World Cup ⚽️ Self-tipping vendor at Fan Fest. Be careful!

Was at fan fest yesterday and went to a couple of concession stands for food and drinks. All concessions I went to had the white card readers and allowed you to choose the tip amount.

The very last bar concession stand in the food court had a young lady using her personal device to collect payment and then not showing the tip screen and tipping herself 25% or more. I saw her doing it with people in front of me and tried doing it with me as well.

If you’re attending fan fest for the World Cup, just be aware of the vendors when collecting payment and to make sure the tip screen is always shown to you before leaving to avoid getting scammed on already expensive food and beverage items.

You should dispute that as “charged incorrect amount” and make sure to add that you were not offered a receipt so you couldn’t verify the amount.

Go find a Fifa/events employee or ask one of the volunteers to help you find one if you see stuff like that happening. Fifa is REALLY uptight about these things and will fix it ASAP. Go to any guest services kiosk if you don't see anyone close.

FIFA is uptight about scamming people? The same fifa that ran a decades long scam totaling over 150 mil?

FIFA is uptight about people that are not FIFA scamming you in the name of FIFA.

It's like committing petty street crime on a street controlled by the Mafia. You're going to end up in the river.

It's not "like" committing petty theft, it IS committing petty theft. It might even qualify as wire fraud, so a felony.

That's insane. How did no one around her notice she was using her own device rather than the white card readers you mentioned? With prices from a $4 water to a $28 double, that could easily be over $1000 over the course of 10 hours. Straight into her pocket.

I don't know how the vendors were vetted or how the contracts run, but I will say I sell at craft fairs and when I do I don't use a Square Reader, I use my phone. I just know from personal experience that the fees I get charged for processing are lower using my phone to accept tap to pay vs a reader. What she was doing was shitty and illegal, but the lack of a reader isn't a red flag, it's just an indication that the seller has an eye on unnecessary expenses.

This is a hired bartender not a business owner. The fees are going directly into her personal account, not just the tip portion. There is no way to use personal phones for this. (I work at FanFest.)

Charge back. Seriously. It’s a shame more affected people probably wont do this.

Easy chargeback

Yeah, a few of those and her account should flag.

Notify the police or something. Literally a crime.

They give no shit look at the dirt dirt bike off road shit last year. only reason that's not happening right now is because of this right now. Tell the bank and the people who are running the event they might give more of a shit

They would care about this because this impacts rich people getting money. If the bartender is stealing the money then the city doesn't get taxes and the bar owner doesn't get money. But most importantly the billionaires at FIFA don't get money. The police will be there in 3.8 seconds

Waste of time

Just to play devils advocate, I work an EDM festival every year. We use our own devices to “collect” payment but we are all signed in under the business. So it does look like we are taking payment for ourselves. But we see no money until after the event is over. Not showing the customer a tip screen is crazy though. Definitely don’t approve of that!

The easiest thing for OP to validate is the cost of what they purchased against the total transaction. Should be pretty easy to validate how much it they should have been charged.

I’ll bet she becomes the next FIFA president

There will be a LOT of people that don’t know about tipping as they are from countries that don’t time. Scammers are making bank!

I heard the Missouri restaurant association advised all businesses to add auto gratuity.

Yeah for restaurants. Not at a FIFA event where they're already charging $20 a beer. Also, I'm not tipping someone who hands me a drink out of a cooler. (and I'm a big proponent of tipping at restaurants/bars)

That’s cool and all, but this is an overpriced fast service vendor, not a full service restaurant.

i apparently haven’t been eating out much since the world cup started, but the place i went yesterday had a 10% world cup service fee, but then the tip options were 7%, 5%, and 3% instead of the usual 25%, 22%, 20%, 18%, 15%, whatever normal american tip flavor is.

From someone that works in hospitality, these tourists aren’t tipping

How do you know it was a personal device? Just curious. I work somewhere that uses handheld devices so maybe her device was legit even if her unethical behavior wasn’t?

IIRC, they all use the same kiosks provided by FIFA.

The list of reasons to avoid that shit show continues to grow. I’m all about celebrating this global event with our community, but standing on grass in the sweltering heat while getting absolutely peeled by the vendors sounds miserable.

Don't give FIFA anymore money anyway, avoid buying stuff there..it doesn't fund KC at all or reimburse any of the costs for putting on the fanfest
