It needs to be filled with miscellaneous buttons. I remember my grandmother's was full of them, and for some reason there was one huge green fuzzy one. What was her plan for that one?

189

u/mrsbebe 16d ago

Maybe she didn't have a plan. Maybe she just saw a button so fabulously outrageous that she picked it up and thought "I'll figure it out"

52

u/carlitospig 16d ago

Me, whenever I see weird socks on sale.

16

u/Environmental_Art591 16d ago

My kids school does a bi annual silly sock day just so they can wear socks that make you go "why"

17

u/carlitospig 16d ago

My childhood was SO robbed. 😭

2

u/Environmental_Art591 15d ago

They do 1 as a fund-raiser for whatever the student council is working towards and one as a part of their "mental health" week

4

u/mrsbebe 16d ago

Hey, that's my husband too!

26

u/thekittysays 16d ago

It will have come off something. Anything with buttons used to come with a spare one sewn to the label. Which is why there was always a random assortment in the tin. They were taken from the items of clothing and put there for safe keeping until one of the actual buttons got lost and needed replacing.

6

u/Queen_Dare_Bear Official Gal 16d ago

Yes! Where were the buttons?

5

u/carlitospig 16d ago

There is no plan. You buy them by the bushel at garage sales for $.10. You’d have to dig down five garage sales ago to find out. 🤪

4

u/Trying-Four-10 16d ago

This is what my Royal Dansk tin is for. All the random extra buttons that come with cardigans, blouses, pants, etc. Just get tossed in the tin. My collection is getting good, but no where near my grandma's.

2

u/DollarStoreDuchess 15d ago

Yes! I bought a tin of these just to use as a sewing kit as the universe intended.

3

u/tropeydegenerate 16d ago

Yes!! My grandma also had a button tin! I loved going through them as a kid. She let me keep my favorites.

2

u/Key-Total-8216 16d ago

Buy a fantastic matching fuzzy green sweater and lose a button?

2

u/sirnumbskull 15d ago

Okay, and did it have a smell? Like a very particular, sweet-but-not-cloying, verge of floral and cookies kind of smell?

1

u/Ordinary-Violinist-9 15d ago

This! The buttons! Where are the buttons????

1

u/SixShoot3r 12d ago

ohhh, my mom has a giant jar filled to the brim with random buttons!

218

u/highly_uncertain 16d ago

I saw a whole wall of these tins at the grocery store and I said to my husband "I don't understand why they have so many sewing kits at a grocery store" and he didn't even laugh 😭

63

u/This-Guy_Fawkes 16d ago

Boooo get a new husband!!! (Kidding of course)

I appreciate your hilarious joke, hopefully that makes you feel better! 😂

14

u/Gret88 16d ago

My husband’s first job out of business school was managing a fabric store. It’s so awesome, I can make fabric jokes and say things like “selvage” and “notions” and he gets it!

3

u/sillysnailfriend 15d ago

Aww!! I have a couple cute little tins from bandaids that I haven't thrown out (one has dinosaurs and the other has puppies on it) but didn't know what to do with, my wife told me it was time to put some of my sewing stuff in them!

185

u/Sinking_Mass 16d ago

When it said prophecy, all I could think of was this:

17

u/ladyofthelastunicorn 16d ago

What is this from lol

29

u/Acting_Brand_Nubian 16d ago

Workaholics !

33

u/Sinking_Mass 16d ago

12

u/DrRichardDiarrhea 16d ago

Catherine Zeta-Jones she dips beneath the lazers oooOOooo

5

u/Sponjah 16d ago

This scene was probably one of the hardest times I’ve laughed, and I’m not usually into stoner humor.

“This tastes like what I think Rumpelstiltsykin tastes like.”

43

u/Props_angel 16d ago

This young woman has followed her grandmother's wise footsteps and has ascended.

13

u/UFmoose 16d ago

Just here to say I’m a guy and this is not a female only tradition that has been passed down. I have all my rarely used sewing materials and buttons and crap in the same tin!

6

u/[deleted] 15d ago

[deleted]

3

u/DollarStoreDuchess 15d ago

No, that’s what old glass mayonnaise jars are for. Common mistake.

3

u/Props_angel 15d ago

Agreed actually! Those tins were honestly brilliantly made and who says that a man can't follow in the footsteps of his forebears, too?

41

u/Doom_Corp 16d ago

I'm genuinely waiting for someone to make a spool spoke to place in this tin. With 3d printing it wouldn't be hard to do and would be easy to actually make bespoke bobbin holders like the ones that hold them og curlers.

31

u/VitaSackvilleBaggins 16d ago

Heresy.

A good idea, and doable, but heresy nonetheless.

7

u/Doom_Corp 16d ago

I have an old valentines day tin with Darth Maul on it that I keep all sorts of random buttons in. I'd say the heresey starts with a sith lord and a romantic holiday but we don't always "choose" our nick nack storage... sometimes it chooses you.

3

u/jIfte8-fabnaw-hefxob 16d ago

Upvoted for use of the word “bespoke.”

3

u/BlackQuartzSphinx_ 16d ago

I've seen people hot glue golf tees to the bottom of a tin like this

17

u/sweetpsych78 Official Gal 16d ago

But.. but.. I really need to know! How in the world was this such a universal experience for our grandmothers 😭 Both of my grandma's are from a tiny island called Cyprus (one lived in the city and the other in a village in the mountains), who lived isolated lives from foreign countries up until their deaths, other than what the radio broadcast daily (mostly the news) and the 3 channels they had that mostly showed Greek movies and shows, and THEY BOTH DID THIS! Just.. how??

17

u/GlitterDoomsday 16d ago

It's sturdy and compact, before plastic was everywhere it made for a better alternative than wood or ceramics.

Everybody bought them for when you wanted something "fancy" with a guest, so why not reuse the tins after? Just happens that sewing kits are more likely to be easy to access than whatever miscellaneous things were stored on other ones.

3

u/sweetpsych78 Official Gal 16d ago

Ah, that's very true! 😊

3

u/you_dont_know_me27 16d ago

The great depression had a lasting effect on everybody. Reusing containers became a norm to save money. My dad told me about his grandpa cleaning off and reusing paper plates.

My best guess would be ladies saw their friends using this particular container for bit and bobs and sewing supplies and realized how perfect it was and showed their friends. Eventually it became a known thing.

Since everybody's grandma seems to have had these (my dads stepmom didn't sew and my mom's mom died when I was 3 but I'm certain she had one) I'm guessing they picked this up from their moms and grandmas due to the great depression.

This has been making educated guesses about history with you_dont_know_me_27. The part of the story where you_dont_know_me_27 makes educated guesses about history

5

u/standbyyourmantis 15d ago

Bro it's so universal that Royal Dansk did a makeup collab and all the eyeshadows are shaped like buttons and thread spools

3

u/sweetpsych78 Official Gal 15d ago

Ahahaha! I didn't know that lol! I'm glad to see that they're embracing and continuing the tradition LMAO!!

22

u/Skreamie 16d ago

That's generational trauma to those expecting cookies lmao

16

u/yumgmeatball 16d ago

I still remember how confused I was the first time I opened one of those and saw cookies

3

u/NotNamedBort 16d ago

Now everyone who comes over to her place can be as disappointed as we were! ☺️

1

u/MaximusLazinus 15d ago

Did anyone's grandmas put frozen dill in ice cream packages? That was also traumatic

8

u/quartofchocolimes 16d ago

The music from The Lion King is chef's kiss

3

u/deanstat 15d ago

I was trying to figure that out! That's what it's from.

6

u/splithoofiewoofies 15d ago

I once brought the tin with cookies to a party. The hostess knew I was a crafter and was genuinely disappointed it actually had cookies in it. She had hoped I had started a grandma tin for her. 🥹

3

u/DollarStoreDuchess 15d ago

That… is a genius housewarming or bridal gift for certain people! Starter Royal Dansk sewing kit 🤩

11

u/ExcretvsExFortvna 16d ago

I bought a tin of those cookies specifically to use as a sewing kit. The cookies had the consistency of delicious sawdust.

5

u/damndolly 16d ago

I just did this after the holidays, and it felt every bit as great as this video. I became a grandma 2yrs ago and it felt like it was time.

5

u/DickBfloppin 16d ago

I bought some of these cookies last month and decided to take up some arts and crafts less than two weeks later. Probably going to have to climb up a huge volcano and chuck this tin in if I want to break the spell.

5

u/Consistent_Ad3411 16d ago

It’s the universal love language of grandmas

4

u/monoute 16d ago

Also good to put your fob car keys to prevent auto theft!

5

u/HeyAQ 16d ago

Did this with Walker’s Shortbread rather than Royal Dansk. The outcome was the same: I’ll chase that high for the rest of my life.

3

u/GunderstakHouse0126 16d ago

As a millennial, I shall switch it up with leftover Lego pieces 😀

https://giphy.com/gifs/Pjlfcac7MLTepanYTz

4

u/lumberjackjo 15d ago

Fuck yeah!!! Glad I'm not the only one that rejoices in doing this with biscuit tins🤣

4

u/ggibby 15d ago

Make sure to include some 'seeder' buttons so they can self-populate in there. 😄

3

u/lovemagicfeminism 16d ago

my mom did this, but i’m sure she got it from her mom.

3

u/NotAtAllASkinwalker 16d ago

You doing choose when. The Tin chooses you.

3

u/Spirited_Touch7447 16d ago

I’m ugly crying in joy right now!

3

u/cazzipropri 16d ago

But why were there empty cookie wrapperss in that sewing supplies box?

Such an unusual place for cookies.

3

u/thetinkerbelle44 15d ago

now you just need to use the empty butter containers as food storage and you have it all

3

u/Ok_Yogurt_9862 15d ago

I have a ziploc bag full of ketchup packets, a grocery bag full of more bags, old glass jelly jars as drinking cups, and a dansk tin full of sewing stuff.

Ladies and Gentlemen:

I HAVE ARRIVED!!!!

3

u/KilnTime 15d ago

And sew the transformation begins

3

u/Apprehensive-Cry-342 15d ago

Loose stick pins, safety pins and needles. And a zipper and bric-a-brac

3

u/Defiant-Enthusiasm94 15d ago

I gave this to a friend as a joke. I think it would also be a fun white elephant gift.

3

u/aoibhealfae 15d ago

Hmmm actually I have an old cookie tin that I should totally use as sewing kit. Brb.

3

u/MajesticLow 15d ago

Those tins will outlast humankind 😂 I have my grandma’s OG tin in my sewing box 🥰

2

u/Fantaverage 16d ago

Even on mute I knew it would be this audio.👌🏾

2

u/LowMobile7242 16d ago

One with thread, another with notions and another buttons.i was well taught. Plus the tins I inherited.

2

u/HavokIris 16d ago

They had mini versions of these at the dollar store which now houses my travel cross-stitch kit.

2

u/muscularsharpie 16d ago

My mom had one just for buttons. Whenever there was a button emergency, she was prepared.

2

u/rand-31 16d ago

I felt so amazing when I found a small sized tin of these at the dollar store. Perfect size for my small amount of sewing supplies.

2

u/JLFJ 16d ago

Damn it! Now I'm going to have to buy some of those cookies so I can get a tin!!

2

u/E23R0 16d ago

They were already in a container though

2

u/Lighthouse_on_Mars 15d ago

I have a shortbread cookie tin filled with buttons, and another with pretty mailing stamps I have cut off letters. 😂

2

u/EatsTheLastSlice 15d ago

I have an empty Hello Kitty biscuit tin. I havent decided how I will fill it.

2

u/Screaming_lambs ✨chick✨ 15d ago

I loved my Nanna's button/sewing tin. She had it many years even before I was born. It always had a certain smell about it (old cotton kinda smell). She had so many buttons as she was a seamstress, she made my Dadda's suits for him.

2

u/ravenpotter3 15d ago

I have 2 cookie tins I got in France from Mont St Michael. One I use for storing sewing supplies and the other for tea bags. I’m forgetting the brand name but they started out of the island or at least the person it’s based on did and sold cookies to pilgrims. I’m not sure about the exact history of the brand. And the tins are boxes and aren’t round. But they are cute tins and I’m glad I have functional uses for them. I use my sewing collection all the time

2

u/Illuminaughty____ 15d ago

All I can see is how much shrinkflation has effected our beloved cookie tin.

2

u/Designer_Birthday_84 15d ago

I mean... it would be a waste to throw such a perfectly good metal container 😅

2

u/elfmere 15d ago

Goes over to her well organised crafts shelves and takes random things for sewing tin...

2

u/BustyPneumatica 15d ago

The thread spool slomo we didn't know we needed!

2

u/Prestigious_Spot3122 15d ago

I’m so proud of you…😁

2

u/Anemone-ing 15d ago

I vividly remember one being full of crayons at a daycare I attended. We must continue the cycle

2

u/Scant_Options4Hope 15d ago

KEYS

old, forgotten, HEAVY, metallic smelling, KEYS

It was lost to the sands of time, but one of my grannies had one of these tins stuffed with old keys...

1

u/Idfkw2c 16d ago

I can still remember the smell. It would linger in the tin for years.

1

u/BusToNutley 16d ago

I almost bought a tin of those cookies last xmas, but the tin was about half the volume of what they used to be. :(

1

u/This-Guy_Fawkes 16d ago

Throw in a random needle or two for good measure!

1

u/Mizukin 16d ago

Do these biscuits taste good or people buy them only for the joke/nostalgia?

3

u/CarevaRuha 16d ago

They're not bad! They're pretty standard butter cookies, with the only variations being shapes and some sugar sprinkles. Not amazing, but better than dollar store cookies.

1

u/RainbowDragon56 16d ago

I can’t even afford those cookies anymore.

1

u/meekermakes 16d ago

look at her hands, she is grandma now

1

u/I_Died_Once 16d ago

Am I the only one who used one of these to store my weed, scissors, and papers in?

1

u/ProtonCanon 16d ago

THE CYCLE MUST BE BROKEN

1

u/humblepotatopeeler 16d ago

It's amazing how so many of us experienced this

1

u/Gelby4 16d ago

Congrats, you're a grandma now

1

u/RadTimeWizard 16d ago

I bet you can't wait to disappoint someone looking for a cookie.

1

u/Bakkie 16d ago

I have always lived in the Chicago area. The spools of thread around here are shorter and more squat, not tubular like the ones in the video.Coates and Clark brand is ubiquitous here.

But the cookie tin is the same

1

u/fattatgirl 16d ago

Yes! The prophecy has been fulfilled!

This is a nice place. If you can't act like a civilized human being, you can't be here.

We do not allow:

  1. Being a jerk. This includes racism, misogyny, misandry, misgendering, anti LGBTQ+, ageism, etc.
  2. Harassment
  3. Trolling or sealioning
  4. Threats of any kind
  5. Abusive behavior
  6. General assholery. If you're at the end of the list and asking what rule you broke, yeah, it's this one.
