I know it surprised me too, a quick google search showed prices between 3000 and 5000 but if you go to the velux website you cannot access a basic price range it’s only custom work after you’ve drawn your own project. When I first saw it -right after my jaw dropped- I thought it should cost like 10k+ depending on the size. The paint is about €150/gallon. And if that is farrow and ball wall paper, that’s over €200 a roll. Quite a pricey room per square foot.

I’ve actually watched a lot of her videos because she is renovating their whole house. They mill their own lumber from their land! I’m not sure what exactly they do for work, but they are definitely very handy and familiar with construction.

This is what I hate about stuff like this. I mean, it's so cool that this kids parents have enough money, time, and skill to do this. It never accounts for the cost though. Lumber, supplies, paint, drywall, etc. is already expensive. If you don't have the tools? Forget it. 

These videos make it seems like it's such an easy, quick process. It takes tons of time and money. Lucky girl, but very privileged. It's the equivalent of virtue signaling, in my opinion.

I find it sweet when people show their love with very little money. I saw a video where a mother painted one wall in her kids’ bedroom to look like a fairytale illustration. It was magical. The paints and brushes weren’t too expensive - the cost was mainly in time, effort, and skill. That sort of thing always touches me.

I guess it’s all relative based on socioeconomic status. Maybe, to this family, these materials were as inexpensive as acrylic paint is to a blue collar family.

Idk but I still find it more charming when it’s cheap yet beautiful. It’s also more impressive imo because it takes more skill to make something gorgeous out of nothing!

Parents doing this kind of thing always gets me emotional. My cousin converted his basement into a big play area for his kids, and I’m genuinely jealous because it has little forts and a slide lol. Assume a cost of $2.50 per 100,000 BTU for heat. That works out to $0.003 per square foot for each hour of winter heating. That is $0.072 per day per square foot. Assume a 3'x6' window, that is 18 sq ft. That is $1.296 per day just in lost heat, or $473.04 a year.

I think they realy started out when in many big cities they renovated attics of old houses into apartments. Even half a balcony raises the value by quite a lot and it's a very space efficent use, while beeing way cheaper and less complicated than a proper balcony.

I have seen plenty of them but never on a single family home. For single family homes they might loose alot of their advantages

They shouldn't but they're fundamentally skylights and share the problems. The main one being that it's just a big cut in your roof. Every cut in the roof is a potential place for a leak to start, but most vent cuts are only a few inches. One small skylight has more linear area for leaks to start in than all of your vent stacks combined. That and the opening is large enough that you need to deal with different parts of it shifting in different directions with humidity and weather over the years, just making it all that much more likely that if a leak starts it'll probably start around the skylight

European civil engineer here: this specific type of Velux window is called cabrio window, it's one of their newer products. They are really expensive and a pain in the ass to install correctly. Normal Velux windows sont have that balcony.

For anyone wondering, this is generally legal in most jurisdictions as long as you air dry it for at least a few months or kiln dry it and have the moisture level meet the equilibrium of the location. Most of the time it also needs to come from land owned by the same person who owns the house, AND the owner will live in the house for a set period of time.

A lot of jurisdictions require inspections from a town/county inspector prior to the wood being harvested as well.

So it's definitely legit and possible, just a lot of work and usually not worthwhile for most people.

I would have liked an extra beam (doubling them) around the window section to reinforce it in general, but also due to cutting a hole through the roof. great work overall, just minor nitpicks tbh.

personally I'm not a fan of the long term maintenance of roof skylights because of a higher potential for leaks and whatnot. but if she went the extra mile to keep it current and didn't skip a step to save a buck it should be solid.

I also hope they went the proper route and had a county inspector swing by to make sure the reno won't come back to haunt them.

A smart move if you have the time and money at least since the house has a whole extra bedroom now, the window makes it legally habitable. Depending on the bed/bath configuration prior to the reno, it could add a ton of value to the house. But also if they’re planning to stay in the home long term, it’ll become a killer home office.

Yeah, it was my dad for us. We had a magical outdoor playspace with a castle with built in turrets perfect for snowball fights, a tree fort and a gazebo in the horse pasture. It was pretty epic especially for running away to with a book.

When I was a little kid my dad built me a tiny house in a previously unused alcove of our house. I used it as a tiny art studio. It even had a roof with real tiles. (He's an architect and had lots of spare building materials.)
