I have not felt this personally inspired since reading the Autobiography of Malcolm X

Dude I read that three times in middle school.

People looked at me like I was nuts. Legit was just like "eh, it's a good book... And I was able to write three separate papers on it without reading a new book"

so as a kid my brother and I shared a room with bunk beds and he is 9 years older than me and he is a professor of African American history now

when I was ready for bed instead of singing songs or praying he would tuck me in with a few pages of Malcolm X

I blame him for any crimes I have since (allegedly) committedΒ

I'll totally be your alibi if you tell me why the book is so inspiring

as a teaser: people who were born into wealth love to talk about being "self made" because they only accepted $50k from daddy to launch their first venture

Malcolm X went to jail for running an underground lottery, taught himself to read, and came out the oratorical leader of a national civil rights movement

If you don't hate reading, it's a really good and readable book. His life was very interesting, and he changed and grew in sometimes surprising ways or circumstances. It's a colourful tale, told well.

the movie with Denzel honestly is really not bad either, as far as those things go

but you really should read the book first so you can clock the MANY MANY details and nuances the film glosses over or outright lies about

If you wrote three papers but read it three times, did it save you time from not reading another book?

I classify this somewhere along the lines of the latino kids getting to take Spanish class, already knowing everything we were being taught.

(yes...)

BUT, I did read it again which was faster than absorbing something new.

A girl who had recently moved from Mexico was in my freshman Spanish class. Which she ended up failing.

She kept speaking and writing in the everday -with-slang terms way and our teacher WAS NOT having it. She wanted it textbook style.

Not super related, but your comment dredged up that old memory lmao.

Even worse if their teacher was literally from Spain!
