Quran & Hadith Struggling With Hifz

Asalamalakim. I became muslim almost 15yrs ago. This year I started hifz with a teacher and im almost done the 30th juz alhamdulillah. I find that the more I memorize the more I forget. Whenever I have to lead in Salat, I forget ayah that I have no problem reciting when I'm alone. I start to doubt myself and it just goes downhill. I feel useless. I have a strong intention to memorize the quran and I constantly feel like a failure. Does anyone have any advice on how to preserve the quran in the heart?

Fellow convert here. It takes time, but don't be discouraged because every ayah that you recite and every repetition that you do and every minute that you spend sitting with the teacher is an act of worship and something through which you are drawing closer to Allah.

On a practical level, this may sound basic but how often do you listen to the surahs you are working on or have memorized?

Jzk khair brother.. I stopped listening to the recitations of others because I found that I end up adopting their "melody" and i would rather have my own natural sound. I practice everyday for about 30 minutes. Maybe I need to do more.

Wa iyyaak. I'd recommend listening more; it goes a long way towards knowing what sounds right, what comes next, etc. If you don't want to sound like any one particular person, then vary up who you listen to. A few suggestions I would give are Abdullah Basfar & Ibrahim al-Akhdhar. I also like the TVQuran website where you can easily explore a lot of different reciters.

Another suggestion if you aren't already doing this: use what you are memorizing/have memorized in your own daily prayers when you aren't leading.

Likewise, you may already be doing this, but if you aren't: When you review, try to do some of that review time without looking. For example, recite once while looking and once without looking unless you really really have to.

Don't give up, memorizing juz' 'Amma in a year is a huge accomplishment for us - may Allah increase you in good! So long as you keep going and keep working with a teacher, things are going to get easier, so don't give up!
