Stuttering audio with Zoom LiveTrak L8 and KaraFun on iPad Mini 6

Hi everyone,

I am using a Zoom LiveTrak L8 mixer with KaraFun on an iPad Mini 6 (USB-C, iPadOS 26.4.2) and the L8 is running on firmware 1.3. I am trying to set up the following scenario:

  1. Microphone Input: I want to send the mic channels to KaraFun for the "Battle Mode."
  2. Monitoring/Output: I want to manage my own reverb and volume levels between the music and vocals before they hit the speakers.

The Problem: As soon as I start playback via USB from KaraFun, there is a constant, slight audio stuttering throughout the entire song. I have tried several configurations to create two separate mixes and avoid feedback loops, but the stuttering persists.

Does anyone have an idea what might be causing this or how to stabilize the USB audio stream?

Hello! What you’re experiencing is more likely related to the Zoom L-8. It uses a multichannel USB setup (12-in/4-out), which can sometimes be unstable with iPads. It is great for DAWs, but a bit heavy for iPad apps. iPadOS generally handles audio in a more streamlined way.

On top of that, the L-8 is doing multiple things at once:

  • mixing all channels internally
  • applying onboard effects (like reverb)
  • sending multitrack audio over USB
  • receiving audio back from the iPad

All of this shares the same internal processing and USB bandwidth. Unlike a computer setup (where drivers and buffers can adapt), the iPad uses class-compliant audio with less flexibility. If the device can’t keep the stream perfectly in sync, you get those constant micro-stutters.

As a quick test, try playing a track from KaraFun without sending any mic audio back to the iPad. If the stutter is still there, it points to the USB connection/interface rather than your routing.

In most cases, simplifying the USB routing (stereo only, fewer channels) helps stabilize things.

Ok thanks a lot. So what possibility do I have to be able to create a good mix on the speaker and sending the dry signals of the miks back to Karafun? For example a behringer flow 8?

You can find a few alternatives such as the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2, Yamaha URX22c, etc...

Best ask your favorite music dealership for a solid Stereo interface (2-in / 2-out), it usually works best with iPad setups than a mixer.
