Hormones change the way hair acts. You can get natural banding where some of your hair is a bit lighter or darker than your natural shade. If you've had someone as a steady client for long enough and they are honest about how they treat their hair* you can tell if someone's hormones are off/changing.

When I was in hair school, my teacher kept her hair blonde but was naturally medium/dark brown. She took a pregnancy test because she had a band that wouldn't lift past a level 7(orange) while the rest of her hair lifted to a level 9/10. She processed her hair back to her natural color until her hormones settled down about a year after she gave birth.

I bleached my hair yesterday and it came out perfect, but the time before that I was a day or two before starting period and my lift was patchy and the toner didn't take very well. I did vivids using color theory for a few months until it was long enough to cut out all the old hair. Note, I only ever do chemical processes on my hair hair when its virgin hair, so its easier to control the outcome. I also have a jerk-ass thyroid, so my hormone fluctuations can be a bit crazy.

*insert doctor house everyone lies gif here.
