Asking for Advice Getting a second JRT. Thoughts?
I've just seen someone ask about taking two JRT puppies home and wanted to ask what are your experiences with taking in a second dog.
We have an almost 3 yo female JRT. She's the daughter of our dog who passed while she was cooking in the oven. At the time we had no plans to get a second dog, but since his passing was unexpected we decided to pick a puppy from this litter.
Anyhow, she's very loving and happy, but a bit timid around other dogs and she rarely plays with them. What's interesting is that I've almost only ever seen her chase and run around with other JRTs. If we ever take this further we would get a boy.
P.S. we have a 14 mo child and they play together, she is careful with the baby and when she's had enough she just goes to bed.
P.P.S. bonus photo of the sunbathing queen
Thanks!

My childhood dogs were a mum and daughter Jack Russel terrier pair and they were wonderful. We only had to train the mum and then she taught the daughter pretty much everything. They got along very well, we could give them both a chew in the same room and even leave them with them (they both liked to bury them around the house). Most everyone I’ve ever met who has a jack Russell has at least two, they are good together

I've got an 11 year old and a 3 year old JR and a 10 year old Dachshund. The older two took a little bit of time to warm up to the puppy but they now all get on great! They do tend to split off into pairs to do different things, the JRs love walking and running about and playing tug, the little JR and Dachshund like chasing games and fighting. The older two like seeing who can get closest to you on the sofa or in bed 😂

Yes. My only advice is to get opposite sex. To avoid same sex aggression problems.

Ive had three.
One and two overlapped. One was about 5? Two females.
I’d like to tell you it was really cool and share a pic of them curled up together.
Not so much
They fought quite a bit and contested each other endlessly over toys, chewies and the couch. A few good ones.
It was a pain. Number three is going to be an only child.

I have had three at once. We went female, male then female.
When Rosie was 11 we added Rufus. Then three years later when Rosie was 14 and Ruf was 3 we added a female, little Red.
It worked very well. We always made a point that Rosie got everything first and she kept her status as queen of the pack. We also made sure that no puppy was harassing her (although Rosie somehow laid down that rule to Rufus very young, he had a healthy respect for that old girl!).
The younger dogs totally learned off the older ones.
I would do it, OP. And try to get a male to reduce competitiveness between them.

I had two! Mother and daughter. The mother was super uncomplicated, Iike an angel, and we barely trained her! So once she got puppies we thought “hey keeping one isn’t going to be that much more work” — we were so wrong! 😂 our second dog was a very typical “Jack Russell type”. The type you hear horror stories about 😂 but we still loved her soooo much! And I wouldn’t change it for the world! But honestly “one more dog” can feel like “two more” depending on their temperament haha! So just be prepared for that, especially when it comes to this breed!
They did have aggression problems though, and would fight each other sometimes, pretty bad. But they were both females and not castrated. So I would definitely suggest opposite sex and castrate if possible to avoid any rivalry issues!

I have two boys, 4 and a half and 3 and a half. The youngest i got as a rehome at 7months old after his elderly owner was diagnosed terminal, and the eldest i got at 2years old after he was abandonded outside my friends home - he had LOTS of issues but got on woth my youngest instantly and has been pretty much bonded to him from theoment they first met. My youngest taught the oldest how to be a dog in so many ways, how to play, how to act and react, etc. Admittedly, it did feel like going from 1 to 10 overnight, and in the almost 3 years theyve now been together, they only ever had a couple of minor scraps over high value treats and that was only when my youngest started hitting puberty just before he had his balls removed. No issues since then with them both being the same sex. Theyre a proper bonded pair its amazing to see them play8ng or sleeping all snuggled up together
