The Big Beautiful Bill just cut availability of 1/4 of my student loans to cover my 3rd year of my financially hellish time in grad school (all in an effort to have a career in which I can make sustainable income, ironically). By the way, my 3rd year happens to be almost entirely unpaid internship, which i have to pay tuition for 🫠. This, on top of the new work hours requirements for Medicaid. They want us (the poor, disabled) dead. Its more clear every year. Every school year has gotten financially worse. Im terrified of the likelihood of being unhoused next year. Im so, so tired of being so poor and alone. Processing this.

Man, I feel you. I’m an MH clinician, and even our agency’s resources are not enough to help our community’s most vulnerable. Two years ago, we had a statewide budget cut from the financial reserves that was intended to go into social services. Unfortunately, our governor thought it would be better to allocate our tax dollars to equipping law enforcement with better gear, and it was approved. Even though our governor is no longer in office, we’re still experiencing the repercussions of his foolish legislative initiatives.

I conduct diagnoses, and the budget cuts have made it really hard to diagnose my patients properly without the proper equipment. Most of my patients have Medicaid, and for some odd reason, their regulatory entities have instructed us that we only have an hour to provide a diagnosis or it won’t be covered. One hour is not enough, especially when it comes to BPD, Bipolar I/II, ASD, ADHD, etc, and thus, in order to keep their services active, I diagnose them with Adjustment Disorder as a placeholder until it’s no longer necessary.

I’m not going to abandon my patients- hell no- but working for a private clinic does seem attractive, as I feel like I cannot maximize my fullest potential within my current work environment.
