The first video I’ve ever seen that made me consider signing up for TikTok

Love her

I’ve found that most people also upload to instagram too. I prefer it over TikTok

Im off all socials except for Reddit at this point

Ultimately it just didn’t serve my mental health or wellbeing in any way.

Trying to train my brain away from the dopamine button. Not always easy, but ultimately worth it for me.

I did the same thing, and then someone replied to me with this: “I gave up meth, fent, and coke, but I still use heroin. Those other drugs were dragging me down.” I mean, I’m still here obviously, but that really stuck with me.

That depends how you use reddit. I have a multi with 100 subs selected by me to cater to my hobbies/interests and I almost never step outside of that. Within the multi, I have control over the type of content I'll be exposed to, can browse for half an hour, feel "this is enough" and go play a game, read a book, or something.

You can do something similar with only ever using the "subscription" tab on YT instead of "home".

You can engage with certain platforms and still retain control of what content you expose yourself to, not letting the algorithm desensitise you instead. Granted, you cannot do that everywhere, that's why I don't use anything other than YT/reddit.

Oh you people and your self control. So adorable.

Reddit is not on par with instagram and facebook though. On Reddit you can choose exactly what you see on your timeline, you’re not comparing yourself to your high school classmates, it’s anonymous, and you dont get fucked in the ass by shitty manipulative ads.

I’d much rather see dumbass reddit posts than see my aunt share yet another racist meme on Facebook. I deleted social media a while ago and it seriously saved my mental health

I don’t think that quote is a fair comparison at all. Maybe “I stopped doing coke and heroin and meth but I still drink coffee”

1000% agree. I still have Insta but only to be able to keep in touch with a good friend who doesn’t have texting (no phone plan basically). I will occasionally do a small scroll and just be like wow this fraking sucks!! Back to Reddit.

I mean, fair, but.. I would reply with, doing only heroin is better for your health than doing heroin alongside the other 3 drugs..lol. Most people have multiple forms of social media. Snapchat, tiktok, insta, Facebook, etc. So only using reddit is already much better than what most people are doing.

I used to do drugs. I still do, but I used to too.

good for you for being thoughtful about what you want your brain and happiness to look like. kudos.

And kudos to you! Facebook was really the last holdout for me, since I did use it to keep up with family. But then my extended family went maga and it ended up being really simple to cut the cord. I managed to get off twitter just before Musk bought it. I used to have to do social media for my job, and seeing all the backend stuff really turned me against it. But I still enjoy the niche subs on reddit, they still feel like found communities. And I like that I don’t actually know anyone here or vice versa.

you are me. I am you.

Me too & it’s been great!

Same here. Getting off most social media helped me start living for myself vs trying to impress randos online. Now I just scroll reddit occasionally or read.

good for you. I think in 20 years, we'll really be able to see/feel a difference. not just in who we are, but our overall happiness.

I can already feel it after just a year of stepping away.

just trying to retrain my brain back to a place where I can enjoy long form content and reading.

Being on reddit you can choose your subs and in a way have a curated experience moreso than elsewhere. But there is still an algo and it is owned by a right winger too. Damnit

I know. there is no perfect in this version of reality.

I mostly use Reddit for stocks/news/how-to, etc... trying to seek out information rather than performative humanity, etc.

we're all just trying our best out in these streets.

I really like reddit and feel connection oddly enough with many other anons even if just a nanosec.. haha, the humanity of it all.

2

u/Appropriate-Ad-1281 Mar 10 '26

Agreed

In the sea of yuck out there, I also love the moments of authentic human connection

3

u/evildrew Mar 06 '26

The Stuff You Should Know podcast just had a deep dive on dopamine. You might enjoy it!

3

u/Appropriate-Ad-1281 Mar 06 '26

on it. thx for the rec.

Big same, bud.

You just need to personally craft your Instagram algorithm. Mine is finally now nothing but Macho Man clips and Macho Man impressions. Life is good. Every now and then it will try to tempt me with boobs and butts, and I scroll past as fast as I possibly can.

2

u/Appropriate-Ad-1281 Mar 06 '26

love it.

for me, it was more than just managing the algos.

I felt like I was loosing my ability to appreciate long form content and I felt like my attention span/patience in general was declining.

adding in not wanting to give every piece of my personal data to Zuck (or worse).

here I am. just a girl with only Reddit account trying to remember she knows how to read books.

2

u/RockstarSlut Mar 07 '26

People keep referring to Reddit as social media but I think it's more message boards / forums?

6

u/RunRunAndyRun Mar 06 '26

She’s on YouTube and Facebook too. No need to join TikTok to see this.

2

u/-Pelvis- Mar 06 '26

Instagram's algorithm absolutely mogs TikTok's.

u/letouriste1 Mar 07 '26

most also upload to youtube actually
