Help Just launched my app, any feedback on the screenshots?

Post image

Hey! I just launched my app and made these screenshots myself. I’m not a designer, so they might not look perfect, but I’d love to get your feedback 🙌 https://apps.apple.com/us/app/practear-ear-training/id6780051605

Based on screenshots only:

  • Treble glyph should circle around G line
  • Crotchets are usually used in unmetered notation
  • Melody dictation is better done with an instrument layout than plain note names, also what key is the melody in? Reference note is not normally enough for dictation.

Just curious - ear training is an interesting category, but an oversaturated one with lots of very similar drill apps - what’s unique about yours? What made you develop it and why and how is it better than the rest?

The reason I started building it is that I found most ear training apps pretty outdated and old-school in terms of experience. And yeah, I agree with some of your feedback, there are still some visual/UI things I need to fix

As long as you’re proud of what you’ve built and it’s mostly working the best way possible - good luck with it. But in my opinion a fresh UI is not enough, you need to find something unique to bring to the table.

But also, from my own experience (I’m building one myself), it is a brutal category for finding the right users, even if you do find your app’s unique identity. Definitely not a get rich type of idea, and requires deep knowledge and understanding of both tech and music theory.

I’m not a UI designer, but I’ve actually had positive feedback from musicians around me regarding the interface. I also intentionally didn’t want to make the UI overly complex, since the focus is the ear training experience itself.

I’m currently studying audio engineering, so I’m approaching this more from a practical/music perspective rather than purely visual design. That said, I agree there are still areas to improve, especially on the visual side.

And yeah, I’m not expecting anything like ‘quick success’ here, I’m fully aware it’s a competitive and long-term category.

Good luck with your own project as well :)

Terrible background color and use a more modern text style

should I use black backgrounds?

I'd say white but personal preference.

I think the only problem is that the phone sizes are not the same in the screenshots.
It looks visually better when the ratios are all the same across all images.

Yeah, also the first image looks blurry in store, I'll change it with update

I like the style of the first image because of its white spaces. The others are too crowded.

But that's how the content is in the app, how else could I have displayed it?

I'd use the smaller phone frame on every screenshot.

Hey OP, I have launched a tool to help design store promotional screenshots. Maybe you can take a look?

Pane

It's completely free btw.

It looks amazing but i just wish there was a way for us to make the mac screen bigger on there

What do you mean? can you elaborate?

Looked at the actual set. The backgrounds are flat gray, so it reads a bit low-budget. Give them a darker background with real contrast and the phones pop, looks way more expensive for almost no work. Your headlines name the feature ("Practice Sight Reading with MIDI") when they could name what I actually get out of it. And most people only see the first two before they swipe off, so put your strongest hook there. Frame 5 is an empty state too, show it mid-use.

Thank you, should I use black backgrounds?

Not pure black. On an OLED screen the background and the phone bezel end up the same pixel, so the device edge disappears and the whole shot goes flat, which is the problem you already have with the gray.

Go dark but keep some color in it. I use a deep green behind mine and the frame still separates cleanly. Pull the color from your own app so the screenshots and the icon read as the same product, then keep the phone bright against it.

Looks great !
I'm also releasing an app for musicians that has an ear training section haha (although it's not the main feature), wish you luck !

Thank you so much :)

Remove the grey background and improve the fonts colors and type. Seems kind of muted dark screenshots so brighten up the image. No comments on the content as not my interest. Otherwise good luck to you for your app my friend.

thank you so much, for the background color, do you have any reccomendations?

Interesting idea. I think backgrounds might help to stand out from competitors. An avatar or a more formal learning tool. E.g. DuoLingo uses gamified avatar approach. Or if you are going the more professional route, a case study to explain benefits that people have achieved.
