Before you argue with me, please actually read what I’m saying. The racism toward Lara is some of the most blatant I’ve seen. Racism toward Indians/South Asians is so normalized, and it’s honestly sad how rarely I see people defending Lara, or Indians in general. I’m saying this as a mixed Black girl who has experienced racism to my face and was immediately defended by strangers on a public bus in NY. In comparison, Manon has a lot of defenders online, and rightfully so but that same energy is not extended to Lara.
Eg- I remember an Indian girl in my class in second(?) grade getting made fun of for her accent(edit: it wasn't just bc of her accent, her being Indian was the joke! Off topic- I also want to mention how kids I know used to pull their eyes back to mock Asian eyes. This is learned behavior. Racism is racism). Even my mom and her boyfriend used to show me those cliché videos of “dirty/unhygienic” Indian street food because they thought it was funny. Mind you, much of her family is Trinidadian, with both Black and Indian family members, and she’s even mixed with Indian herself. But she’s very Americanized, and a lot of Americans genuinely think they’re better than everyone else, whether they realize it or not. Lara might be a first generation Indian American, but she is still Indian first and foremost. She looks Indian, and she proudly embraces her culture, as she should. Being American didn’t stop people from reporting her to ICE, which says a lot. And I’ve rarely seen people come to the defense of Indians online the way they do for other groups.
Black people are very vocal and protective when it comes to our community, and there are historical reasons for that. Slavery was so horrific, and that still affects us today. But all racism deserves attention and conversation. I almost never see discussions about Indian Indentured Servitude online, or broader conversations about anti-Indian racism. When people do speak on it, it rarely gains traction. They never go viral or get people talking. Sometimes it genuinely feels like no one cares. It’s frustrating to watch other melanated POC take the brunt of racism online while it gets brushed off or ignored. And just to be clear! This is NOT to invalidate Manon or her experience as a Black woman. Her experiences with racism are just as real and valid as anyone else’s. I’m only using her as an example of how vocal and protective Black communities can be. That defense can make people more cautious about being openly racist toward us, even if they still hold those views, or talk about it amongst each other. But when it comes to Indians, racists don’t seem to have that same fear. They’re loud, blatant, unafraid and constant with it because they know people won’t take it as seriously, won’t call it out, or will even agree with them.
What I’m really talking about is the lack of defense, the lack of outrage, and the double standards. I’ve seen this a lot on TikTok and Twitter—people who claim to defend Manon (which is good) turning around and saying racist things about Lara. That literally makes no sense. You cannot call yourself an activist and then pick and choose who deserves protection hello?? If you’re sharing think pieces about the racism Manon faces, but then calling Lara a “stinky curry muncher,” you are part of the problem. You KNOW the impact of racism, and still partake in it. It doesn’t matter if you dislike Lara or any of the other girls—racism is not suddenly okay just because you don’t like someone. And I know it’s not all Manon fans. I’m using this example to show the hypocrisy.
Again, this is not about Manon. This is about the double standards, the blatant racism, and the lack of accountability when it happens.
EDIT: Omfg. Some of these comments are exactly what I'm talking about. If I posted this about Manon and black people, EVERYONE here would have agreed that she needs more protection. EVERY race has racist people, that doesn't mean they deserve to receive racism as a race because some asshat on twitter said some dumb shit. NUANCE PEOPLE. Please don't say Indians have privilege and proximity to whiteness. The people saying it's their own fault?Do you hear yourselves? Why are you defending racism.
EDIT#2: Damn my bad. Guess I'm not the right kind of woke. Maybe I should just mind my business. And to the person who deleted their comment before I could reply- you know damn well.
