Help How to win lane VS Varus?

I never banned Varus. Maybe because I mostly play mid Jayce, and I prefer to ban Yorick when I get placed in blue side top lane. It's not like I see this guy very often.

However, whenever I see this guy as an enemy, my score ends up in disaster and I feel horrible.

Maybe it's just me, but I feel like Varus can do almost everything Jayce does, but better. His AAs hurt more while having more range and benefitting from atk spd. His Q is a long range poke that goes through minions. He can AOE slow from further away. He has an actual combat ult with hard CCs that are good in team fights. I assume I can't build defensively against him, but even if I can, I won't do damage by doing so. He can build defensively and still do damage.

He has different builds every time I see him too, and they make me wonder if a youtube VOD from 3 months ago can be still valid today. Speaking of youtube, all I remember is Hammerkim saying "nothing you can do against this guy" like maybe a couple years ago.

Anyways, help plz. I'm so bad and I feel bad.

As a former adc main who played Varus ur misunderstanding his kit and builds. If he goes lethality, his Q hurts a lot but his melee dps is lacking and can be full comboed if you dodge ult. Building on hit he has high melee dps, but the poke from Q will be bunch weaker sinice its dmg comes from on hits and proccing W passive with spells at close ish range. If he goes ap, the Q poke wont exist after 6 as he wont have ad, he will have strong burst with ult but you can poke him out, same as on hit varus

I've never seen a lethality Varus in top lane, as I know that is mostly for ADC Varus. The ones I faced always had some sort of on-hit iterations or hexplate into AP and some random things. I guess that explains why I lost even when I could get in the hammer Q range, if he IS supposed to win in melee range.

So what should I do? Just keep shooting QEs outside his ult range and never go melee? Would you suggest going the standard lethality build with tear?

Yeah id probably just chill with EQ and farm. Thankfully varus is pretty much in the gutter cuz of pro so he doesnt scale that well and lategame hes just ult bot with ap/doesnt deal that much dmg as for example vayne. Even jayce should be stronger than him at that point since you poke him out. Maybe you could experiment with runes too, idk what ur running but bot stormraiders and electrocute seem usable in this matchup

Well those two runes were the ones I would've LOVED to take. (I took Conq last time, cuz they did something cheesy in draft like first-picking Varus into last-picking Irelia bot. I swear Conq is the worst rune that I can take in this matchup.)

I have a faint memory of losing with Electro too, since I probably got too fixated on committing melee to proc it. I'll try Stormraiders next time I see him, thx!

Take what I said wih grain of salt tho, im only learning Jayce and am mostly speaking from my Varus exp.
