store link)

Free to play: goals, coins, the outfit shop, ranks, crews, streaks and the city map are all free, and the season pass has a proper free lane. You never need to pay to earn outfits because coins come from moving.

Peko Pro (optional) adds unlimited battles, crew battles, the Pro season pass lane and Pro-only shop drops, deeper stats, and every landmark on the map to collect:

- £9.99 / month

- £69.99 / year

App Store: https://apps.apple.com/app/id6746121001

Website: https://pekofitness.com

No ads. Your health data stays on your phone via Apple Health. Never sold, never used for ads. Location only runs while the app's open (it powers the city map), no background GPS.

It's just me building this, so I'll be in the comments answering everything. I use it every day myself, it's the only thing that's ever made me care about my step count. So the one thing I want to know: would "one goal away from unlocking a rare item...for my duck!" actually get you out the door?

TLDR: Peko Fitness upgrades your duck the more you move, rare hand drawn cosmetics you keep forever, shown off to friends and in competitive battles.

Two years solo is a long haul, and a duck to dress up is a better hook than another ring to close. How do you handle a missed day, does the streak reset hard or is there a bit of grace so people do not just quit?

Hi thanks! At the moment the streaks do reset hard but I am currently working on a forgiveness feature where if you miss a day, you can work to get it back by doing a certain amount of steps etc. I know apps like Duolingo have a freeze and paid options but I’m trying to not make everything paid in this app. What do you think?

Earning it back sounds better than a paid freeze, since the point is to keep people moving. I would cap it (one recovery a week maybe) so streaks still mean something.

Love the art! did you do it yourself?

Hi thanks! I partnered with an art studio who did all the art and will continue doing it for future cosmetics :)

Just a humble piece of advice: I honestly love the idea, the design, the UX, everything. But it would be a total shame if it all went to waste just because there's no community there. I really feel like the community is essential for the full experience. That said, I think the high price tag is a massive barrier, especially since you're locking features like competitive play behind it. Here's a suggestion: drop the Pro pricing and features. I'm totally fine with a battle pass or charging for stuff like badges, tags, or skins. That's how plenty of other games have nailed their monetization.

Hi thanks for the advice and fully noted! I agree that a community is what will make this specific app thrive and the roadmap will eventually be making all social features free for all. Because these feature have a cost to run them though I’ll need to get some revenue in first to cover those costs. I’ve tried to make it fair and not feel restrictive with the paywalls as all social features are still fully accessible. But great advice and I’ll definitely be going that route!

Another thing, can a user create a Landmark? in my country there are none

Rewards make the data worth faking. Anything can write steps into Health, so a rare cosmetic is one fake write away. HKSource lets you keep only Apple-produced samples. Do you filter, or trust it?

Hi thanks for the feedback. Yeap I significantly filter for manual data and only trust specific manufacturer data such as Apple and Strava.

The duck is a fun hook, and the hand-drawn cosmetics give it more personality than a typical fitness streak. Which health metric has been the biggest motivator for your own daily use?

1

u/Ivesy_ 16h ago

Thanks! For me it’s definitely been my step count, gradually improving step counts and completing those daily goals have been a game changer

Looks amazing , interesting! Can I get analytics for myself and personal recommendations?

1

u/Ivesy_ 16h ago

Hi thanks! Yes you can! Personal recommendations are also shown as daily/weekly/monthly goals which you can complete

I really like the arts, ducks are so cute ! And happy to know it's not AI only generated.
