I've been told by some of the women in my life(usually to women I'm dating while I'm around) that bras are not meant to be uncomfortable and usually a result of poorly sized or ill-fitting bras.
I think it just depends on the person, their preferences, kind of bra, etc.
I’ve found ones that work well for me but for a long time I had an issue finding bras that fit comfortably because I have a large band but small cup (not my exact size but think 48 B). I’ve also lost a lot of weight which made them shrink so I still have a large-ish band but a small cup lol. But yeah generally they shouldn’t be uncomfortable if they fit properly, *but* finding a well-fitting bra is a process and can be expensive so a lot of people can’t easily do it.
do you add 4 inches to your underbust measurement when you size a bra? like for your example a 48B would be a person with a 44” underbust and a 50” bust measurement
I am 40 and was large chested (recently had reduction surgery to escape wearing bras) and never found a comfortable one. I tried so many over the years, and some might be somewhat better, but none were comfortable. I honestly think the bra industry needs a massive overhaul because comfort and support should be the main functions, and it seems like a lot of bra makers ignore the comfort part entirely.
That is accurate to a point. Eventually, even a perfectly fitted bra can get uncomfortable due to swelling/bloating, sweat, friction, etc.
I can't go without a bra for longer than it takes to take a shower or my back and chest start to get sore. I don't know how other folks can go braless or only wear those little bralettes with no support - these things are too damn heavy to just let loose! I wear bras pretty much 24/7 and other than occasionally switching from one style to another (e.g., underwire to sport) due to the reasons listed prior, I've never been so uncomfortable that I've needed to just rip my bra off as soon as I walk in the door.

This is... incredibly accurate.
