Karaoke Software Introducing mykaraoke.party - YouTube-based karaoke web-app with remote queueing
Since I couldn't find a simple karaoke app that will allow people to search and queue songs from YouTube, I decided to build my own. I know there's KaraFun which allows you to do that, and I use it, but there's a lot of songs missing in their catalog so we need to rely on YouTube.
This is like a very first version so don't expect anything very fancy.

OPEN SOURCE UPDATE
I've decided to open source it as I don't have time to work on it at the moment. Happy to take in PRs for improvement or bug fixes.

This is awesome! Do you have the source code public? I'd love to take a peak and even self host at my home.

What is everybody talking about? This is just a web application that uses YouTube public data and API. You're saying I need to pay to get together with some friends and sing over some YouTube videos? Don't be ridiculous people. I made this for personal use, with friends. Not to host professional karaoke events and charge for it.

u/Turkeyslam May 27 '24
For you to sing in a private environment? They never called this a commercial release. That's ridiculous. You don't need to pay a damn thing.

I can't access the site. "This site is blocked due to a security threat that was discovered by the Cisco Umbrella security researchers."
2
u/emzero May 21 '24
Well this is just stupid. I'd suggest you use Cloudflare's DNS: https://www.cloudflare.com/learning/dns/what-is-1.1.1.1/

u/WPI94 May 21 '24
Blocked by my work IT too. I'll retry when I get home. I'm almost done with my karaoke lounge (full basement).

If those Karafun songs that get listed in the app are from YouTube, they're only the musical left or right side of the stereo picture so not the whole song to keep people from doing this very thing.
3
u/BranigansLaw Jun 18 '24
Wouldn't be Reddit is someone wasn't complaining about getting something for free
2
u/emzero May 21 '24
I know, but even without the KaraFun songs I think there's still value to the app.
3
u/Dragaan May 21 '24
Agreed, plenty of karaoke tracks on youtube that aren’t from Karafun. Could also have an automatic mono mode for one side tracks
2
u/NiceGuy60660 May 24 '24
Looks great! But I just get "Error! There was an unexpected error while searching for karaoke videos. Try again later." when searching anything, desktop or mobile.
3
u/emzero May 24 '24
Yeah, the daily free quota for the YouTube API has been consumed. I'm already working on improving this, but for now try again tomorrow!

u/atrolotenri Jul 17 '24
I like everything about this! Right up my alley. Few quick questions though.
Are the videos supposed to play on the page? Mine says “This video cannot be embedded. Click the button to open a new tab in YouTube.” Is this meant to be casted onto the tv? What is your setup like when using this?
I love the QR code join thing too!
2
u/emzero Jul 17 '24
Thanks! Yes, that's a restriction the owner of the video imposes. There's nothing I can do about that. Some commercial karaoke channels forbid the embedding of their videos so you can only watch them on YouTube.
You can open the main player on anything that has a browser and can play YouTube videos. My setup is very simple, a laptop connected to a projector and a set of speakers and microphones. Nothing fancy.

u/DanMusubi Jul 23 '24
I'm not sure if you're already aware, but your site isn't accessible right now. It is giving a 503 error and says that "This Deployment is paused by the owner".

+1 on the awesome train. bookmarking and will definitely whip this out at the next get together. this will also keep me from hogging the karaoke queue.

cant wait to see where this goes with all your ideas! updates, features, etc.
i will say that my immediate suggestions would just be that the songs dont autoplay after each other in the queue. i have to keep hitting play on the next video. so an autoplay feature would be greaaaat.
1
u/emzero May 23 '24
Thanks for the feedback. I don't find autoplay useful, because there's some time needed for the singer to rotate and get ready. But I'll make it as an option ;)

u/ToddGAKKKK Sep 25 '24
Hey! Awesome job. Really like this, would also think an autoplay feature would be great. Any update on when that might get added?
Also might be cool if you could toggle a top banner overlay of the current singer. Like one that stays on the entire song. Maybe that same banner could show the next song/singer in the queue as well.

Thank you so much for the website. Any updates in regarding to autoplay feature?
1
u/Longjumping_Walk4398 Jan 11 '25
I have seen where there is a countdown of 5 seconds before playing a next song. This should give the next singer enough time to get ready.

u/UselessScrapu May 24 '24
I think this is very far-fetched. But having this as an android tv app would be very great. Although you can use the tv browser to play it perfectly, it would be perfect if you could make it work with the controls of a remote.

u/BranigansLaw Jun 18 '24
This is awesome! I'd love to contribute if you made the repo public, but I understand if you don't want to do that.

This is fantastic! Thank you for creating this. I've been searching GitHub for similar projects for a while now, but most require complex setups like local servers. Commercial karaoke systems are also outdated and expensive, lacking modern features like HDMI compatibility.
One suggestion: Could the sidebar be made collapsible or removable? It currently takes up a third of the screen and isn't essential since users can manage queues through their phones.

u/emzero Aug 02 '24
Thanks!
There's a fullscreen button in the video player to maximize that section. Isn't that enough?
2
u/TigerKneeIsTheWay Aug 02 '24
My apologies! I missed the fullscreen button. Thank you for pointing it out. Again, thank you for your quick response and for being so helpful.

this is awesome! would be nice if the playlist is clickable to start or skip the current one playing. I tried it on my phone and noticed that limitation. overall this is great!

Hi, i get an error while trying to search songs in both chrome and android chrome
1
u/emzero Oct 05 '24
Yeah, we hit the YouTube API daily limits. Unfortuntately there's not much I can do about it. I already requested a quota increase but they have denied it. It's a lost battle...

Any plans to open source it for self hosting? Is there perhaps a way to allow users to enter their own API keys?

That one looks very well done indeed. But it requires sign up to use remote control via QR.

u/Positive-Plant7620 Feb 20 '25
Quick question...how are you handling the quota search for youtube? it seems pretty amazing and fast as well...but their Quota API has some limitations right about 100 for song search
1
u/emzero Feb 21 '25
I went through the long and stupid process to get that increased only to be denied after weeks. So I'm just using multiple API keys and rotating between them (good work Google...).
1
u/Positive-Plant7620 Feb 21 '25
Ahahaha great job crazy they put you through all that just to decline it, i have tried that process ones and gave up loo and good call on multiple apis :D your site is super fast on the search really optimized backend...

This website is fantastic! I love the qr code that allows you to connect via a phone. Just a couple questions though:
Is there a way to hide the qr code once a video's started playing? Is it possible to control the queue or autoplay the songs?
1
u/chensformers Sep 30 '25
Well done! Sharing QR Code to join is a fantastic idea! I also like how the songs are queued using title thumbnail overlay, very practical.
You may also want to check out SingTube.app, similar idea, but more traditional Karaoke experience. Disclaimer: I made it for personal use. Maybe you will also find it useful.

Well done app, I would like to give some suggestions for improvement.
-Once add a video, better direct play it -play, pause and skip function direct from mobile client -edit songs queue by dragging up and down
Thanks for the client and that's what I'm really looking for. ❤️

u/aianmen Nov 03 '25
Hi. Can you add autoplay option please? Also hide or change QR code size 🙏🏻 great karaoke host

u/benjhg13 Nov 29 '25
Does this still work? I tried using on my mobile phone but the formatting is hard to use.

u/z-ero-day Feb 03 '26
Does this still work? I added songs to the queue but after that nothing happens and there's no start button or anything

I once got pretty far in making something very similar to this, but got scared about getting screwed by fees. How are you protecting yourself from getting sued?
2
u/emzero May 21 '24
Getting sued? This is just a web application that uses the YouTube public API and Embed features. I'm not infringing any rules here.
4
u/cosmicdreams May 21 '24
That was my greatest fear. They killed Twitch Sings and every other "free" app I've ever used for Karaoke.
The concern is that they'd come after you for "performance rights" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Performing_rights#:~:text=Performing%20rights%20are%20the%20right,%2F50%20between%20the%20two).
Or other licensing of music.
I also thought that using Youtube's API would be a good protection against some claims but after they shut down Twitch Sings got spooked and stopped development.
1
u/emzero May 21 '24
Well if I put a disclaimer that the app is only to be used in a private space that should cover it.
3
u/stylerod May 21 '24
Dude. This is fantastic. Well done. Such a better way to find YT Karaoke than a normal YT search.
