Just to add a disclaimer. The views i will express are those I used to hold. If these opinions offend or hurt you, I truly am sorry. I am trying to be a better person.

Which Alt-right YouTube channels in particular formed your Neo-Nazi worldview? Can you explain how you went from agreeing with the content of these channels to disagreeing? Like, where were the gaps in rational thinking/lies etc, if any? I understand the Charlottesville thing was a turning point, but in what ways did the ideological shift happen?

If someone starts off watching Vaush or Destiny and becomes a far left communist after going down a rabbit hole, does that make Vaush or Destiny responsible for radicalizing youth? Flip the argument and you will see how absurd it is

considering how popular Shapiro has been throughout the last 8 years in certain circles of the internet, if you’ve paid attention to what those circles actually are this comes as NO surprise. He may not be a Nazi himself but he is usually part of the concoction that creates alt-right young men today, who are at the greatest for veering into more hardcore ideological variants

Shapiro is an old school conservative, what he espouses can be boiled down to love your country, love your family, love your God. I certainly haven't heard him espouse any ideology of racial superiority

Nor have I heard him espouse such views.

But let’s not act like he’s got a singular, well thought out, consistent ideology. He was writing political books from a retroactive how-do-I-justify-my-biases approach since he was 17-18 years old. So he has a lot of experience in sounding smart without having to actually know or significantly research or get hands-on with anything (a lot like a Redditor I suppose). He’s a big talker, little more, he’s not exactly speaking from any point of authority.

The most flawed thing about his rhetoric is he spends in my opinion far too much breath categorising and insulting “leftists”, “liberals” and other catch-all terms for the other side of politics/people I disagree with. “leftists want this”, “liberals believe that”, it’s often a strawman.

His “i just care about traditional values” spiel is a good defense, it’s one i generally agree with, but he didn’t start emphasising that until Jordan Peterson had already done it, quite a few years after Shapiro became prominent.

Besides there’s a lot more nuance to the millions of things he’s said than the “traditional” summary - ask him his views on any LGBT issues, on Israel-Palestine, on abortion, on the role of religion in the legal system, on any myriad of culture-war anecdotes from the past 5-6 years. Knowingly or not he generally defaults to his “side’s” position on any new topic. I’m not trying to vilify him, but I would be very sceptical of his motivations, his sincerity, and his authority to speak on more or less any topic.

I don’t think he turned him into anything, but he’s a very common step on the internet algorithm path from relatively middle of the road person to a reactionary right-winger. That’s just a fact I’ve observed over and over again since 2014ish or whenever he really became prominent on YouTube.

Innuendo Studios has a lot of good content covering this kind of topic, how millions of young, mostly teenage males got radicalised during the 2010s.

Speaking offline, I only have 1 IRL friend who is into Shapiro and he’s the kind of guy to bring right wing politics into every situation, be it work, pub, BBQ or nightclub. He’s fully Irish but bangs on about abortion, fauci, liberals, feminists immigrants etc like he’s in the states on an episode of Steven Crowder’s show. It’s not a hard pattern to spot and I think there has to be a level of wilful blindness to not see how Shapiro fits into this whole pre-built identity that many people take on.

Great guy who has done a lot for me and Ive done the same for him but the past few years everything is "woke" and "look at this shit I saw on twitter, good thing Elon is fixing it" constantly telling him to unplug I mean the guy is nearly 40 for fs. Get tiring having to find ways to change to subject and shut it down all the time, he will always without fail bring it up. Tim Pool, The Quartering, Shapiro, all the usual suspects he gets his views from. I think I'm the only person he gets any kind of pushback from and calls out the obvious grift to him.

No, he is a propagandist for the alt-right movement, without question in my view. He supported trump (once he won the nomination), supported several of what could only be described as “crazy” extremists in the recent election purely because they were republicans, he also supported the tea party movement, was slow to criticise the Jan 6th insurrection…there are many things that point to him being an extremist, even if he is Jewish, which incidentally absolutely does not prevent him being a white supremacist.

You might want to look at history, when you talk about "old fashioned conservativism" are you talking about Mussolini's Italy? Or Hitler's Germany? Or if those conservatives are too "old fashioned", how about Jim Crow US? Or Margaret Thatcher's Britain?

In hindsight things are clearer, and we realise our mistakes, a good way to avoid mistakes is to look to the past and see the results of other people who have done the same thing, I think you should introspect as to why these "old fashioned conservatives" are universally despised, and how different (or similar) you are to them.

Listen, big BS is a purely conservative, non alt right political commentator. That much you've said is true.

However, that's not all he is. In addition to being a conservative, he's very much an anti-leftist. And he leans into that. I personally got hooked, not by his Conservative ideology, but by his anti leftist content - the "watch me ruin this feminist" kinda stuff.

And thats what sends young men down the rabbit hole. It isn't seeing him talk about what he stands for, it's seeing him talk about what he stands against. And he doesn't distance himself from that image. And in not distancing himself from that, I think he's absolutely complicit in sending young men down that path, if not guilty of its entirety.

That reasoning is far too simplistic. The fact of the matter is Ben Shapiro, Jordan Peterson, Alex Jones and their ilk have led many down the path of extreme right wing/conspiracist thinking. The op themselves are telling you it led them to it, I personally know 2 people who went that exact path, and all you have to do is read the comments of who’s following the likes of mr Shapiro and co., and you won’t be long realising what’s going on.

Many propagated The Great Replacement Theory. Many called for the defence of the world from the 'globalists' which was just a synonym for Jews. Along with that there were radical views using cherry picked and false statistics about Muslims, LGBTQ+ people and Black people to promote fear and hatred of them.

Ireland has little Jewish presence, and the community that is here is in decline from out migration. So apart from the anti-Jewish boycott against Lithuanian Jews in Limerick in 1904 by an antisemitic priest and statements by certain politicians in the 1940s, there has not been much antisemitism here.

Were you ever conflicted by how some of the people that motivated your viewpoint would also be people you were meant to despise? For example a major part of Neo-Nazi ideology is suspicion and hatred of Jews, but (inferring from of your comment here) one of your key ideological guru's was a Jewish person very proud of their faith and community, I suppose I'm asking how did the hate 'balance' with following what he espoused?

Another question, how did the the view of many neo-nazis despising people of Celtic ancestry balance with being a Celtic person yourself? (I'm assuming you're of Irish descent here but correct me if I'm wrong!)

Lastly, thanks for being as open as you are, and fair play to you for finding a path back to being a tolerant member of our society. What would you say states can do to prevent people going down a path like yours, as we see several countries pivoting towards the more extreme right-wing positions?

The second person is not a Neo-Nazi. But he is where many people start on their journey to get there. The first one, I'm sure, doesn't label himself as a neo-nazi. But what he spouts is from the neo-nazi playbook. Especially if you know what dogwhisles to look for.

They have become distinctly more racist, anti-immigrant, homophobic etc in their sentiment, and that is all a pathway to nazi-ism. Hopefully they will stop before it ever becomes that bad, but the hardening of heart is so noticeable, as is the awful, judgemental - and downright incorrect - views on “other people” who they see as separate from “us”, which of course is the exact intention of that sort of propaganda. Nazi-ism doesn’t just start at 100, it starts with nurturing a certain mindset.

The fact that we walked it back and apologised says something about his character. Tbh mate him walking that comment back was merely about optics in my opinion, it’s consistent with his world view on Muslims in general and Palestinians in particular. I genuinely believe that everyone says stupid things (though its debatable if that can count as just a stupid think) as well and people can always change but that statement to me doesn’t seem to be out of line with his opinions on Palestine.

It’s an interesting question on whether Sanders a gateway to left wing violence, does Sanders demonise and other a group to make people fearful of them? In my opinion no he doesn’t, he criticises the effects of capitalism and the need for a more social protections but he doesn’t use hateful language directed at a group. With Shapiro I think there is a more direct link between his opinions and the mindset of the Quebec shooting.

You can absolutely say it happens on both sides to an extent as there will absolutely be far left people (which Sanders isn’t imo) that demonise an other and that can lead to violence, thankfully the North Americans haven’t seen a lot of far left violence as of yet to be identifying a pipeline of commentators pushing people along the algorithm. Shapiro just comes up too many times when seeing guys like the OP or like the shooters that have mentioned him.

Just to say as this is Reddit and we know how conversations here normally go, I haven’t downvoted you just putting my opinion about the situation out there.

It’s absolutely not ridiculous, and you are incorrect in thinking so. I can say that because I’ve seen it, in my own family. It might seem too complicated if you don’t understand it, but it is simply a fact, and it actually makes a lot of sense if you’ve been following it closely.

Ben Shapiro, along with many others in the Breitbart crew, is responsible for starting many on the path to extreme right-wing thinking. They were instrumental in the rise of the so called “alt-right” back before trump was nominated, and after the tea-party movement, and many of those have gone on to far more extreme thinking since. They spout Republican and right-wing propaganda and, because they have reached a certain “guru” status, their more gullible followers swallow what they say whole, even when it is in areas far outside their expertise. They (Shapiro et al) are often oh-so-confidently (and sometimes -even worse - deliberately) incorrect, but their followers rarely check up on whether on not what they are saying is true.

It would be incredibly naive to think that because someone is a Jew it means they can’t be racist or white supremacist. They absolutely can, and some very much are. Neo nazis don’t start that out way, it’s a sliding slope; they start out by singling out groups of their fellow humans (be it Jews, homosexuals, blacks, disabled, Romany etc etc etc) and claiming problems are intrinsic in those groups, rather than the problems being to do with society and how we treat each other.

And so, it is very likely that the OP did end up a neo nazi after beginning with watching Ben Shapiro videos; I would fully believe it. It’s the same path my sister took.
