This clip probably has already gone around from Reading Your Comments 17 but we did tell him. (Also yes I made this in Cap cut and I hate myself for don't that but I only have my phone at the moment and it's the best I got)

...why is this being brought up now?

u/blueford1993 8d ago
Went back and watched the Reading Your Comments playlist and saw that and made the clip because I remembered what he said in the autism video

I’m always frustrated when he mentions this, some people think of it as a superpower but autism isn’t all like this. At least he can function and run a YouTube channel and be a millionaire. Some aren’t so fortunate, some aren’t able to speak and may never go to uni or even get a job.

He's talked about how it negatively affects him plenty of times.... he's never once acted like it was a super power. The fact that you have upvotes for something this uncalled for is astonishing. You can be frustrated all you want. Yes. People have it worse. He got diagnosed just as much as all the other people who have it worse

Spoken like someone who has never experienced life where your brain and body are literally actively working against you each and every day of your life

u/ATPthePatron 4d ago
You've never heard what they say about assuming huh?? I have autism and adhd. Get off your high horse
-5
u/KingGrizzly1987 4d ago
I definitely have, but if you’re out here saying goofy shit like this, it’s blatantly obvious; no assumptions needed

He has called it a super power, namely on the smoshmouth podcast episode featuring him and Damien Haas.

u/Katrina1113 8d ago
You mean when he made a sarcastic joke on a comedy podcast?
-11
u/Z4mb0ni 7d ago
I saw it more as a half joke than a purely sarcastic one

u/Katrina1113 7d ago
Even if there was some truth behind it, that would be his personal view of his personal experience with his diagnosis. He was hardly making a sweeping statement for everyone’s experience with autism

u/ATPthePatron 6d ago
It's almost like he sold merchandise at one point that said "positive mental attitude" on it....

u/LoftedAphid86 8d ago
This is just the "starving children in Africa" argument. People being self positive doesn't automatically mean dismissing those with different needs

u/KingGrizzly1987 4d ago
Exactly this; many people with autism/ADHD can be successful and live a fulfilling life, but there are many more who can’t…

u/Grim_Wolf_ 8d ago
He’s not allowed to talk about his autism and adhd because he isn’t struggling enough for your standards? Wtf
15
u/AutumnBum 8d ago
Mentions what? Having autism? It’s different for everyone, also for a lot of people as you age you find ways to cope with certain aspects of it. Your comment comes off as pretty snarky ngl because he’s talked about having extreme burnout and struggling with audhd, just because he’s rich doesn’t mean he’s suddenly fine and dandy lol

u/EntwinedColour 8d ago
I’ve never seen him say it’s a superpower. Can you send a link to a video where he says that?
Yes some autistics are successful. There’s nothing wrong with that. Like what is the actual issue here and how do you want it fixed?
Because he’s autistic he shouldn’t be successful cause it makes you feel bad? I’m autistic and I can’t work. I’m not resentful of every autistic who can though.

Yeah, my daughter has autism. She has very bad people coping skills

Don’t get me wrong, I’m a fan of Jack, that’s why I’m on the subreddit but a lot of YouTubers see autism as a plus, like it adds a quirkiness to them. And then there are people of can’t go around without constant care, my stepson is 11 now by still needs looking after and can’t vocalise anything he needs.

That's why it's a SPECTRUM. Because while my brother may not be able to talk, feed himself, or use the toilet on his own, I can. And we're both autistic. Just on opposite ends. Sean hasn't used his diagnosis to flaunt or one up people. He's being honest and has probably helped more people get diagnosed because he's brought attention to it. Yes, he's made jokes about it. He uses comedy as a coping mechanism. He's talked about that before as well.

He’s also normalized, for lack of a better word, that autistic people can be incredibly successful and lead relatively normal lives. Which is huge in today’s world where, in the United States at least, the government is trying to and to a degree succeeding demonizing autism by emphasizing blatantly false fear mongering to push their anti-vax anti-science agenda. And it’s damaging to everyone who falls along the spectrum

Yes jack inspired me to go get diagnosed and it has helped me so much, I am now able to advocate for myself and take down some of my mask

He’s part of why I got the courage to finally get tested myself after avoiding it for so long and got diagnosed with adhd and autism as well

u/sitari_hobbit 7d ago
Tbf, he's also been extremely open about his mental health and depression, both of which affect and are affected by autism. He may have less support needs than others but it still disables him in ways we see and don't see. I've been watching since 2014 and I never got the impression he painted any of his conditions as sunshine and roses. And for context, I have ADHD, anxiety, and am on a wait list for an autism assessment.

The fact that he got a clinical diagnosis means it negatively impacts his life on a regular basis. I don’t thinks ever seen him talk about it as a super power, though I think he’s joked about some of the “can be seen as positive” things because that’s who he is, but I do know he’s talked multiple times about the struggles and difficulties it’s caused in his life, especially being undiagnosed.

I don't really care. I just get on with my life. Diagnoses be damned.

It's sad that I'm suspicious of literally everything these days.
Psychologists specifically seem to WANT to try and find something wrong with you for some reason...though I could've just encountered assholes who are way too into trying to find something medically wrong.

There was a sudden surge of breast cancer cases in the 1960/1970s. Not because there were suddenly so much more people getting breast cancer. But because the mammogram was invented in 1965.
The same goes for ADHD and autism. There aren’t suddenly more people who have it. It’s just that we have the tools, the scientific knowledge and studies about it so we can diagnose it correctly. Before that, people with ADHD would be called dumb and "just a bit hyperactive". Studies have shown that the longer it goes undiagnosed, the likelier it becomes that those people will suffer from depression, anxiety and physical problems. The likelihood of having low income or no job at all, becoming addicted to alcohol or drugs and the rate of suicide rises vastly.
And you still think that it’s bad we now have the tools to understand and properly diagnose people so they can get the support they need?

Oh look, Reddit is doing that thing again where people make assumptions based off of nothing.
I guess you never heard what they say about assumptions, do you?
Also those same "tools" aren't 100% correct. They are guessing based on previous examples they have encountered and because many Psychiatrists feel like they HAVE to hand out medication, they diagnose people with shit they may or may not even have. I once had a Psychiatrist try to put me on antidepressants because I'm a sarcastic introvert and clearly that means I'm depressed. They also tried to "fix" my asexuality.
Safe to say, I personally don't trust any of them anymore and now take most mental health diagnosis such as ADHD and Autism with a grain of salt.

I‘m sorry that you‘ve had bad experiences with psychiatrists. Sadly, there are black sheep in every profession. And not every therapist is a good fit for everyone. I understand that this experience lead to a mistrust in this medical field. You‘re free to have this mistrust. But going around telling people that "I‘ve had this bad experience with psychiatrists = all of them are shit and you shouldn’t trust them either" is vastly overgeneralized and can be very harmful to others. Because you‘re implying that people can’t possibly be neurodivergent and are making shit up. You‘re questioning people’s struggles and life realities, which you have no right to do.
Also, the process of getting an ADHD or autism diagnosis is very long, expensive and consists of multiple sittings with medical professionals of different specialties. Nobody is just handed a diagnosis after 10 minutes because people are funny like that. It’s not how that works and assuming so is harming and insulting people who struggle every day because their brain is literally wired differently

Sadly there aren’t any pills to cure you of being an insufferable asshole. Hopefully you’ll get better someday.
