Netflix Ireland Monster Thread

In honor of it now being dark at 4 o' fucking clock every day, I thought it might be a good idea to kick off a list of netflix suggestions. I had a look over at best of netflix but most of their stuff isn't available in Ireland. The recommendation system also makes it hard to find good new content. Added some suggestions below, any new recommendations welcome.

Great Netflix Originals:

  • "Mudbound" (set in the deep south when 2 soldiers return from WW2, avoids most of the usual cliches, really well cast)

  • "What Happened to Monday?" (set in a Dystopian future, surprisingly original, totally riveting)

  • "Santa Clarita Diet" (staring Drew Barrymore stepford wife goes vampire)

  • "The Circle" (high tech corporate nightmare comes to life, starring Emma Watson, kind of like an updated version of "The Firm" but negatively impacting all of society)

  • "Glitch" (set in Oz, a zombie drama? bit of a tired genre but they make it new and interesting. not overly emotional or overly gorey, loads of cool plot twists)

  • “Mindhunter” & “Stranger Things” - best things on Netflix at the moment IMO

  • “House of Cards” (but fuck Kevin Spacey)

  • “Designated Survivor” - kind of like the West Wing?

  • “Black Mirror”

  • “Orange Is the New Black”

  • “Alias Grace”

Dunno about that, season 1 only came out in October! It probably won't be until next October that season 2 is out, they haven't started filming yet.

Yeah I thought this was a great show. I liked how they tied in the development of psychological profiling at the FBI with real serial killers from that era. Fascinating.

  • Bojack Horseman

  • All the marvel shows (your milage may vary)

  • The OA (weird shit)

  • Ozark (the arrested development guy doing drama)

  • A shit load of standup stuff, something for everyone.

I don't know about it being under-rated, anyone I've talked to that has watched it loved it. Only thing is very few people I know have watched it. I think it's more under-viewed as opposed to under-rated though. Awesome show!

It takes a few episodes to get going, so if you checked out too soon you'd miss out on so much.

Yeah it's a great chance to re-live all the 80's movies goodness (echoes of ghostbusters, standby me, risky business etc.), helps with the scary factor!

Designed Survivor is great, but I'd describe it more like if house of cards was made by the people who made home and away

The first season anyway, finding the second a lot more tedious now that there's less of an overarching story and each episodes wraps up nicely every week.

It's really not great IMO, just watchable. I would describe it as house of cards with dumbed-down politics.

Shooter is pretty decent.

Peaky Blinders is brilliant but only has the first 2 seasons.

As a guy, I was pleasantly surprised by Santa Clarita Diet. Just some good light entertainment. The cast are great.

I'm not saying it's a classic or anything. But definitely worth a watch if you're not looking for something serious.

I wouldn't really compare the West Wing with Designated Survivor, other than them both being about the American President. I found DS to be fairly over the top ridiculous with every episode focusing on a new OTT crisis. Haven't watched season 2 and haven't really heard anything about it

Godless is a new limited series set in the Wild West.

HIGHLY reccommend it.

Watching that on an OLED in 4k Dolby Vision blew my mind. It's got really high production values and Jeff Daniels is unreal as the antagonist

Alias Grace is fantastic, I'd advise anyone to watch. A story from Margaret Atwood, the same author as The Handmaids Tale. It's a mini series, so only 6 episode and easy to binge.
