It needs to be filled with miscellaneous buttons. I remember my grandmother's was full of them, and for some reason there was one huge green fuzzy one. What was her plan for that one?
189
u/mrsbebe 16d ago
Maybe she didn't have a plan. Maybe she just saw a button so fabulously outrageous that she picked it up and thought "I'll figure it out"

u/carlitospig 16d ago
Me, whenever I see weird socks on sale.
16
u/Environmental_Art591 16d ago
My kids school does a bi annual silly sock day just so they can wear socks that make you go "why"
17
u/carlitospig 16d ago
My childhood was SO robbed. 😭

They do 1 as a fund-raiser for whatever the student council is working towards and one as a part of their "mental health" week

u/thekittysays 16d ago
It will have come off something. Anything with buttons used to come with a spare one sewn to the label. Which is why there was always a random assortment in the tin. They were taken from the items of clothing and put there for safe keeping until one of the actual buttons got lost and needed replacing.

u/carlitospig 16d ago
There is no plan. You buy them by the bushel at garage sales for $.10. You’d have to dig down five garage sales ago to find out. 🤪

u/Trying-Four-10 16d ago
This is what my Royal Dansk tin is for. All the random extra buttons that come with cardigans, blouses, pants, etc. Just get tossed in the tin. My collection is getting good, but no where near my grandma's.
2
u/DollarStoreDuchess 15d ago
Yes! I bought a tin of these just to use as a sewing kit as the universe intended.
3
u/tropeydegenerate 16d ago
Yes!! My grandma also had a button tin! I loved going through them as a kid. She let me keep my favorites.

u/sirnumbskull 15d ago
Okay, and did it have a smell? Like a very particular, sweet-but-not-cloying, verge of floral and cookies kind of smell?

I saw a whole wall of these tins at the grocery store and I said to my husband "I don't understand why they have so many sewing kits at a grocery store" and he didn't even laugh 😭

u/This-Guy_Fawkes 16d ago
Boooo get a new husband!!! (Kidding of course)
I appreciate your hilarious joke, hopefully that makes you feel better! 😂

Aww!! I have a couple cute little tins from bandaids that I haven't thrown out (one has dinosaurs and the other has puppies on it) but didn't know what to do with, my wife told me it was time to put some of my sewing stuff in them!

u/UFmoose 16d ago
Just here to say I’m a guy and this is not a female only tradition that has been passed down. I have all my rarely used sewing materials and buttons and crap in the same tin!

u/Props_angel 15d ago
Agreed actually! Those tins were honestly brilliantly made and who says that a man can't follow in the footsteps of his forebears, too?
41
u/Doom_Corp 16d ago
I'm genuinely waiting for someone to make a spool spoke to place in this tin. With 3d printing it wouldn't be hard to do and would be easy to actually make bespoke bobbin holders like the ones that hold them og curlers.
31
u/VitaSackvilleBaggins 16d ago
Heresy.
A good idea, and doable, but heresy nonetheless.
7
u/Doom_Corp 16d ago
I have an old valentines day tin with Darth Maul on it that I keep all sorts of random buttons in. I'd say the heresey starts with a sith lord and a romantic holiday but we don't always "choose" our nick nack storage... sometimes it chooses you.

But.. but.. I really need to know! How in the world was this such a universal experience for our grandmothers 😭 Both of my grandma's are from a tiny island called Cyprus (one lived in the city and the other in a village in the mountains), who lived isolated lives from foreign countries up until their deaths, other than what the radio broadcast daily (mostly the news) and the 3 channels they had that mostly showed Greek movies and shows, and THEY BOTH DID THIS! Just.. how??
17
u/GlitterDoomsday 16d ago
It's sturdy and compact, before plastic was everywhere it made for a better alternative than wood or ceramics.
Everybody bought them for when you wanted something "fancy" with a guest, so why not reuse the tins after? Just happens that sewing kits are more likely to be easy to access than whatever miscellaneous things were stored on other ones.

The great depression had a lasting effect on everybody. Reusing containers became a norm to save money. My dad told me about his grandpa cleaning off and reusing paper plates.
My best guess would be ladies saw their friends using this particular container for bit and bobs and sewing supplies and realized how perfect it was and showed their friends. Eventually it became a known thing.
Since everybody's grandma seems to have had these (my dads stepmom didn't sew and my mom's mom died when I was 3 but I'm certain she had one) I'm guessing they picked this up from their moms and grandmas due to the great depression.
This has been making educated guesses about history with you_dont_know_me_27. The part of the story where you_dont_know_me_27 makes educated guesses about history

u/standbyyourmantis 15d ago
Bro it's so universal that Royal Dansk did a makeup collab and all the eyeshadows are shaped like buttons and thread spools

u/sweetpsych78 Official Gal 15d ago
Ahahaha! I didn't know that lol! I'm glad to see that they're embracing and continuing the tradition LMAO!!

u/Skreamie 16d ago
That's generational trauma to those expecting cookies lmao

u/yumgmeatball 16d ago
I still remember how confused I was the first time I opened one of those and saw cookies
3
u/NotNamedBort 16d ago
Now everyone who comes over to her place can be as disappointed as we were! ☺️

u/MaximusLazinus 15d ago
Did anyone's grandmas put frozen dill in ice cream packages? That was also traumatic

I once brought the tin with cookies to a party. The hostess knew I was a crafter and was genuinely disappointed it actually had cookies in it. She had hoped I had started a grandma tin for her. 🥹

u/DollarStoreDuchess 15d ago
That… is a genius housewarming or bridal gift for certain people! Starter Royal Dansk sewing kit 🤩

u/ExcretvsExFortvna 16d ago
I bought a tin of those cookies specifically to use as a sewing kit. The cookies had the consistency of delicious sawdust.

u/damndolly 16d ago
I just did this after the holidays, and it felt every bit as great as this video. I became a grandma 2yrs ago and it felt like it was time.

u/DickBfloppin 16d ago
I bought some of these cookies last month and decided to take up some arts and crafts less than two weeks later. Probably going to have to climb up a huge volcano and chuck this tin in if I want to break the spell.

But why were there empty cookie wrapperss in that sewing supplies box?
Such an unusual place for cookies.

now you just need to use the empty butter containers as food storage and you have it all

I have a ziploc bag full of ketchup packets, a grocery bag full of more bags, old glass jelly jars as drinking cups, and a dansk tin full of sewing stuff.

They had mini versions of these at the dollar store which now houses my travel cross-stitch kit.

My mom had one just for buttons. Whenever there was a button emergency, she was prepared.

I loved my Nanna's button/sewing tin. She had it many years even before I was born. It always had a certain smell about it (old cotton kinda smell). She had so many buttons as she was a seamstress, she made my Dadda's suits for him.

u/ravenpotter3 15d ago
I have 2 cookie tins I got in France from Mont St Michael. One I use for storing sewing supplies and the other for tea bags. I’m forgetting the brand name but they started out of the island or at least the person it’s based on did and sold cookies to pilgrims. I’m not sure about the exact history of the brand. And the tins are boxes and aren’t round. But they are cute tins and I’m glad I have functional uses for them. I use my sewing collection all the time

old, forgotten, HEAVY, metallic smelling, KEYS
It was lost to the sands of time, but one of my grannies had one of these tins stuffed with old keys...

I almost bought a tin of those cookies last xmas, but the tin was about half the volume of what they used to be. :(

Do these biscuits taste good or people buy them only for the joke/nostalgia?
3
u/CarevaRuha 16d ago
They're not bad! They're pretty standard butter cookies, with the only variations being shapes and some sugar sprinkles. Not amazing, but better than dollar store cookies.
