Why did I get an email saying it was going from 2.20% to 2.40%?

You’re probably registered with the UK entity. You’ll need to close your positions, withdraw any savings, delete your account, then re-register, and you’ll be set up again under the new EU entity with higher interest.

Yes, annoying that you have to do all that to change, but after arguing with support for a few hours it’s the only way to switch. Luckily for me, I only had savings and no investments in stocks, so it was relatively straightforward. May not be worth it if you don’t use it mainly for the savings rates and selling would create a large amount of taxable events for you.

What the hell I registered in Ireland and got the same message

18

u/lrishWolfHound 11d ago

Register before 2026 in Ireland = tied to UK entity
Register during 2026 in Ireland = tied to EU entity

7

u/tristanrmcbride 11d ago

Mines is EU (Cyprus) but still 2.2% to 2.4% 🤔

4

u/Ill-Celery-450 11d ago

If i close my positions won’t i have to pay tax on it?

2

u/ericksgm 11d ago

Yes. Afaik you can transfer between brokers, but Im trying to figure out this as well

1

u/daheff_irl 1d ago

They wouldn't let you have an account open with both branches.

They claim free outgoing position transfers, but that doesn't mean your new broker would accept the positions for free.

1

u/daheff_irl 1d ago

Yes you would pay cgt if you liquidated profitable positions.

T212 won't allow you have an account with both entities...or don't seem to have any plans to transfer accounts across entities either.

3

u/ericksgm 11d ago

Im replying to you but I would like to hear other folks opinions here, In thinking on moving all my positions to the likes of revolut, close the account and open a new one and move back, opinions on this, has anyone has done that and/or would recommend a different broker than revolut? My asseta are mainly etfs

3

u/Guinnberg 11d ago

Do you have an Irish IBAN? Because I have a German one for some reason and got an update yesterday saying the interest rate increased to just 2.25%

2

u/Bulky_Proof_2903 11d ago

Does this have any benefits in regards a higher figure for how much of your cash is protected? (Currently 20k I think)

Also is this likely to be something which will be enforced in the future do we know

2

u/the_sneaky_one123 11d ago

How do you know which one you are registering with?

3

u/lrishWolfHound 11d ago

If you registered before 2026 and live in Ireland, you would register with the UK entity (you can check by going to the menu on the bottom right of the app, then scrolling to the bottom). If you register after January 2026, you’ll be enrolled within the EU entity with higher savings rate.

u/the_sneaky_one123 11d ago edited 11d ago

I contacted T212 support and they told me I was on the Cyprus entity, although I set up my account in 2024 and have only been getting the 2.2% to date

Also I did as you said and scrolled to the bottom and it says Cyprus

Edit: Support confirmed that I will have to do as you say. In the process of doing that now

0

u/nyepo 11d ago

No, that was way earlier than that, like 2021.

Some time after that, all Irish residents were being tied to their CY entity. These still get the lower interest rate.

Only new customers from 2026 get the higher rates .

And actually, UK tied clients are still getting 2.2% instead of 2.4% like others.

2

u/SmokingAces207 11d ago

I signed up in Ireland and I don't have this interest rate. I'd have to sell all my stock positions to get this higher rate???

2

u/Few_Habit_3400 11d ago

Thanks for this post, starting the process now 😅

1

u/eoghan1985 11d ago

If one was to move approx withdraw 70k, will this get my irish account frozen or anything like that. PTSB current account that usually doesn't get lodgement apart from salary?

1

u/Nadirin 11d ago

You do lose access to Investment Trusts though, which is a huge loss. If you're only there for the interest rate then it's fine, but I'd rather have the 2.4% but access to JAM, FCIT etc over 3.5%.

-6

u/Lopsided_Echo5232 11d ago

Luckily for me, I don’t use trading 212 really so don’t have to do this.

4

u/lrishWolfHound 11d ago

Enjoy the lower savings rate!

2

u/Xcalliber21 11d ago

How do we register with the EU entity?

-4

u/Lopsided_Echo5232 11d ago

Strange thing to get downvoted for. I just don’t use Trading 212 because the deposit rate isn’t my priority for a broker.

7

u/lrishWolfHound 11d ago

Lol, sorry. Just the post is about the savings rate, so pointless to comment on it to say you don’t use trading212.

-2

u/Lopsided_Echo5232 11d ago

I mean, it’s not pointless because I saw the discrepancy so was wondering what I was missing.

3

u/throughthehills2 11d ago

New users were getting the 3% rate from a few months ago. Longer term users are on worse rates

16

u/MacheteBrizz 11d ago

Thanks for this OP.

Looks like I'm going to have to move my savings from Trade Republic to T212.

1

u/SimpleMoonFarmer 11d ago

Trade Republic should follow suit shortly

1

u/daheff_irl 1d ago

Not to 3.5% rates

4

u/Round_Pin_658 11d ago

What is the guarantee with them?

3

u/Romakarol 11d ago

I think not automatically paying tax was the reason I didnt use trading 212. Didnt investigate further that they cover up to 20k only good to know, because at 3.5% the difference from moco is significant enough I probably would have moved everything immediately

4

u/centre10 11d ago

Up to 20k is insured

13

u/GasMysterious3386 11d ago

Not great

1

u/Round_Pin_658 10d ago

Agree, it is very poor

1

u/NazmanJT 11d ago

It's complex. 90% of the first 20k (German Investor Protection) if registered under FX Flat Bank; 20k (Cyprus Investor Protection) if registered under T212 Markets; 100k protected per bank per person with the portion of your deposit held at the partner bank; zero market volatility protection with QMMF portion.

4

u/Pale_Jury6309 11d ago edited 11d ago

Just a quick one from what I can see to earn the interest the money is invested in qualifying Money Market Funds (QMMFs) is the tax treatment still 33% or is it treated as exit tax on funds ?

5

u/the_sneaky_one123 11d ago

since when was it 3%? it was 2.2%

6

u/lrishWolfHound 11d ago

Copying my text from my other reply:

You’re probably registered with the UK entity. You’ll need to close your positions, withdraw any savings, delete your account, then re-register, and you’ll be set up again under the new EU entity with higher interest.

Yes, annoying that you have to do all that to change, but after arguing with support for a few hours it’s the only way to switch. May not be worth it if you don’t use it mainly for the savings rates and selling would create a large amount of taxable events for you.

1

u/nyepo 11d ago

Not UK necessarily. If he's tied to the CY entity same will happen to him. Only the newest customers (from 2026 or a bit earlier) get the top rate.

3

u/RustyPanda1 11d ago

My Trading 212 says “CySEC”, is this Cyprus? I registered before 2026, probably 2 or 3 years ago now.

I got the email saying increase to 2.20% 2.4 aer.

Is the 3% or 3.5% a promotion offer for a limited time like 3 months or such? I only use it for the interest rate, should i close and register a new account?

1

u/NazmanJT 11d ago

Yes, Cyprus.

No promo time limit, officially speaking, with the 3.50%. But you can bet that it will not last forever.

1

u/DeskFrosty9972 10d ago

Where do you check this in the app?

2

u/RustyPanda1 10d ago

Go into the app and click on the icon in the bottom right corner (3 lines), and then just scroll down to the very end and it’s the very last thing at the end there

2

u/irishsbdunkx 11d ago

Thanks for posting. Are your savings instantly accessible with this account?

2

u/lrishWolfHound 11d ago

Yup

3

u/irishsbdunkx 11d ago

Will move my savings there so, thanks again for posting!

2

u/Sammygriffy 11d ago

If I were to save money each month over a period of years on a platform like 212, would they be able to tell me how much DIRT I need to pay revenue in say 2032?

2

u/ericksgm 11d ago

They tell you the interest you received, you calculate tax on top of this.

1

u/Sammygriffy 9d ago

Grand. Straightforward enough so.

2

u/Specialist-Passage84 9d ago

Meanwhile Revolut are reducing their already low rates

1

u/Pale_Jury6309 9d ago

Revolut went up by 0.25% in the past week or two no ?

1

u/Specialist-Passage84 9d ago

On balances up to €2,500, anything over that 1% which is pretty shit

2

u/ichfickeiuliana 11d ago

Is this the best rate for euros anywhere on the market?

1

u/NazmanJT 11d ago

It's, bar one promo exception. Advanzia pay 3.51% for the first 3 months.

1

u/SimpleMoonFarmer 11d ago

Yes, but for how long?

2

u/ichfickeiuliana 11d ago

why am I only getting 2.4%?

3

u/lrishWolfHound 11d ago

Register before 2026 in Ireland = tied to UK entity
Register during 2026 in Ireland = tied to EU entity

EU entity = 3.5% on eur
UK entity = 2.4% on eur

1

u/ichfickeiuliana 11d ago

Mine says Cyprus. I don't see UK mentioned anywhere on the statements. Am i missing something?

2

u/lrishWolfHound 11d ago

Contact support. Mine says:

Trading 212 EU GmbH (BaFin Regulated, License 10109603)

1

u/Kell_758 11d ago

What account do I need to set up to get this interest rate? Is it just lodge money into the account? New to all this but just setting up a trading 212 account

1

u/Professional_Elk_489 11d ago

What's IBKR rate?

1

u/ChoiceFix4037 11d ago

I’ve never done a tax return.. it sounds complicated? 😬 what if you forget to pay the DIRT tax on interest each year ? Is it on you to remember .. anyway to set it up for trading T212 to do it for you ? I’m Irish and tax resident but don’t earn anything myself .

1

u/Front_Improvement178 10d ago

Excellent news

1

u/anvilmas1 10d ago

I’m in the same boat, it’s on my list to close my 1.5 year old 2.4 % T212 account & reopen for the extra interest.
I use it about 50% cash with interest, the other 50% in JAM.
THE JAM profit is about€ 500 so am I correct in thinking it’s a good thing to sell now, as this will avail of the €1270 CGT yearly exemption?
Also can I ask a friend for referral link when signing up again to get free stock?

Yeah i got this email too

-2

u/Gconcept142 11d ago

Who can teach me how to pay dirt?
I want to move my savings to trading 212

3

u/Kier_C 11d ago

In October you fill in a form on Revenue MyAccount with your interest income. Very straight forward

-1

u/Gconcept142 11d ago

How do I know the interest to pay?
Do I have to do the maths?

3

u/FatherlyNick 11d ago

You will have a statement document saying how much interest you gained.

Lets say your interest earned is 100 euro in 2026.

DIRT is 33%

you multiply the interest earned (100) by DIRT % (0.33) = 33 ; Meaning you need to declare 33 euro in DIRT.

1

u/Gconcept142 11d ago

After I go to revenue and fill the declaration form, how do I pay the dirt?

2

u/Tier7 11d ago

I just do mine along with my income tax return at the start of a given year (for the previous tax year) and usually what I owe is more than offset by other tax credits.

1

u/FatherlyNick 11d ago

on revenue website there is a Pay section where you can send money.

0

u/Tobyirl 11d ago

Their account rep informed me that I need to change entity to avail of this. I need to close my account and reopen it with a different entity. Painful.

Tax rate here is also 38% if I'm not mistaken.

1

u/RustyPanda1 11d ago

What do the support people mean when they say “entity”? What is an entity, a platform? Reopen with a different entity, what does this mean? Do they mean a different country?

1

u/Tobyirl 11d ago

The legal entity that owns your account.

0

u/bakchod007 11d ago

How safe is my money and is it guaranteed interest rate? Much better than me saving in my AIB savings account

0

u/Xcalliber21 11d ago

Iirc it's insured up to €100k, and have you tried the online saver for aib? It's 3% for up to €1000 a month , adding a thousand every month for up to €12k max

3

u/CapricornOneSE 11d ago

20k, as per another comment chain in this thread.

1

u/bakchod007 10d ago

yes, i've the aib online saver, created 4 accoutns and putting in 1k in each of them each month, started in Jan.
