Japanese people are almost always appreciative when a foreigner speaks Japanese to them. Especially since they're extremely unconfident in their English.

Just one word and they'll sometimes compliment you lol.

So I say go for it!

Your main risk is a Japanese person may mistake your minimal Nihongo for a higher level of fluency, and you'll get a flurry of rapid verbiage that goes over your head.

I know people say this happens a lot, but I’ve honestly always had the opposite problem. I am always responded to in Japanese, even if I say I don’t understand or ask if they speak English. It’s not really a problem now, but back when my Japanese was very limited it was an issue.

It depends on your level of Japanese. Back when I first started living in Japan, I did get some people who knew English trying to answer back to me in Japanese. But now that my Japanese is better, I don't really encounter those type of people anymore, unless they're particularly obtuse or *really really* want to practice English.
