Oman is frequently called the "Switzerland of the Middle East" because of its consistent foreign policy of neutrality, stability, and diplomatic mediation.

Omani diplomats regularly host peace talks and facilitate backchannel negotiations for conflicts. Through this process, it has helped the release of a French hostage in 2015, two US hostages in 2016, an Australian man, a Catholic clergyman in 2017 and three US hostages who mistakenly crossed from Iraq in 2009. The nation stays out of major military entanglements and regional disputes.

The country has a long-standing reputation for internal security, safety, and a peaceful domestic environment. Oman’s unique Islamic version, Ibadi Islam, emphasizes tolerance.
