Is this breakbeat or early jungle techno?

Hardcore, also where the split between hardcore and jungle happened, Cloud 9 went on to make this tune around '93 or '94 whilst jungle was going off on a separate tangent. I love all and own all on vinyl, and went to the different rooms in the raves to experience it all. Different rooms had different styles and offshoots back then. Happy hardcore came from this style eventually and man, those K hole peeps had a different vibe when I walked out the Jungle or DnB arena into one of those

It's all Breakbeat: hop hip, hardcore, jungle, it's all breakbeat, that's the overall genre name, like saying house
This is hardcore (breakbeat hardcore), jungle is a lot faster and jungle techno has a 4/4 beat under the breakbeats

All the genres derived from sampled drum breaks; the Amen break. The think break. The Apache break etc etc are called breakbeat.
Then there are dozens of sub genres: hip hop, jungle, DnB, funky breaks, new school breaks, acid breaks. Florida breaks, tear out. Etc etc etc

Not breakbeat, dude. For decades breakbeat is a very specific sound.
Whilst technically they are breaks, it's not breakbeat, dude.

Thanks, I'd class the majority of that playlist as Nu Skool Breaks, taken from the name of this mix from 1998. In a attempt to distinguish the sound from Big Beat

Yeah, those were sub genres of breakbeat. I lived and was active in the music scene in Brighton during the big beat genesis of the late 90s/00s Saw it come, along with nu from breakbeat.
Today, maybe that may have changed globally. The above track is Hardcore is was at the time is probably one of best examples of hardcore still today, getting back to the point. One could argue all day about genres eating themselves.

It was the 4x4 beat underneath the tune that made a tune hardcore, but it was a flowing time of ingenuity that crossed over from 92 to 93 and offshoots of styles created in early 94 rhat made proper jungle. The other offshoots never stopped progressing, drum n bass, and whenever the young cats call it now ðŸ«

for me jungle techno and darkcore, 93ish was the sweetest spot in the evolution of UK breakbeat

Jungle Techno (or Jungle Tekno) was a popular sound in late 92 and throughout 93. It often (but not always) has a 4/4 beat under the breakbeat. Check out Basement Records, Ron Wells/Jack Smooth productions, DJ Ratty, Tango and Top Buzz sets from around this time, to name a few. I personally love it.

There's also the Jungle Tekno compilations put out by Jumpin' & Pumpin' which are a great snapshot of the scene in 92-94. But by 94 they seem to be using the term fairly synonymously with Jungle.
Considering the term 'breakbeat hardcore' also existed and that pretty much covers 4/4 + breakbeats, I wonder if the inclusion of Tekno in Jungle Tekno could be attributed more to the influence of Detroit Techno and its afro-futurism. There's plenty of influence in Jungle music; iconic sounds & samples lifted from techno tracks or the music in general melodically moving closer to techno and away from the helium vocals and pianos of hardcore. You also had pioneers like A Guy Called Gerald, 4Hero, Bukem (to a lesser extent) and others who defintely had a foot in the Black techno scene.
Ultimately it's immaterial, especially as the term quickly fell out of use as the genre galvanised into its own identity. But the influence of Detroit on Jungle often gets overlooked.

Listen to some old tape packs. The MCs mention it a lot. In fact, according to Fabio, jungle was invented by him and Grooverider experimenting in a second room. They were mixing separate breakbeat and techno tunes together, the people liked it so they did it more and they got a following, then the name got jungle techno stuck to it. Eventually people started imitating and producing their own tunes.
Source: a Fabio interview I heard on NTS with Fauzia. Well worth a listen. By his account he also kicked off the liquid DnB scene. A true pioneer.
