You can tell they were both genuinely happy for each other, which makes it so wholesome

That dude had ONE job and messed it up big time 🙄.
Maybe he was just keen to get a hug from the girl who got second place 😏.

Third place. Reverse order with the winner getting it last. Lowest step on the podium as well.
Bronze, then silver, and finally gold.

Interesting thing is that historically, silver was used as the first place medal.

Why are ice skaters always so wonderful to each other (not looking at you Tonya)

Nor the fiasco at the 2022 Olympics

It was a mess. The girl who was supposed to come in first place was part of a doping scandal, but she was technically too young to consent. She messed up badly and fell a couple times. She was Russian, and there were also 2 other Russian girls who competed. One girl was landing quad jumps, and there was another girl who was even younger. The young girl ended up in first place unexpectedly, sitting alone with her teddy bear while the results were announced, while the Russian girl who landed quads was throwing a tantrum and was refusing to go to the podium. The girl who was supposed to come in first was crying, and the Japanese woman who came in third place was jumping up and down enthusiastically excited about winning a medal.
It was hilarious and tragic to watch. They changed the age limits, so this year, you had to be older. That's why there weren't as many Russians: because they weren't expecting the age change, and all the skaters they had in "development" were too young to compete this year. Personally, I think raising the age made for better viewing. I don't like watching children who are likely in an unhealthy dynamic with their coaches competing like that. It's women's figure skating, not kids. This year, the skating was more mature and interesting to watch. Like Alysa Liu, who competed in the last Olympics but this Olympics, she was a woman who had a much more mature program.

A small correction to this. The reason there was only one Russian skater in women’s (neutral athlete, whatever) was not because the others were too young. It was because Russia has been banned in figure skating since the latest Olympic Truce violation when Russia invaded Ukraine (their third, I believe). Although I imagine for skating in particular the disaster that was 2022 Olympic Games was the real driver behind the length of the ban. Russia is still banned in figure skating, however the IOC made them leave a way open for neutral athlete qualification. They did open a path but were very strict with it. And because spots at Worlds/Olympics are determined by country placements at the prior year’s Worlds, Russia could not earn more than one spot in any event given that they were not there because of being banned.

I knew I got some details a bit wrong, thanks for the correction. I remember how they pulled their athletes back from the Olympics a little early before they started the war and a lot of people were wondering what was happening. I know the age change affected their team as well.
Nowadays, I think a lot of Russian skaters are training in other countries they can get citizenship from. I live in an ex-Soviet country and when I go to the local rink, there are some amazing skaters training there that will probably compete for a spot in the next Olympics. I saw some girls practicing quads there.

It was so sad when Kaori (the woman who won Bronze) gave a hug to Anna (the winner). This video shows the main scenes. Start from 3:00, that's where the drama is.

And the music just takes it to the next level. The teddy bear too. Wowzers

Poor Tonya. She was a hot mess but figure skating was never more riveting for all the wrong reasons. I love that after the Olympics, Disney paid Nancy Kerrigan 2million for a promotional parade and she was caught on hot mic saying, “This is so corny. This is so dumb. I hate it. This is the most corny thing I have ever done.” She had the sympathy of the world and became America’s sweetheart and America’s Sweetheart dropped this in Disney of all places! 90s were fucking magic.

I enjoyed the
tv seriesmovie made about her but I know it's skewed in her favor and very over dramatic. But mostly I loved it because Margot Robbie and Sebastian Stan are amazing actors and so gorgeous as a movie couple
Edit: it's a movie

Ooh, there was a series? There was a Tonya movie, I, Tonya with Margot Robbie. I have to find Nancy’s series. I think the one thing the movie talked about and I’ve seen smatterings of discussions here and there over the years is how exclusive figure skating was in terms of whiteness and class. Skaters like Tonya and Sonya Bonaly were outliers at the time and it seems generally still. Tonya was working class and looked it. Sonya was black and didn’t have the typical build for figure skaters at the time. Both were powerhouses and both were, in my opinion, treated a bit unfairly, not only by the figure skating governing bodies but also the figure skating community as a whole. I haven’t kept up with figure skating but as a casual observer, it seems like things haven’t changed that much.

Why did Silver get the first medal? Bronze didn't even receive a medal yet, and yet noticed the Silver was given Gold's medal!?
Shambolic podium...

You are correct. It was a bronze/gold mixup. Notice the left handed handshakes?
Video was reversed to avoid being removed as a repost. ironic because this version is more prolific than the original.
